I'd try taking off the plastic case before loving around with any fan settings.

Secondly, you effectively cannot take out the battery because the CPU will forcibly downclock if you do.

As previously mentioned, don't remove the battery.

The machine at load can't draw enough power from the Magsafe and will throttle the CPU to counteract what you're trying to do.

Well I had a desktop but I had to get rid of it due to space constraints when we moved. The computer handles Diablo 3 just fine, I'm just trying to find a way to counteract additional heat generated when I stream. I recently acquired a taste for live streaming while I play and while the system hasn't responded negatively to what I've been doing to it, I don't feel super good about the cores getting up to 95*C while I'm doing it. Just wondering if there was a way to help the system out.

Don't worry about it. The hardware will spin the fans up to whatever it needs, and if it gets too hot, it will clock down.

To be fair to the OP, if it gets too hot too fast it will *shut down* rather than clock down. I can see preferring to force it to keep cool rather than put up with that.

The only way that's going to happen is if you have the vents blocked or full of dust and cat hair that it can't ventilate.

Here's a 2011 throttling the hell out of itself. Not sure if the rMBP is that much better at shedding heat or if Ivy Bridge saves it.

I agree in theory it shouldn't happen at all; it's just that Macs are notorious for preferring low noise rather than low temps so the ideal situation doesn't always happen.

Plus the OP has one of those terrible hard covers.

I actually thought that (r)MBPs have an adequate cooling system (and by adequate I mean it can effectively dissipate heat under 100% load for unlimited period of time). Well, this certainly explains sluggishness I thought I made up after playing Diablo III for like hour.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Haswell is supposed to have even lower TDP? So updated rMBP in fall 2013 (provided that it gets Haswell at that time) should have even smaller chance of thermo-throttling?

Ugh. Well that pretty much destroys the cooling no matter how many fans you point at it.

It's doing a pretty good job in that graph - does 99 fps vs 103fps qualify as 'sluggish'?

Well in regards to that particular graph — no, not really, the difference is minimal. On my system though it would drop from ~35 fps to ~20 fps (or balance somewhere around 20-25 fps) so small lag and stutter would actually be noticeable.

I'm about to take the plunge on a new 27-inch 3.2GHz iMac for work (mostly Photoshop stuff, occasional video / 2D animation). I know I want a fusion drive, a new HD for Time Machine and AppleCare. I also plan to upgrade the RAM in the future. Looking at my budget, I could probably spring for 1 more upgrade, but I'm not sure if the money would be better spent elsewhere. The price is already eye-watering, but I only upgrade my machine every 4 years or so and I use it every single day.

So which (if any) of the following is most worth my while?: bump the processor up to the 3.4GHz i7 for £160 / bump the graphics up to the GTX 680MX 2GB for £120 / something else / keep the money and get a decent chair for my office.

I try to keep myself informed as best I can but I'm not super technically minded so for all I know bumping the processor'll cause overheating issues or will be barely noticeable or something. For what it's worth, my current 20-inch, Early 2008 iMac (which I bumped up to 4GB RAM) is still handling my day-to-day work pretty well, bar the occasional eternal beachball. I may increase the amount of video / animation / motion graphics work I do but we're probably talking more this kinda thing than, y'know, Transformers. I also can hold out another month or two if there's a good reason for that too but I do have a couple of fairly imminent projects that would be nice to tackle on a new computer.

I'd choose the 2GB graphics upgrade as the fluff perk. If it ends up that technology similar to Element 3D makes its way into Photoshop/illustrator (you can already import 3D models into PS for compositing, etc) in the next year or two, you might hit your GPU RAM limit or at least be able to make good use of graphics RAM. It's also essentially non-upgradeable after purchase.

Just jumping on the graphic card bandwagon. I went with the 680mx and I've been blown away by the performance. Granted I'm coming from a late 2009, but it's still pretty impressive to me.

I guess I'll just kill the Hard Shell case and find a couple of rubber strips to sit the laptop on since it would be aluminum on aluminum if I set it directly on my cooling pad and it would slide all over the place / get scratched to hell.

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try tonight and see if the thermals are any better. Any suggestions for fan placement on the cooling pad?

I've got a longhaul flight coming up, and it's never occurred to me that I've pretty much only ever used my MacBook Air (2011) on power and with wifi. If I just use it for video playback to keep me entertained with no internet/bluetooth or anything like that, how long can I expect out of it... about 5-6 hours?

Engadget got 5-1/2 hours out of their video playback test but I'm not sure if that's streaming or a local file or what.

Assuming it's a 13" Air and you turn brightness down to half you can easily get 5-6 hours. If it's been plugged in 24/7 since you bought it the battery may have deteriorated a bit.

Is there any special reason the OSX partition on my 2009 17" MBP would spontaneously stop working on my home network? It connects to other wireless networks fine and I can browse as normally as a bandwidth leech can, it *connects* to the home network its worked with for a year, but the home network just doesn't connect to anything. A whole lotta "page is not responding" and such.

I noticed the problem around the time I got my iPhone (first ever smartphone so I have nothing to compare it to) but I spend a lot of time in a Windows partition so I doubt there's a causal relationship there. And on the Windows partition, the network works like a charm. I'm posting with it right now!

Okay, so I'm still having trouble with temp regulation. I'm starting to think that FanControl, Temperature Monitor Lite, and smcFanControl temp readings are bullshit.

I downloaded iStat for some monitoring when I started playing D3 while streaming at 24 frames per second at 720p. smcFanControl clocked my CPU at 105*C but the system wasn't shutting down or lagging out and the fans actually started to spin up a bit on their own (~5000-5200rpm from the normal 2000-3000). iStat clocked my CPU at 56-64*C max.

Which is the more reputable monitor. I'm thinking that it is probably iStat as the fans would have kicked in way sooner than 100-105*C to regulate the heat.

Any opinions?

I just ordered my 27 iMac from Macmall and those sons of bitches got me good. I wanted to get the 3.2ghz with upgraded 680mx 2gb card and 3tb fusion. However, when I called to order, they had one in stock but it was the 3.4ghz for $200 more than what I wanted to spend. When the guy on the phone said it'd ship out today, I said gently caress it and pulled the trigger.

Also, it came with a Magic Mouse instead of Magic Trackpad I wanted. Do you think the Apple store would switch it out if I don't take it out of the box? Worse comes to worse I guess I'll just buy a trackpad.
