Hello,
My folks are going to LV in March and are having a hard time finding a good place to stay. Like the OP states, hotels fall in and out of favour, and that's what my parents are finding as trip advisor and some other sites say that a lot of hotels are under construction right now, or that the ones they used to stay at are getting bad reviews. I'm wondering if you fine goons can help me know some currently favourable places for them to stay. They'd ideally like to be on the strip, and pay as little as possible, and have a clean room. That's really it. They like to wander and don't mind leaving the place they're staying to go play slots and look for pawn stores somewhere else. I told my dad about Bill's Gambling Hall, so he's looking into it. Thanks!

Bill's is undergoing a major construction project and is closed for the year.

The default 'Cheap but good location' hotel is the Quad (formerly the Imperial Palace). As a local, I hate driving there because the parking garage is basically guaranteed death, but it's got basically everything you're looking for. The Tropicana, which is way off at the south end of the strip just dumped a bunch of money into renovations, too, though I think they still have the cheap-o rooms (garden rooms, if I remember right - 3 story motel style rooms that are pretty awful). Planet Hollywood is a good spot too, though I'm not sure what their going rate is these days.

I'm sure there are other options too, but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I don't know man, I went to LasVegas.com to book my vacation. I got a package for 3 nights that basically cost 200 dollars more than the price of my flight tickets for two and this was at the Signature at MGM Grand so I'm not entirely sure that cheap is always the way to to go because I feel like I got quality at a good price.

That being said, The Stratosphere is waaay on the North side of the strip but usually has pretty cheap rates.

PHo is expensive. Second only to Caesar's Palace among CET hotels I think.

Quad is definitely cheap and has a good center strip location but the rooms are really really iffy. I would look at Ballys and Harrahs -- a little more expensive than Quad but still good locations and clean (if boring) rooms. That's more than you can say about the Quad rooms. Flamingo is another good option, but a little more expensive than the other three. It's really too bad you missed Bills, it was pretty much the best value on the strip if you ask me.

By the way, I didn't see it mentioned in this thread, but all Caesar's Entertainment hotels (Flamingo, Ballys, Quad, Harrahs, Rio, etc) will begin charging a resort fee as of March 1 (tomorrow). I think its $10/night for quad, $18/night for the midrange places, and $20-25 for the nicer places. Definitely makes MGM properties look more attractive by comparison.

With that said, accounting for the resort fee, you should also look at Luxor (not a pyramid room), Excalibur, NYNY, and Monte Carlo. Don't be fooled by the low prices at Circus Circus or Stratosphere. They barely count as being on the strip, you might as well save money staying downtown at that point.

^ dat.

Monte Carlo had cheap cheap rooms when I looked on Kayak and bundled it with airfare. Actually, Trump (no casino) and MGM/Signature did too. Trump looked positively ritzy.

Stayed at Harrah's and yeah, they also had a really inexpensive bundle price, and the location is really awesome.

E: \/ I'll be there then. If you've got cool parents we should hang.

I stayed at Luxor. The reviews for it aren't the best but we had no complaints. Everything was clean and the staff was friendly. How much time do you really spend in your room anyway? The Mexican restaurant inside Luxor was pretty good. I can't really comment on the gaming options, all I did at any casino was put a few dollars into a slot machine.

here are some mid strip recommendations smack dab in the center that are on the lower/inexpensive end. I found a ultra loving cheap promo code for the quad (20 bucks a night), so if they really want to be as cheap as possible that's your go-to. Here are rates + the promo code you need to use for a few hotels.

HOTEL - CODE - TOTAL PRICE FOR 4 NIGHTS
quad - IIFNF - $104
Harrashs - ILFN - $229
flamingo - IFNF8 - $256
Ballys - IBFFP - $332

I pulled the rates from smartervegas.com, if you find better rates let me know because I'll start using the site you find. :)

Leaving for Vegas in the morning. Boston to Vegas, no stop. First time being on the West Coast period and I'm very excited. I'm staying at The Excalibur. Anything special in the town going on this week? (March 1st to 9th) As lame as it sounds, I'm pumped to check out Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay. Also definitely going to visit the Pinball Museum. Wanted to check out the Titanic exhibit if anybody knows it's cool or not?

No idea about the Titanic exhibit, but I moved from Somerville to Vegas about 6.5 years ago. This place is like a whole different loving world than Boston.

The Shark Reef was pretty cool. I thought Titanic was interesting but my boyfriend was kind of bored. It's a lot of things they've salvaged from the wreck, like dishes from first class, tools from the workers, as well as a recreated staircase and a part of the ships deck.

If you like the Shark Reef, there's also the dolphins at the Mirage to check out.

Unless the hotel has some sort of infestation or outbreak even staying in a kind of crappy hotel shouldn't ruin your vegas trip. The only time I am ever in my room there is to sleep/shower/change. If you wanna go someplace with a nice hotel to relax in, you could do a lot better for the money than Vegas.

I dunno about you, but if I bang a girl, I want it to not be in a shithole hotel room on a twin bed. I also enjoy rooms where I can't hear my neighbor banging his wife/girlfriend/one night stand/whore if possible.

Not to mention the hotel itself. I dunno about you, but I like a hotel that has a decent selection of restaurants, perhaps a bar that isn't infested with toothless patrons (this is not age specific, plenty of meth heads at Bill's and Imperial Palace). Somewhere I might actually enjoy spending part of my day. Or a hotel accompanied by a decent poker room.

Well, everything beyond the first sentence of my statement stands. Because, you know, our parents don't have sex.

I put my parents at the Vdara when they come to town. Wynn/Encore is a more Vegas option followed by Venetian/Palazzo, and then Bellagio and lastly Four Seasons.

Going next week and staying over St Patrick's day. Is there anything somewhat interesting aside from NYNY or the general downtown area that you guys would recommend?

We may go see Flogging Molly at the Cosmopolitan, last time I went to a concert there was at the Book and Stage to see Electric Six, which was interesting because as far as I could tell there were maybe like two-three dozen fans there to see them mixed in with the Cosmopolitan on a Saturday night crowd.

My wife and I are headed to Vegas in July for a conference and I was looking for some advice on shows. Last time we were in Vegas we saw Love and Penn & Teller. Both of which were pretty awesome. We aren't much into the club scene so we were thinking about seeing some shows again. I'm trying to book what tickets I can now so they are taken care of ahead of time.

Absinthe is at the top of our list for sure, but we were trying to find something for a couple of the other nights we have available. We liked Love so much last time that we definitely want to see another Cirque du Soleil show. We thought maybe O since it seems to be pretty highly regarded, but I've heard that even though Mystere has been around a long time it is still a really good one to see.

My wife mentioned maybe seeing one of the showgirls type shows would be fun, but from the reviews Jubilee seems to be knocked pretty hard, but Vegas! The Show might be a good alternative.

I've also seen Le Reve tossed around quite a bit.

We will be staying at the Palazzo so anything close to that so we don't have to travel too far in the July Vegas heat would be better. We do plan on going down to Freemont St one night since we didn't make it there last time and want to check out old Vegas at least once.

Got my tickets booked for tomorrow night to Absinthe. Stoked to be back in town!

e: That said, anything good up this weekend? The weather looks like it's going to suck balls. Seriously, rain and 20 degrees colder than average for exactly the length of time that I'll be there? gently caress you, weather.

e2.0: Welp, Absinthe was great. If you're easily offended, don't go. If you're somewhat easily offended, don't sit in the front row. Also, let this be advice for any Vegas newbs: Do NOT under any circumstances think it's okay to party 'til 545 AM and then go do poo poo at 9 AM without real breakfast two days in a row. Either one morning, then a rest with proper breakfast, then the following, but otherwise 9 AM at the Gun Store then 9 AM to Hoover Dam sucks. Trust me. Unless you have cocaine. Then maybe.

Also, reviews:
Firefly Best bacon wrapped dates I've had. The patatas bravas were okay, too. Guys with me really liked the scallops. Some of the other stuff was meh, or too covered in sauce. You're seriously going to douse a charcutiere plate in some olive oil basil garlic sauce poo poo? Really? Lame. The red sangria will kick you in the face after 2 of them, btw.

Lola's Location is bleh, but the food is awesome. The grits were unreal, and the soft shell crab po boy was deelish. Their jambalaya wasn't bad either. Didn't know it was a Guy Fieri spot though. But ignoring his dumb rear end on the wall, the food is worth a cab ride.

Public House Get the house burger. That fire roasted tomato makes that burger so effing good. Beer selection is pretty good too. Wish that would spread to more of Vegas as a regular thing.

Casino Royale Never change. Well, maybe get some better HVAC and cool the loving place down a bit. Sweating at the craps table is no fun. But otherwise, you're great.

Hoover Dam via Hoover Dam Tour Company Didn't need anything more, the basic package was just fine except the stupid visit to the Ethel M Chocolate Factory. Sucks, and next time I might honestly rent a car and go at our leisure, especially given the 9:15 AM start time. Woof. Guide was informative enough for my dumbass hungover self, and just the right amount of vitriolic towards tourists/his passengers.

Last minute saturday rates, in the middle of spring break, for $100? Difficult. I see the Quad for $118 and maybe a promotion can kick that down to nearly $100 (but then you add in tax and resort fee).

You might also look at the Hotel Tonight app, they claim to offer surplus last-minute rooms for cheap. I bet you could find something reasonable that's not directly on strip like Hard Rock, LVH, etc.
