So I got to play this for a couple hours today before I had to head to work. I just plundered my first tomb and I'm wondering a couple things:

A) Is there any reward for the various collectibles to find?
B) Will it be obvious when I start coming across new parts to unlock upgrades for my gear?
C) When do I get the rope arrow and fire arrow because I'm seeing all these things I'm obviously gonna need to backtrack for.

A) The documents are sort of their own rewards (extra backstory, etc). The relics you can sort of take or leave although they also add to the backstory a little. Finding all GPS caches unlocks a document you can't find otherwise (spoiler for that last document, because unless you go through your documents manually, the game doesn't actually bring up the document itself like it does the others) explaining that the GPS cache was left behind by a man part of a group called Trinity and warning whoever found the note to stop matthias from "awakening an ancient enemy". The find X/X fetch quests just unlock concept art and give extra XP, so feel free to skip them.

B)All upgrade parts for weapons I got came from regular salvage crates, and maybe one hidden tomb chest. I'm not sure if they drop randomly or if they're tied to specific crates.

C)I'd say you get the rope arrow at around a third of the way through, and fire arrows at the halfway mark. Both happen after some cutscenes, and you can't possibly miss them.

Also finding every doodad in a set awards you with like 500 experience. So if you find all of a certain set of relics, that's an instant 500 exp. It's a pretty quick way to level if you go around looking for doodads.

For those who got the Lost Adventurer DLC, is there a certain time to go and do it or can you pretty much go straight in when it's discovered? Really, I guess that question can apply to any of the side tombs. Wasn't sure if some required mandatory upgrades to complete or not.

One of my friends just said this to me, and I agree. Especially considering that you can kill and gut animals for...10XP? If they'd given it an actual purpose that would have been kinda cool.

In combat I never even notice my HP, it's so hard to die unless one of the machine gun guys gets a lucky burst off on you while you're aimed at someone else or something.

edit - Re: Tombs. The lost adventurer is the first one you find, you can do it as soon as you get there. Out of the tombs i've done so far, only one required a piece of equipment, and you get it in the same area as the tomb.

Also the lost adventurer is the best tomb and all the others i've done were really really easy. Visually there's one really neat one japanese villa with all the wind but the puzzles are just single room platform movement and it's such a shame. They could have been so much more.

edit - wait, I might be thinking about a different tomb? I dunno, the first tomb I found I was 90% sure was the DLC one.

I found it interesting that they actually had a mirror in-game, because a lot of game engines these days don't bother to support it. Then again, it is also the only mirror I've seen in the game, so maybe they just cheated a bit in that spot.

To be honest this just kind of reminds me that I dislike how inconsistent they are with injuries and general 'dirtiness.'

It feels like the developers were afraid to go "Wait, someone who goes through all this stuff is going to look like poo poo at the end of the day" because Lara is, of course, an attractive 20-something and so you get a weird impermanance with anything that might make her look more that "kind of dirty." It stands out a lot with the river of blood where she inexplicably ends up no longer covered in blood after a couple of minutes.

It wouldn't stand out except they place a weird emphasis on it when she does get injured/hurt/falls into a mud pit but don't actually stick with the consequences. The mirror scene is supposed to feel like "wow, look at how much has changed" but the biggest difference between Lara at the start and Lara at the end is that her shirt is dirtier.

I think you need all the upgrades, I at least got a prompt that I didn't have one upgrade when I entered about mid-game.

Speaking of which, is there any way to destroy the thorny weed walls you see now and then? They seem like something that might be removable with an upgrade, but I ended the game and didn't get one.

The upgrade note shows up if you get near the metal wall in the back, I actually didn't return there with the grenade launcher because you can get to the tomb's treasure chest without any tools.

You only need the grenade launcher. Beyond the barrier is just a room with lots of ammo and quite a few salvage crates. Personally, it wasn't worth the time to backtrack because I had more than enough salvage, and I honestly don't think you can ever run out of ammo (at least not on Normal difficulty).

No, I wondered about it as well, but since I'm not missing any collectibles (except maybe five of the doodads in a set) I'm pretty sure there's nothing beyond those. I did notice some animals coming out of them a few times, and I was even almost gored by boar coming out of it at one time, fwiw.

You can't run out of ammo on any difficulty. Even straight up spam shooting the pistol into dudes chests will net you back pistol ammunition at the same rate, assuming you are full on other ammo.

Yeah, it seems a little excessive to me. Not nearly as bad as I was expecting from the weird PR statements about the game, but she definitely gets beaten to hell and back. I kinda felt like stuff like the rebar in the beginning was unnecessary because I mean, gently caress, you just fell a good 15-20 feet onto hard ground! And you set yourself on FIRE so you could escape that!

Also, does anyone know if you can keep exploring after beating the story or if the game just ends? I'm racing through the story right now and I don't know if I should be taking breaks to explore and get collectibles.

And these challenges - there are some that are only available in certain sequences (burn the flags, shoot down lanterns, etc), are those replayable at some point or am I just SOL in getting them unless I decide to play the game again?

You can go back and get all of those challenges, even though the sequence is done. In fact, it's a little easier because there aren't any enemies left. Kinda boring as a result though.

Good to know, I was worried that they were in areas that are only accessible during their story sequences so if you didn't do it the first time, you're hosed. I'll probably end up doing it, just for completion's sake.

I don't remember the pub/dev saying anything weird about the game. I do remember the SF journos making Tomb Raider out to be "torture porn" though — because of that scene where Lara's first victim gropes her before trying to choke her to death.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkBZ6kKeoTI

"To actually see what she goes through, to become hardened, to become this tomb raider that we know and love, or at least a new version of it... a big part of that journey is seeing some of the hits she's taken along the way and why she had to get that inner strength and the inner core to become the woman that we all know." —Darrell Gallagher, Crystal Dynamics

Tomb Raider throws rape, assault, and a hostile environment at Lara Croft to make her a hero - Ben Kuchera, Penny Arcade

vs.

Tomb Raider is not torture porn - Rus McLaughlin, VentureBeat

Also:

Review: Tomb Raider hurts so good - Rus McLaughlin, VentureBeat

According to that review, "Crystal Dynamics chopped out two of the greasier moments [...] and excised any other hints of sexual assault from the rest of the game." Despite the early hubbub about Tomb Raider's insensitivity to sexual assault and rape, nobody ever explained what those two "greasier" moments actually depicted. And the public never saw them.

Augh I can't believe I got stumped by this game but I'm at a tomb where you have to use an arrow to pull a light out of water because it electrocutes the water. I assumed you pull the raft as near as you can to the poles and then pule the light out of water so you can wade through the water to the stairs. Every time I try I'm about 1 step short of getting there. Any suggestions?

EDIT: just thought of pulling the raft towards the light so it can rest on it and maybe not electrocute the water. Hopefully it works.

yeah it did. drat that was more simple enough to get to me.

Yeah it's some kind of chemistry thing I guess? I dunno.

Turns out this game is way longer than I thought, for some reason I had it in my head that I was a lot further through it than I was when I was playing it yesterday. It just goes on! In a good way.

Something that sort of irritated me though, I suppose mid-late game spoilers after Roth died, and there's this shot of both of his pistols, it really seems like they're setting that bit up as "where Lara got her trademark twin pistols". Then they don't. Though, you get a pistol upgrade?

I just figured that would have been the obvious thing to do.

Section just after that though, was really really nice. The stealth section in that forest just made me think of Snake Eater.

That might work if she didn't spend the entire rest of the game murdering people effortlessly. If they were trying to go 'she's not quite there yet' they didn't really pull it off well considering both in and out of gameplay she's a massive murder machine who everyone is terrified by, a super genius awesome archaeologist, has braved the toughest conditions the world has to offer... she didn't really have far to go. This is less her origin and more like her first really bad day.

Like for an origin story it's more like they began with Bruce Wayne putting on the batsuit. Basically the only thing she hasn't done is kill a guy, and even the original Tomb Raider made a big deal over killing a guy.

I'm not complaining precisely but it's a lot more "Lara's first really weird adventure" and less "Lara's first real adventure." Which fits with Lara deciding she wants to investigate 'real' myths in the ending.

Not long after that scene (or maybe even during it, I'm not exactly sure anymore) you actually give one of them to Sam to protect herself.

If you really want to know and don't mind spoilers just read the following sentence. I'm still trying to keep it somewhat vague but you do get your second gun back, but only during the very last playable scene.

I still haven't finished - where I am in game = In my game, Alex has just died and i'm about to head into a bunker or something to find out about storms but the thing is, at that point Lara actually gives Sam her own pistol, not Roth's. It's directly from her holster, and this is another reason I was sure she was about to get both of Roth's.

Oh well. I read that spoiler by accident while I was replying so blah. I'm probably pretty close to the end anyway.

Question about challenge tombs: All the tombs I've done so far have been pretty simple and utilize similar mechanics. And are there legitimately difficult ones out there?

They are all incredibly simple, I'm afraid, and almost all just recycle the same handful of mechanics. The wind mechanic you saw is actually used for a later puzzle in the main storyline, you just get to encounter it earlier.

She sure falls down a lot, but hey, looks like she's getting up just fine afterwards so that's cool.

I'm 5 hours in and really digging the game, sure the whole "survival" aspect gets thrown out of the window pretty quickly and it doesn't take too long for Lara to become an 80's action hero but I like that. The combat's fun enough that I'll much rather fire arrows at evil cultists than just be limited to stealth, avoidance and staying alive. And even just generally I like jumping around in pretty environments collecting relics and whatnot.

I feel like the story gets pretty crazy quite early on in the game and Lara starts making comments about how she really wants to make these crazy cultists pay for what they've done or whatnot, so I don't think the disconnect between the story and gameplay is as big as people make it out to be. I mean, yeah, they don't exactly go hand in hand all the time, but it doesn't bother me that much, I guess I just find the gameplay enjoyable enough to forgive it. The shipwrecked survival backdrop is pretty cool and as I said the game throws realism out of the window pretty early on anyway.

Also not sure what all the fuss was about the death scenes, the more gruesome stuff seems to be limited to failing QTE's and even then it's nothing you haven't seen in videogames before.

It's not perfect, there are a lot of QTE's and while they are usually quick enough and cinematic enough to be enjoyable, it does get a bit tiring.. Also the tombs and puzzles in this game are pretty linear, I mean there's usually one solution that involves figuring out how to interact with an object that will help you climb up to where you need to go, which is great for me because I'm horrible at puzzles but I can see people being disappointed by that stuff.

Anyway, first game since Euro Truck Simulator 2 that I find myself playing more than 30 minutes at a time so yeah, I'm having fun at least
