I thought we were already on the 2nd gen Nexus 7, but i'm not to concerned about that as I only use my Nexus for internet stuff (porn), so performance is not that important I guess.

I the only thing I really want right now is the dual screen mode that the Samsung Galaxy Note II has, but on my Nexus 7.

1. We got a bump of the memory that the base went from 8gb to 16gb.
2. I'd bet there's an over 75% chance we will see a better dual screen mode at Google I/O in May. I don't know if the software will be ready then, but I'd bet that by the end of July you'll have dual screen for many apps on your existing N7.

So it's a Nexus 7 stretched to 10" and stuck on an old OS?

My friend is an eloquent speaker.

Word of a new Nexus 7 launching soon would be good. My wife left the Nexus 7 on the roof of the van and it slid off, hit another car, and got ran over. She retrieved it, but I guess that was out of interest of not being a litterbug rather than trying to save it.

I need a new backseat toddler tab. My 3 year old is not touching our ipads.

I didn't think it looked bad until I got my Nexus 10. The Nexus 10 has the opposite problem where just about everything that's not text looks terrible because nothing on Android is designed for a screen like that.

I don't doubt there's much better, I'm just saying it's good enough for my purposes.

But I'm also someone who's never had trouble reading from screens. Hell, I've read entire books for English lit classes on hacked GBA SPs and PSPs.

Don't listen to Dr. rear end in a top hat (this should be the thread title) - it's a pretty drat good deal for $199. It's not going to blow you away but it should work fine if you're not able to pony up another ~150 for a higher spec device.

It has the same SoC, RAM and resolution as the Nexus 7, but it's bigger and won't get updates like the Nexus will. It's also $200 for a refurbished unit. You can get a new Nexus 7 for that. I wouldn't say it's that great of a deal.

EDIT: I was wrong that you couldn't get a N7 without paying $12 shipping to google.

I decided against the Acer unit once I found out it had no hdmi out. I would be very happy with a stretched out N7 if it only had hdmi out.

The Nexus 7 is a 7" tablet. He linked a 10" tablet and asked if it was a good deal (it is). 7" tablets have less than half of the display area of 10.1" tablets, it's precisely why they cost a lot less. I don't even understand how this apples and oranges bullshit could possibly help him with his decision.

To offer an alternate opinion, I've owned both versions of that tablet, the Tegra 2 and Tegra 3 version. Both were terrible pieces of poo poo. They were bulky, heavy, terrible viewing angles, unresponsive touchscreens, slow, very little available in the way of decent custom ROMs.

The Amazon review you linked to was for the Tegra 2 version, which existed during a time when there was very little in the way of decent Android tablets (it was basically the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Transformer, or A500). The reviews posted on the Walmart site were comparing it to a Tegra 2 Thrive and sub-$100 Chinese knockoffs that Walmart sells.

After buying an Acer netbook and 2 Acer tablets, all I gotta say is don't buy Acer.

Actually thats a different tablet A500, if that was the tablet for $199 I'd be all over it. The Walmart tablet is a A210 I believe which has a much worse screen, and no HDMI out. Normally I guess this tablet is only $250 so at $199 refurb it's not as good of a deal as I thought.

Yeah if the Walmart version is the A210 I'd probably steer clear, and the deal's not that great. I thought it was the A500. I've not used either of them but there is a very active ROM/development community for the 500 so any stock OS issues could easily be fixed.

You'd think so, but not really. Most of it is just "how many features can we port from the Transformer" which just ends up slowing everything down more.

I was just going to say the same thing. I loved reading on my 7 until I got my 10, now the 7 looks blurry.

As far as the whole "tax" debate. Google charges tax for many states. So, I got to pay tax and shipping on my Nexus 7 and still got it after people who bought it at staples.

Needless to say, I bought my Nexus 10 at Staples.

I am feeling like a bit of an idiot right now, hopefully someone can help. I just bought my first tablet today, a Nexus 7, and while playing around with to get the feel of it I somehow managed to make one of the standard buttons completely disappear. Looking at the manual it was the popular apps folder, and I haven't been able to find it again to put it back. Since I know so little about the thing I have no idea if this is a minor annoyance or a big blunder. Is there any way to get the frickin' thing back where it belongs?

It popped up soon after I posted this and suggested a swipe-to-type feature that's working now. Before, if I wasn't careful, whatever I said was completely incoherent. My N7 3G has been getting horrible battery life since the 4.2.2 update. I checked my battery stats and it's being caused by baseband_xmm_power keeping the tablet awake, even when it should be asleep. I have mobile data disabled and airplane mode turned on, but it's still draining my battery and making the tablet annoyingly unreliable.

Anyone found any fixes for this?

Something triggers it. I havent figured it out yet but a similar thing happens on my sgs3. Oddly enough, Certain functions do it, and some apps (no idea which yet). If I use bluetooth, on my xtrememac thing, it bugs out bluetooth or something and even after turning it off that baseband_FDJSKLF poo poo is there. If I reboot, It goes away until something else triggers it. Googling made me just give up and reboot the thing when I notice it shows up. Pandora maybe? Google Music. Would explain the bluetooth + Data thing. But then again, If I do bluetooth to my jambox + Pandora, It dont happen. Nor google music with the jambox. So confused.

Almost convinced its pandora for me, Just not every time. Tho seriously certain combos of functions do it. Anything related to bluetooth and my xtreme mac thing makes it do it.

Well, the N5100 formal announcement came out today as the Galaxy Note 8, a 3G phone/tablet that seems to continue the Tab line. It goes on sale second quarter, 2013.

I've been using the original Galaxy Tab as a daily phone + tablet, the only real problem I see is that this is slightly larger, and may not fit in my inner jacket pocket. I was going to get a 7.7 3G, but I ended up waiting too long seeing if it would drop to the same clearance prices as the WIFI and missed out. I passed on the 2.0 due to it's lack of an actual upgrade, processor wise.

Probably in anticipation of the new batch of tablets coming out, the TF700 (Asus Transformer Infinity) has dropped to $399 many places, including Best Buy, for the 32gb (down from $499). The keyboard dock is down to $99 from $149.

Basically, for the price it launched at 7 or so months ago you get a dock too, if you want to look at it that way. I know the Tegra 4 is coming soon which will probably make the Tegra 3 in this thing look anemic but that's still a pretty good deal for what is probably the best 10 inch Android tablet after the Nexus 10. I prefer it in a lot of ways - it's not quite as fast, and isn't quite as up to date (currently on 4.1, although 4.2.2 is coming out soon for it), but it has an SD slot, a 1920x1200 IPS screen that is pretty great (color wise I think it's better than the N10), and a kick-rear end dock with a battery that will charge the tablet in addition to a full SD slot and USB port.

The latter is why I picked it up the other day - it's a great airplane/train companion. I travel a shitload (I'm writing this from Hong Kong after a 20 hour trip from the US) and the dock+tablet battery lasted close to 14 hours watching videos and playing games. That's even with powering a little USB hard drive I had hooked up with all my media. I use the latest XBMC Libstagefright build (hw acceleration for the Tegra 3) + the Re-Touched skin - awesome. Movies look great on this thing.

Also, while I've read reviews here and other places that suggest it's laggy I quite like it - then again the only other 10 inch Android tablet I've used is the POS Motorola Xoom so I probably have lower expectations. Seems pretty zippy to me.

I was going to get an N10 but the lack of removable media support plus no dock/extra battery option was a no go. For the same price (comparing 32gb) I could get the Infinity and it's dock. Anyway, check your local Best Buy/retailer - Amazon still sells it on sale for $429 but I imagine that will change soon.

The TF700, with the dock that also works as a battery, is basically my ideal tablet. I'm just waiting for an updated version with a Tegra 4 and an even higher resolution screen.

Costco is carrying the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 for $430 right now. My girlfriend and I have been looking for a tablet to buy and share and we are thinking this might be the one. Neither of us care about gaming on a tablet, we have plenty if other alternatives for that. We both use Google Reader and Gmail a ton, could we have two profiles setup to use those services? Other than those two uses and browsing the Internet, I don't see us using it for much else; although we've never had a tablet so who knows what other uses we will find for it. We just want a light weight weight thing with which we can sit on the couch and browse the web without being tethered to our desktops. Does anyone have experience with the Note 10.1?

Yup, this is a better option for you. Multiuser support got added to Android in 4.2, which the Note 10.1 doesn't have yet (right?). It also has a better screen, hardware, and is cheaper. The Nexus 10 will also keep getting updates, new features, and bug fixes much more quickly than the Note. Unless you need a special feature that only the Note has, you'll be better off with the Nexus 10.
