Amazon.com is showing pre-orders for most of Universal's Alfred Hitchcock films for $16.99. No release date yet.

Saboteur
Shadow of a Doubt
Rope
The Trouble with Harry
The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)
Marnie
Torn Curtain
Topaz
Frenzy
Family Plot

Please note that if these are identical to the 2012 box set versions, The Man Who Knew Too Much has serious color fade issues but generally good transfer quality, while Marnie and Family Plot have horrible video quality. Saboteur and Shadow of a Doubt are supposed to be nearly perfect, while the rest are varied shades of very good to good quality.

Rear Window, Vertigo, and The Birds are not listed yet.

Why is it that when you have an awesome poster like this:

they decide to make the video cover look like this:

I know these decisions are made for marketing reasons. But honestly the poster would be a better way to market this. The poster looks exciting and mysterious. And it clearly shows who did that art gives a poo poo. The video cover looks like some bland direct to video alien movie with no effort photoshopping for a cover. Almost as if it was an afterthought to even bother making a cover for the movie.

Probably because the assumed average shopper reaction would be something like:

"Oh god! What is this? It looks artsy and I'm scared and confused and wetting myself in the Best Buy aisle! Help, I need someone in a blue shirt!"

"Woah tentacles, cool! This looks like something that would distract me from the low self-esteem brought on by pernicious advertising! I'm gonna buy this, and then four Big Macs and pretend I'm having friends over. I hope there aren't any black people in this."

Is that the answer you were looking for?

Depressingly accurate. I hadn't actually considered how many people would prefer the cover to the poster. I was actually saying to a friend the other day "Why the hell didn't this get a wide release?" because I genuinely thought the movie has broad appeal. Then he pointed out that, no, it doesn't.

The big exclusive it has is a(nother) full length documentary. I don't think you'll regret it since the two-disc has plenty of extras already.

quote:

In Love with the Desert (SD, 1:23:54): From the year 2000, this retrospective Documentary, hosted by Lawrence of Arabia Property Master Eddie Fowlie, journeys through the landscapes on which this classic film was photographed. The supplement weaves together more than just location images; a wealth of information is revealed as it pertains to the making of the film, including intimate anecdotes and broad information alike. Fowlie proves an amiable, interesting host; he's a fountain of knowledge and a pleasure to hear discuss the film.

I sit very close to the screen when I watch it, because the feeling of turning your head right to left as the fighter planes swoop across the battlefield is incredible. I know it's silly, but somehow I feel like the shots were composed in a way that the film assumes you're seeing it in a large format where it's filling your entire field of vision, and the film doesn't feel nearly as epic when you're sitting 15 feet away.

No orange tint, which is a bit of a bummer, but the seismic upgrade in image and audio quality (especially audio) make it worthwhile. I turned my TV to "warm" and it kinda-sorta compensated.

The third disc has a deleted scene, Martin Scorsese interview, restoration documentary, a newsreel clip, a vintage making-of short, and all the trailers... all in full HD. One trailer even has 5.1 sound since it's a 70mm trailer. Also has the SD In Love with the Desert (on LoA locations) and interviews with Steven Speilberg, William Friedkin, and Sydney Pollack (from the 2001 DVD). Plus, you get a real frame of 70mm from the restoration, a coffee table book, and the soundtrack CD all in a glossy laserdisc sized box.

It's $50 more than Amazon's sale price for the 2-disc, but I think it's worth it for the extras and swag... and it's definitely a collectable.

So if anyone is interested I know the "manufacturing error" in relation to Who Framed Roger Rabbit?. The DVD included in the combo pack is in the 1:33:1 aspect ratio and it's missing a special feature that's included on the BD as well as the French and Spanish subtitles. So none of the issues are anything that effects the actual blu-ray disc. I haven't watched the movie yet, but I plan on doing so tonight. So I'll let everyone know how it looks.
