I watched Holes in my Shoes over the last two nights. It's a documentary about a 94 year old New Yorker and his completely remarkable life. From being a 17 year old super strong man able to lift 1100 pounds, to playing a pivotal role in ending WW2, to building most of the New York skyline, and a million other cool things. At 94 he could kick your and my rear end at the same time. A man that loved and lived every minute of his life. Go watch it.

Well crap. Lo is expiring tomorrow and I don't think I'll have time to watch it tonight. I mean it's only been in my instant queue for a year or something. Am I missing out?

It's an OK movie. Worth watching, but nothing revelatory.

It is worth squeezing in tonight before it expires if you can make the time though.

Franchescanado posted:That and Keanu got a haircut halfway through the filming process and goes from long hair and a beard to short hair and a cleaner beard, which can be distracting when they shift back and forth. I loved this about the movie. Keanu would have really long hair and a ton of facial hair and basically look like a hobo, and then in the next scene his hair would be cut short and his beard would be groomed. You get a good range of Keanu's in the movie. Overall, I was hoping the format of the movie would be longer interviews with the directors on the cover. Lynch felt like he only had a couple of minutes, while I was really hoping to hear him talk for 15 minutes or so about how digital film has affected his film making. Danny Boyle is great. He's so enthusiastic when he talks about making movies that it's impossible not to get caught up in it.

precision posted:That particular documentary is full of poo poo - the police/government they interview love the White family, because they're the only reason anyone ever visits that area. There's a reason they rarely get arrested despite being incredibly blatant about their illegal behaviors. I knew there was something "off" about those police segments. They just felt really stage-y and scripted, and they'd cut in with a one-liner that perfectly synced up with whatever was going on in the movie at the time. The movie itself felt more like that Mr. Show "Ronnie Dobbs" segment than a real documentary. Oh well, it was still entertaining and had some great Hank Williams III tunes in it.

The most real and most terrifying thing about that Wacky World of White People documentary is the one girl's son who keeps talking about how he wants to kill his absent father. She's all nervous about looking good in front of the camera and he just prattles on like children from broken homes tend to do. While it may be sort of fakey, the people really do have a ton of problems. You'd find a million of the same kinds of people at your local low-cost mental health clinic, but nobody's making a documentary about their hosed-up lives.

This was my major problem. I watched it mainly for the Lynch interview, and he's in it for all of five minutes. Richard Linklater was in it for, like, three minutes. They gave a lot of time to the Wachowskis, which wasn't very interesting. Danny Boyle did shine a lot, though. I also thought Fincher was really entertaining and energetic. Scorsese also had some really cool input. But yeah, I feel like there's hours of interesting interview footage that I'm missing out on and won't be included on DVD (which would be the only reason to buy it). I watched Hell House years ago, and remember it being pretty good, but it was after I watched Jesus Camp, which was much better and emotional. I was raised Southern Baptist as a child and even attended Awanas weekly (it's a form of boy scouts/girl scouts where you learn stories about the Bible, memorize verses, and played games) until I was 10, and Jesus Camp hits close to home. It's not on Netflix anymore, but I still recommend getting it if you have the DVD service. On the flip side of that, The American Scream is awesome. It's a great documentary about people who build walk-through scare houses. It's got really interesting characters, and made me enthusiastic to go out and do something artistic. It's a great movie to start the Halloween season on, so hopefully it'll be around that long. It's directed by the guy who directed the Troll 2 documentary, Best Worst Movie. I did find the ending to The American Scream kinda bittersweet. The main character decides to pursue his life dream to start a professional haunted house with all of his savings. While it's amazing that he's willing to take that chance just to be happy, it seems like a huge risk and worries me that he could lose everything for him and his family. I tried to find how his business ended up, but found nothing.

One of my facebook friends recommended Inserts. The premise definitely sounds interesting.quote:Academy Award-winning actor Richard Dreyfuss stars as a washed-up silent-film director known as "The Boy Wonder" who, after striking out in talkies, moves on to pornography. But with a career in chaos and a dead leading lady (Veronica Cartwright), he'll have to pull off a miracle to make a profit. Bob Hoskins co-stars as the Boy Wonder's money man, Big Mac, in this art house film that originally received an X rating.

It's like if someone took one of those films from the 50's or 60's where everybody's Acting with a Capital "A", chewing every little bit of scenery, and made it in the 70's. Richard Dreyfuss is absolutely the best part, though.

Just finished V/H/S. I'm not a big fan of horror or found footage films, but I thought it was mostly good. The quality takes a significant drop in the middle, but the movie finishes strong. Here's hoping the sequel isn't awful!

You goons have terrible tastes in what is comedy. Shaolin Grandma and Klown are unfunny and boring, end of story. And because I'm extra bored now, I'm watching Supernatural for the first time ever, kill me if I end writing lovely erotic fanfiction about the lead characters.

I thought Klown was hilarious. I tried to get a friend to watch it, but he refuses to give movies with subtitles a chance, got super stoned and texted the whole time, then complained he didn't understand what was going on.

On the other hand, I'm about a third into Fish Story, and I'm pretty sucked in.

I watched Birdemic last night because of "How did this get made" and holy poo poo that was a terrible movie. I think my favorite part of it was either the TERRIBLE CGI or the fact that the white actor that played the main character was given lines that sounded like they had been written by someone who had english as their second language (which I think is probably actually the case). Acting is terrible, effects are terrible, plot is horribly explained the whole thing is terrible. Just listen to the "How did this get made" podcast and skip the movie and if you don't like that podcast don't watch the movie. The only part that is even vaguely worth watching is like the twenty minutes following when the birds start attacking which is 45 minutes into the hour and a half movie. In all I wouldn't recommend it, and I love horrible movies.

Birdemic is really funny with a group, but I don't get that much out of it because it's so aggressively bad (and obviously just made by some friends and family). My friends and I could probably do better. Something like Troll 2 is a lot funnier to me because the production values are so much higher, they use real actors, it was produced by a real movie studio etc. and yet it's just so goddamned bad.

The only way to experience Birdemic is with a powerful sound system, or headphones turned up all the way. When I saw it in the theater, everyone in the audience was wincing in pain at the bird screeches. Plus the complete lack of sound mixing is even more pronounced.

I watched Timecrimes, which was pretty good. Don't make the mistake I made and watch the trailer ahead of time, though! Spoilertastic and makes the movie out to be super cheesy, which its not. It seemed like the US distributors had no faith that people would watch a subtitled movie so they spoiled the meat of it in hopes of pulling people in.
