Power of Pecota posted:Paris is Burning is a really cool documentary about 1980s ball culture, something I knew nothing about before seeing it. Also, one of the house leaders interviewed for it had a mummified body of someone they murdered discovered after their death - my friend who recommended it told me that beforehand, and the second Dorian Corey came on-screen I was like "That has to be the person hiding a body." Paris is Burning is beyond incredible and heartbreaking, and it is literally required viewing for all contestants on the best show on TV right now, RuPaul's Drag Race. On that note, what the hell is up Drag Race's availability? They only have seasons 2 and 3, no season 1 or 4, no All Stars, and no Drag U, and we're well into season 5 by now. And I really do need to get around to watching Paris is Burning. It's been sitting in my queue for a while now, right next to the Before/After Stonewall films.

User-Friendly posted:I don't know how long Pretty in Pink has been up, but I love that movie. Seconding this recommendation. Pretty in Pink is a lesser-known John Hughes film released during the height of his teen-drama period - actually, in the same year as Ferris Bueller. It basically borrows and refines a lot of the ideas from Sixteen Candles, except Molly Ringwold gives a more refined performance and there's no embarrassing casual racism. The only thing I don't particularly care for is the ending. She should have ended up with Duckie. E: Also Ferris Bueller and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles are up too. Both excellent Hughes movies as well.

Season 1 isn't very good, I bet 4 will come up when Season 5 ends, and the biggest flaw is that they don't include the Untucked episodes, which means you're only watching half the show anyway. PIB is required viewing for anyone who posts in this thread, by the way.

Karate-Robo Zaborgar is not a great (or even good) film, but it has one of the best jokes/twists I've seen in a while halfway through. Consider watching the first hour. The protagonist's karate robot and love interest both die in an explosion, at which point it cuts to 25 years later, where the protagonist is a middle-aged, depressed, unemployed loser with diabetes (portrayed by a much older, much uglier actor). The movie continues from there. Mechafunkzilla fucked around with this message at 14:39 on Mar 11, 2013 |

HUNDU THE BEAST GOD posted:[Paris is Burning] is required viewing for anyone who posts in this thread, by the way. I agree with this statement. Don't know if it was recently added or not, but An American Crime (2006). It's an incredibly depressing and disturbing true story, and very polarizing - on RottenTomatoes, it has a 23% Critic score, but a 77% Audience score. It stars Ellen Page. It is pretty gut-wrenching and hard to watch at times, but worth it, on balance. It's been compared to Funny Games in that it was accused of being completely nihilistic and punishing with no moral center. I'm not sure if Film Threat is still any good, but they're one of the few outlets that gave it a very positive review: http://www.filmthreat.com/reviews/9654/

If you only know him from Battle Royale (or don't know him at all), he's a fantastic director as well. All three of these have been available for a long time (in the US at least). The sequel to Election, Triad Election is also available (and excellent) and expiring April first, so get on it. Anybody who liked Drive should like the films of Takeshi Kitano.

It is a really nice feel good movie. Jesus loving Christ I was not ready to handle this loving movie. The SARS Volta posted:The AV Club did a nice feature on everyone's favorite film, A Talking Cat!?! I watched this. The cat on the cover isn't even the cat they used in the movie. Eric Roberts is the voice of the cat and it sounds like he recorded the voice work in a bathroom with his head in a toilet, and he sounds hungover. Also when they were filming the cat, you can actually see in some shots the laser pointer they used to try to get the cat to do things.

It's not an easy watch. I wasn't surprised in the least to learn it was filmed on a softcore porn set. I can't stop laughing at the cover. That cat's all like, "Are you loving serious"

True, but there's always going to be even less famous or shittier actors than he, and they'd give their left nut/ovary to work with him I bet. Not because he's great or anything, but having "Worked with Eric Roberts" on your acting resume is still in some infinitesimal way better than just having "Working At Arbys/Extra on Repo Reality Show".

If no one has posted it yet, I'd definitely recommend the British show Top Gear. This show is the definition of entertaining. I don't consider myself a car guy by nature; sure I'll do a little work on my own cars here or there, but for the most part if it gets me from A to B I'm good with it. But watching this show makes me love everything about cars. The three hosts do a wonderful job of not only getting you interested in the car itself, but interested in it's performance, where it's made, how it's made, how it compares to similar cars, etc. The show will have you laughing, amaze you, surprise you, have you laughing again and most likely have you wanting to go to a local race track for a few quick laps. It is an incredibly well made, innovation, ingenious hour long TV show that gets better and better with each season. Clarkson, Hammon and May have their flaws, but it is how they play off of those with each other that will keep you entertained for hours. If you've got some time to kill (for 17 seasons worth of episodes!), definitely give this series a try.

Top Gear is definitely a great show. I haven't seen of a lot of it yet, but what I have seen was funny and illuminating. I got introduced to it with one of the eps where they were having celebrities run time trials, and Jeff Goldblum was so clueless that he didn't realize he was in a standard tranny vehicle, and was just burning around the track in first gear the entire time. Definitely the hallmark of a great show where they can take a subject many people couldn't care less about (cars), but make it interesting and accessible for everyone.

It's also fake as hell, so if that affects your enjoyment of the show (or, in the case of the electric car episode, your opinion on real-world issues) then viewer beware I guess.

Bloody Hedgehog posted:How is it fake? Do they just fudge facts, or completely make stuff up to suit the production? I think he's talking about the crazy challenges they do during the show. Like, buy a car for less than 1000 dollars then drive it across alabama with "we love gays" painted on the side and stuff. I hope they don't fudge facts about the cars, because that just doesn't seem proper.

Judging from animated gifs I've seen, Top Gear is a show wherein they just gently caress around in cars. But my gut tells me that it's really a serious car show for serious car guys. Which one is closer to the truth?

I mean it's scripted, a lot of the jokes are written ahead of time and they stage things like the gag with the ads on trains in India or the Tesla Roadster breaking down. It's still highly entertaining, especially for a show about cars starring a casual racist.
