every frame can have a local palette which takes precedence over the global palette defined at the beginning of the file. local palettes can be up to 256 entries, so you can have a separate 256 colour palette for every frame. its in the spec for both gif87 and gif89

i love h.264 becuase quality is high, for a 4:2:0 medium I hate it because everybody is in codec hell and h.264 doesn't play back right. quicktime? decoder from 2006 in windows, anything over baseline profile probablly won't run at the correct framerate, and TV -->RGB levels doesn't occur. VLC? playback is mostly fine, but same thing with the TV -->RGB levels by default, also lol vsync in my video player? whats that? most people have a codec pack installed becuase "lol we always installed a codec pack!" and now they are in codec hell and its decoding single threaded off the CPU, and anything over 15mbps chokes, becuase LOL WE ALL HAVE LAPTOPS RUNNING AT 1.8GHZ OR SOMETHING YAYYYYY 2013, year of the worst h.264 decoder situation

Install Gentoo posted:what does my xbox 360 use for h.264. because thats how i watch most h.264 content mostly I'm not sure how the internal decoder for XBOX360 works, but there are some things that go on with the HANA chip (the part that takes the internal RGB framebuffer and convert it to the appropriate format to go out the back of the console) But Microsoft understands that stuff and black levels are correct unless you're dumb and have set something manually yourself. .mp4 file will have the video encoded in the 16-235 range, or TV levels. .mp4 files can have the color primaries defined as REC.709 or REC.601. 95% of files will be rec.709, and most decoders ASSUME rec.709 because "lol how do we write a matrix to convert this poo poo???" The decoder in windows 7 handles this translation properly, I would assume the one in the XBOX does too. Xbox360 will render the frame at 0-255 or RGB range internally into the framebuffer HANA chip will output it based off console settings, and type of cable used. HDMI is the most reliable since there will be some sort of EDID handshake that will occur with the device. This is very accurate unless you bought some $200 Chinese TV. A big portion of TVs will say "I like rec.709, TV levels" and the device will output accordingly. The TV still has to convert that signal to light wavelengths, and that's usually pretty hosed because the TV default settings will usually be for in-store material, so hope you like crushed blacks/whites + 1 gazillion to one dynamic contrast where the backlight is dimming up and down faster than a 5 year old can break an incandescent lightbulb dimmer switch.

the win 7 and xbox 360 decoders are the same or atleast the same codebase. they will both get the exact same problems with certain malformed files/streams.
