Shoot, I had a dream of a rotation with three Kevin Browns! Anyway, the Jobbers still have '08 Carlos Beltran or '93 Gary Sheffield for either an upcoming pick or a catcher. Like I said last night, Sheff'll be a little pricier than Beltran.

In an unprecedented move, the Oxford and Cambridge Mathematics Departments have come together in order to use their best-in-the world maths abilities to create the best Super-League team ever! Owner: Revenant Threshold Location: Milton Keynes, UK Home Grounds: The Quadrangle Teams Used 1911 Brooklyn Robins 1940 Pittsburgh Pirates 1993 Atlanta Braves 2001 Chicago White Sox Past Records Expansion Cup VI They definitely competed! Super-League VII 87-75, 2nd Place, Norris-Smythe Division Super-League VIII 83-79, 3rd Place, Norris-Smythe Division, Gauntletted Gauntlet VII Round 8: 19-21, 3rd Place, Relegated Championship History 3x Television Champions Intro to Super-League Studies SL 110 Prof. Dynamo February 21st, 2013 Math and Glory: The Rise and Fall of the Oxbridge Mathematicians Throughout history, many people have wondered why some teams have succeeded and others failed in the Super-League. The focus of this paper will be to examine why the Oxbridge Mathematicians, despite posting winning records in both of their seasons at the Super-League, were ultimately relegated due to their own deficiencies as a team. The three most important of these deficiencies were: 1. Their lack of quality hitters, 2. Mismanagement of their pitching rotation, and 3. The Curse of Richard II. Ultimately, while the bad pitching and hitting certainly hurt the Mathematicians, it was the curse that killed the Mathematicians' chances of survival. The hitting of the Mathematicians was in a constant state of flux, but was never very good. From the start, it was clear that the Mathematicians' hitters were less than ideal. Consider that the Mathematicians used two Jack Clarks on their roster in both seasons they played in the Super-League.1 Jack Clark, for all of his skills, was still merely an above average bat rather than a truly transcendent player, and as he played at a relatively easy position, the fact that Revenant Threshold could do no better than multiple Clarks did limit the upside of his offense. As The Merry Marauder put it, "To me, Jack Clark is little better than a #1 poker chip to be used as a bonus to lure better players out of the undiscriminating owner.2 However, this use, or misuse, of Jack Clarks was only symptomatic of larger problems with the Mathematicians offense. It is a fact that, during the Mathematicians' final Gauntlet run, Revenant Threshold chose to use Al Oliver, about whom a long-term league owner once said, "I would rather be eaten by a dozen sharks than use Al Oliver in my teams lineup," at first base.3 While there may be some circumstance where such a maneuver might make sense, in this case, there was no good reason to put such a weak bat at a position so geared to sluggers. Either Mike Sweeney or, more intriguingly, Joey Votto, would have provided more offense than Al Oliver, yet both remained in the minors, far away from any position where they could have helped the Mathematicians survive. Even worse, Miguel Cabrera, who, in a perfect world, would have anchored the lineup, proved a disappointment. In the final round of the Gauntlet, after which the Mathematicians were relegated, Miguel Cabrera could manage no better than an OBP of .195.4 Granted, this was an exceptionally poor round and was likely the result of a small sample size more than anything else, but Cabrera's performance in the regular season had not been much better.5 Ultimately, most league experts agreed that it was Cabrera's young age, as he was only 21 in that year, and that this too was an error made by Revenant Threshold.6 In sum, it is clear that there were a number of mistakes made by the Mathematicians that harmed their offense. More damaging, though still not the likely root cause of the Mathematicians' ultimate failure, was Revenant Threshold's mismanagement of his pitching rotation. In the final version of his rotation, used in the Gauntlet where his team was defeated and thus relegated, the eleven pitchers on his active roster had combined for two Cy Young Awards, both belonging to Tim Lincecum, who remained in mop-up duty for the entirety of the round.7. There are many theories as to why Revenant Threshold hated Tim Lincecum to the extent that he decided to destroy his team rather than use Tim Lincecum. The most outlandish theory, proposed by mentholmoose, was that Revenant Threshold was, and always had been, Tim Lincecum, and, gripped by self-loathing after two straight disappointing seasons in real life, had intentionally marginalized himself.8 The other leading theory is that Revenant Threshold, being from the far off land of England, where people drove on the left, called soccer 'football', and where the entire country is ruled by an evil A.I. known only as "KAM-RON", did not understand exactly what he was doing to his team, and therefore the mistake was simply one of ignorance. This was the view taken by Revenant Threshold's countryman, gingemidget, at least.9 Whichever theory was correct, and it seems clear that it was one of those two, the net effect was that the Mathematicians did not have quite enough pitching in their rotation to carry their hitting. However, the real cause of the Mathematicians' collapse was clearly because of an ancient curse laid by the last Plantagenet king of England, Richard II. His final words, immortalized in the play of the same name by Shakespeare, make clear that this doom was inevitable and unavoidable: "That hand shall burn in never-quenching fire That staggers thus my person. Exton, thy fierce hand Hath with the king's blood stain'd the king's own land. Mount, mount, my soul! thy seat is up on high; Whilst my gross flesh sinks downward, here to die." As everyone knows, Revenant Threshold was a direct descendant of Exton, and, thanks to a warlock's spell, Revenant Threshold was bonded to soul of his ancestor, thus sharing his divine punishment for killing the rightful king of England to whom he had previously sworn and oath of fealty.10 The effects of this treachery, having echoed through the ages in the physical world, most notably changing the dynastic history of England, came crashing down on upon him, destroying his team utterly, in a story that would have made for a good Shakespearean tragedy were the Bard alive, or if KAM-RON's project to clone Shakespeare not ended in a bloodbath outside of Leeds.11 Still, no matter what happened, the net effect was that they simply where not good enough to survive, and therefore died, causing them to be relegating and not being in the Super-League anymore because they had been relegated because they were not quite good enough. That was unfortunate, as by being relegated, they were no longer in the Super-League. On the positive side, at least they could not be relegated after Super-League IX. And that was bad. In conclusion, it may never be known why the Mathematicians failed but, whatever the reason, it will remain mysterious going forward. 1Dynamo, S. (2012). Smasher League Report: Week 17.
