Taxes! Taxes! So I know you're supposed to keep old files for like 3 years. Is it acceptable to keep a digital (scanned) copy of important documents (esp. tax ones) instead? If something comes up and I need my old W2, does it have to be the Real Thing or can it be a scanned copy?
|
# ? Mar 8, 2013 19:35 |

Scanned copies are good enough. If you're doing your taxes online with software like TurboTax, you won't even ever have an original physical copy.

Why does the manufacturer do this, and are shopkeepers legally obliged to respect it? I believe that, to be sold individually, each stick would have to carry the nutrition label. I have seen some food items that don't have the label, but have a phone number or website where you can find it.

b0nes posted:The pull chain in my room for the light is jamming up. Can I spray graphite or WD40 in there to lube it up? WD-40 is not a lubricant. WD-40 is not a lubricant. WD-40 is not a lubricant. Graphite may or may not help, but in my experience it kind of makes a bit of a mess. I have a bottle of teflon-based stuff that I like for light household use. The only thing that might give me pause is that it's an electric switch you're dealing with, and the wrong stuff might cause problems.

Isn't graphite electrically conductive? That sounds like a bad idea in an electrical switch. WD40 is a majority mineral spirits. It acts as a solvent and in some applications may leave a very low viscosity lubricant behinds. The mineral spirits will eat away any grease or other lubricants causing damage (ex. spraying WD40 on a squeaky bicycle hub will eat away at the grease inside of the hub resulting in ball bearing (metal) on cup (metal) contact without leaving a suitable lubricant behind. p.s. I could list multiple product websites that claim their product is something it is not. Just because the internet says so doesn't mean it is true.

WD40 is not a lubricant. However, it is a useful cleaner in some situations, and I doubt your light chain actually needs serious lube - more likely it is gunked up inside. So a little wd40 might be appropriate.

In a lot of movies featuring a Russian character, they frequently drop articles such as "a" and "the". Is this because the Russian language does not have any such articles? Is it so difficult for a Russian learner of English to get accustomed to using them?

I've mainly noticed it with Finnish posters on the forums. It's not a universal thing but I often see it when they refer to names such as Soviet Union or Winter War (I read the military history thread a lot )

Is it so difficult for a Russian learner of English to get accustomed to using them? Yes and yes. Check out the linguistics thread for more details. It's hard for speakers of languages without articles to figure out when they're needed and when they're not. Consider a newspaper title: "Area man gets lost in subway." It's natural for English speakers to feel out why it's ok to drop articles in this context, but it's much harder for a foreign speaker to pick up on these conventions.

Keyboards & Languages in Windows 7: I had spent a year and a half using Turkish keyboard layout for my laptop and would like to expand my horizons a bit to get the ä å æ ø etc needed for some other things I do. US International keyboard is looking great. But it would be nice not to give up my easy access to ğ and ş. Can I alter individual keys on US International keyboard to display ğ and ş as altgr options? I'm not comfortable messing about in BIOS stuff and can't find anything more helpful on Google at the moment. All the answers seem to be more focused on teaching people how to insert from the character map or do numpad shortcuts. I just want to hit altgr+g and get ğ, for example, so gently caress the character map. For now, I've been alt-shifting between TR and US to hit those quickly but it doesn't taste like victory.

Kind of a weird question, but here goes: I traded in my skis (I lost interest) for an exercise bike because I wanted to have something to get my heart rate up that I could use at home. Unfortunately I didn't realize until I got home that the resistance range is not that good. Even at the highest level I can get the pedals around pretty easily. Since it was a trade-in I can't return it. I'm wondering if there's a way to artificially increase the resistance further. The only thing I thought of was using towels (or whatever) to put it at an incline. This is the bike http://www.amazon.com/Stamina-1300-Magnetic-Resistance-Upright/dp/B001ICNNOY
