On the Greg Anderson theme, I love Goatsnake so much but they don't seem to have released anything new since Trampled Under Hoof. Any recommendations for a band that sounds like Goatsnake? What's The Obsessed like?

I was listening to Burning Witch today and wondered what had happened to the vocalist, Edgy 59. Did a bit of Googling and found a pretty cool interview with him from a couple of years ago which describes what (in his view) the band was all about, why it broke up and so on: http://www.thesleepingshaman.com/interviews/a-f/edgy-59-interview/. He sounds like a strange guy, but it's an interesting read.

From there I found out about his current project, Bird Eye, which sounds a lot like Burning Witch going off the one sample there is online at their MySpace Maybe a bit less heavy and the production quality isn't great. That track is from a split with Transatlantic Rat's Atom released on Streaks Records here.

He's also been working on a band called The Poisoned Glass, who have released a single song on the Falling Down II compilation, a short excerpt of which is on MySpace here. From what's there I actually prefer that sound to Bird Eye.

Also made me aware of Burning Witch's one TV appearance:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdQKpq4qXfU
Stillborn

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDLCv2PYE5w
Unreleased song, Edgy 59 says it's called Siren Song in the interview. (1/2)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPH27hLNXPo
Unreleased song. (2/2)

Not really doom, but if you want to hear what one of his earlier bands, Junkhalo, was like, a few of their weird as hell synth/noise/punk songs from their Bugs Eating EP are available for free at ReverbNation. A bit like a less polished Boredoms.

You should hear the band Edgy is playing with now. It is sooooooooo completely terrible.

The Obsessed are generally more up-tempo than Goatsnake, but you should absolutely check them out. Lunar Womb and The Church Within are classic albums, and after Jug Fulla Sun I would call them Wino's best work. You'll probably want to start with Church, since it has Guy Pinhas on bass as well as Greg Rogers on drums.

Or, just dig some tunes and decide for yourself:

Cellos are a concert pitch instrument so they didn't even need to transpose it.

If those students were using this transcription as the basis for their performance, it's amazing that they sounded as good as they did, because it's completely wrong. The time signatures are all incorrect, and most of the bass riffs aren't even there.

Sleep on cello is still dope as hell though.

Isn't that a super rare radio promo thing? I think I saw someone on the RekRek forums who had one and said there were only like 20 copies in existence... So good luck. I would say ask on the RekRek forums but they've been down for-loving-ever, so maybe try at /r/qotsa.

I don't think it was 20, but yeah it was a pretty rare thing Josh mailed out. It's pretty easy to get ahold of the song - their website has it, and certain pressings of the actual Era Vulgaris album got it as a bonus track. I just was hoping to get the cool art, because the best one I can find is 244x350. I'll try that reddit.

Definitely a step up from the last album in that it seemed like they put a little more effort into it, but still plagued by their over reliance on the same stock boogie riff they've been using since Pure Rock Fury.

I agree on both points there. It's not a bad album, really. I think a lot of my impression is partly my fault because I had bought into the hype of this being "way heavy", and a return to older Clutch albums. I went into the album expecting that, and I don't think it delivers if that's what you're after.

However, the line "I'm a warmonger, baby, gonna industrialize ya" still has me cracking up.

I've only listened to the singles they've streamed so far, as well as DC Sound Attack because I couldn't resist with how much I loved the sound of the 30 second sample on Amazon, and I dig it all so far. Clutch is one of those bands that just has some power over me. I recognize the complaints and even share some of them, but even in the face of whatever problems exist their music gets under my skin and I can't help but jam to it. My love for the band is so unconditional it borders on motherly.

Anyway has anyone heard Stonehenge's album Bunch of Bisons? A friend linked it on Facebook maybe a month or so ago and I've been rocking it almost nonstop since. Really groovy psychedelic stoner stuff, like a harder driving Colour Haze almost. Dripping with lush organ, great riffing and a funky rhythm section. Really, really good.

Mr Freedom started playing and my mind filled in the lyrics with Subtle Hustle. That's never a good sign. The same guy who produced Blast Tyrant produced this one, and even he said this album should have been called Blast Tyrant 2. :eng99:

Edit: I should mention that Pure Rock Fury is my last favourite Clutch album. I remember I walked down from my high-school job at KFC to A&B Sound in 2004 to pick up Blast Tyrant on the day it came out. I put it in the CD player, listened to the whole thing once, my reaction was:

And I didn't listen to it again for ~5 years until I saw Clutch live in 2009 or 2010 and realized that their setlist is 90% Blast Tyrant material.
