Chris Thursten over at PC Gamer seems to echo a commonly held view:

"so far the game has mostly succeeded in making me feel uncomfortable: not in the sense that I’m sharing Lara’s pain, but that I’m the rear end in a top hat pushing forwards on the analogue stick and watching her suffer."

I'm 32% completed and I have not found one single hot-chick-snuff-sim moment/occasion/hint whatsoever. Everything seems relatively believable (it's a video game) or digestible to me and overall I'm having a blast with it. I can't fathom why so many are expressing discomfort with Lara's death and discomfort. I can't see why it's even a topic of discussion. I'm not getting my jollies when she gets injured or dies (only died once by plummeting into a tree-covered abyss...I saw no carnage anyway), but I'm sure as poo poo bouncing in my chair gleefully as she survives narrowly and endures like a champ.

This is a good game. And it's Tomb Raider. I haven't felt like this since 2.

This is a good game. And it's Tomb Raider. I haven't felt like this since 2.

I think it bothers me insomuch as it feels like the developers were having fun figuring out how to hurt her next, as opposed to how her injuries show triumph over adversity. A lot of the time she seems to get her poo poo wrecked just to get her poo poo wrecked, not even to set up a plot point or gimmick area or something. A lot of the time it doesn't even seem to have meaningful repercussions, just Lara getting the crap kicked out of her and then she's fine by the next area so it can happen again.

In a way it starts to feel meaningless because everything Lara does ends up with her getting brutalized. Instead of giving it a real sense of "holy poo poo, look how tough she is," it becomes "What the hell, this is getting ridiculous." It's violence without consequence heaped upon itself. It isn't anything that ruins the game for me but it does get pretty excessive.

I guess I was liking the wrong things in Tomb Raider because so far this game is completely disappointing to me. Not only is the whole "Lara is weak, Lara almost dies, Lara keeps getting hurt" plot not doing anything for me, the QTEs actively piss me off and with all the collectibles and "survival instinct" I'm having bad Batman/Dishonored flashbacks (as in I spend a significant amount of time in false-color mode just to find stuff).

I can see how people who wanted more Uncharted in their Tomb Raider would like it though.

I really liked the old Tomb raider games and i really wanted to like the new one..
The gameplay is just really boring and a huge dissapointment for me, so many QTE and nearly zero difficulty makes me not want to play it.
Also the plot is really retarded. I know its a video game and so on and all but there are so many retarded and stupid things that i couldnt care for less for any of the characters.

Scruffy's gonna die the way he lived...
I'm really liking this game so far, but the tone is pretty weird.

You don't hunt to actually survive, you hunt for XP so you can get better at hunting and killing people. Lara is a monster who devours everything in her path "LARA HUNGRY OM NOM NOM".

Some of the QTE deaths are brutal enough to make me uncomfortable, which is probably a sign that they are doing something right. They can have at least a little emotional impact on me, which is more than most games can do. But I get an uneasy feeling that pretty soon we will be seeing Youtube montages of all her "best" death animations put together as someone else's wank fuel.

The scenes where she interacts with bad guys play pretty well so far (I'm not very far into the game though), in that they at least feel somewhat realistic. She doesn't seem horribly victimized to me, because she never hesitates to fight back. I feel like they were afraid to play up the sexual angle of things though... as brutal as the bad guys can be, it seems completely unrealistic that these men would not immediately look at her (and the other girls) as more than just another prisoner to deal with. They are right to not make things like this completely overt and overshadow the rest of the story, but the complete absence of it is pretty conspicuous. I suppose a larger publisher has more to worry about when it comes to controversy, and they didn't want to give any ammunition to the anti-videogames crowd. But when it comes to just the purely physical suffering she is put through, they seem to have been overly gratuitous (she can't just fall and hurt herself, she has to fall on a jagged metal spike!).

Tech blather: On Ultra settings the benchmark averages about 31 FPS. If I turn off TressFX I get about 33. Most people seem to have a much bigger performance gap with the hair effects, why don't I? Could this indicate that I'm CPU bound?

This is a videogame, not a documentary, and Tomb Raider isn't a narrative about overcoming sexual abuse. It would be incredibly gross and gratuitous to throw in an explict scene where Lara is raped/someone else is raped just because that's what 'would really happen'. The whole idea of that being the point where your immersion is broken is completely bizzare.

I don't remember anyone complaining that there immersion was broken when we didn't get a rape scene featuring Nathan Drake when he was interred in that prison in Uncharted 2.

Not to mention, the game does have a scene where that threat is implict and isn't completely overt.

I like how it's never quite explained or elaborated on what she's doing with those gun parts, presumably she's just piecing that poo poo together, but the game makes it seem like an upgrade; collect three mystical AK-47 pieces and ascend your Japanese WW2 submachine gun +1 to an AK.

I've just gotten to the part where Lara gets the gun and I've been favorably impressed by the game so far, although some of the death sequences are a bit much, they fit the atmosphere of the game. I do feel something of a disconnect with what the game is telling me Lara's feelings are after she killed a guy and what I'm feeling, but that's probably inevitable.

On a related note, while I do agree with people that it's kind of a cop-out to have Lara endure some pretty heavy injuries and not have it impact the gameplay, the stab through the side that opens the game actually continues to pain her all the way up to the end. It's even usually the injury that does affect gameplay; after big sequences you'll see her clutching her side there and there's the scene in the Shantytown, limited in scope as it may be.

So far the only way the game can kill me is with QTEs and it's getting really old and to me it undermines the whole point about "protecting" Lara and her getting through tough poo poo to emerge stronger.

The combination of a) QTEs being freaking everywhere and them being b) timed while c) hiding the buttons for a while and d) using abstract icons instead of the key to be used, it's making me so mad at video games.

I'm on the fence between getting this game for PC or PS3. I am one of those people that enjoy getting trophies on my PS account so as of right now I am leaning toward that. The one thing that I wonder about the PC game, how do you all see the modding community for this game going forward? I got Skyrim on PC for that reason and if some crazy Tomb Raider mods come out and I have it PS3 it will be disappointing. Also, anyone with a single GTX570 play this yet? How does it handle it?

Last thing, if I do decide on the PC version, have I missed out on all the deals?

I can't really comment on the PC version, but if you're hoping to get the platinum trophy on the PS3 version you should know that a decent chunk of the trophies are multiplayer related. (And from what I've played, the multiplayer isn't all that great)

Ha, I think I know the reason for the video embargoes and NDAs regarding reviews - the game really wastes very little time in getting back to classic Tomb Raider subject material, exceptionally overt supernatural elements and all. Almost every trailer and gameplay video is of the first two hours or so - mostly the first hour - and people are saying that it's a good 18-20 hours long.

Lara pretty much gets over the shock of taking lives about ten minutes after her first kill. Even going as far as saying how easy it was. She's a natural born killer, looter and raider of tombs.

Rest of the game (well, I'm only just 10 mins in) seems fine, and GPU Tweak isn't showing anything I wouldn't expect, it just threw me for a bit of a loop when the first thing I saw looked like my old dead NVidia's final outputs.

The latter happens because the former was seriously implied with the marketing. It was a huge deal how much Lara would go through, what would happen if you failed events, etc etc. There was a very skeevy under-current in all the advertising that was difficult to get away from. I'm glad that it isn't the case after all but it's not hard to see why people coming into the game would think such things.

I'm really happy that my hunch was right on this - Marketing Dudes are tone-deaf idiots.

Outside of maybe the first hour, Lara is almost supernaturally capable and dangerous. She's hesitant about some things, but that just means she needs to spend about two seconds convincing herself that it's a good plan. She literally crafts herself a sack full of rope-arrows while under heavy fire from multiple directions.

I really dislike achievements/trophies relating to online multiplayer and COD used to be good with this having it's own in game achievements tied to multiplayer but that's a separate little rant.

With regards to the multiplayer I think it'll be a lot more fun once everything settles down. Right now it's a bit of a laggy mess. The levels are interesting with some fun traps but going back to the achievements yeah, the ones like "Reach maximum level" sound like a chore.

It never crashes to the desktop, but I am having trouble even getting through the beginning survival part because they're checkpointing me so often I'm having these freezes every minute or less. I upgraded to the newest beta drivers, restarted, validated the files on steam but still no luck. Any ideas?

Disabling "Exclusive Full Screen" and "V Sync" fixed all my issues with my 670. Others have reported disabling tessellation helps too. Worth a try disabling them. I still get a minor 1 second freeze sometimes when the TR comes up, but I think they may be disguised loading screens in corridors rather than a result of the save.

Well, I'm enjoying this game quite a bit! I had forgotten what it feels like to be presently surprised by a game. But I pre-ordered this game on a whim, so I didn't really have expectations to begin with. The shooting works well. I like how there's no "cover" button, Lara just crouches, and when you aim, she pops out of cover without being "glued" to the object. The climbing works well. I'm playing on the PC with the graphics on their max settings, and the game looks awesome! One thing that's got me a bit annoyed are the bullet sponge enemies, however. I suppose it's just a way for them to make the bow and arrow more effective (body shot is a one-hit kill, I think).

Anyway, I'm actually recording myself playing through it the first time, and uploading the first video, now. So if anyone's interested in watching some gameplay before buying, keep an eye on my channel. I usually don't buy games day one and check out playthroughs first, so I'd like to help others by doing the same.
