I tried it and just ended up getting spawn camped by dudes with very accurate and damaging weapons. The closest analog I had to their guns was my bow and arrow which requires a charge up period during which my aim is thrown off by being shot with bullets. I think I killed 1 guy with my bow and 3 guys with my pistol the whole round.

I stopped playing the multiplayer after 1 round.

While I have no doubt some contingent of people could be found for almost any type of game, one has to weigh that against the cost of developing the game and how big that fan base is. MOST people would not want to play that game.

The idea of establishing base camps was an extremely stupid one, you NEED dynamic and swapping spawns or its just campfest, having an unlock system with guns that are clearly better than the ones you start out was also a really bad idea, I'm almost certain the upcoming DLC for this game is multi based as well which is retarded, it also makes me wonder if they plan to address any of the current issues the multi is having.

Honestly just give me a coop horde mode and I'll be happy.

I see that sentiment expressed all the time, in both games journalism and informally on places like SA, and I think 1) there absolutely are people who want to play that game and just assuming it would be bad is a weird foregone conclusion and 2) there are a couple of other options besides "having the theme and mechanics clash for the sake of telling the story we want to tell". It always feels like developers are unwilling to concede on either front, which is where that weird disconnect comes from. GTA4 is a good example; they clearly weren't going to compromise that series' core gameplay of jacking cars and making sweet jumps and landing on grandmas, because that's why most people love GTA, so why not tell a different kind of story other than one about an immigrant's tragic disillusionment with the American dream? Surely that isn't the only thing left, or the only thing Rockstar could come up with.

GTA4 is a good example of this because Saints Row 2 came out at the same time and proved a good contrast on the issue. The was pretty much no disparity whatsoever between the gameplay and story of Saints Row 2. You're a crazed, hypercapable, hyperambitious mad(wo)man hell-bent on power and revenge, and the cutscenes never suggest you are not. I really felt like Saints Row 2 came out as a better game from it, with some really incredible moments, and it made the impact of the two events you can't stop (the deaths of Carlos and Aisha) much stronger because the whole of the game had a consistency throughout. Sure, the story wasn't deep or meaningful, but it worked and it was good, and ultimately I think that unless you are a really good writer, your action game should have an action plot; it's hard enough to mix and match genres in media where the writer has much tighter control, nevermind one like this where the writing is often a secondary concern. If as a deloper you want to make video games' answer to The Godfather, you can't make your gameplay like GTA. I don't know what you'd need to make the game like, but I'd sure as hell play it if you could make the story interesting and have the gameplay flow seamlessly from it.

But all that said, I don't think Tomb Raider is particularly bad for this, convenient spike injury aside. The survival horror angle does actually progressively slide away as Lara gets thrust into more and more situations where she has to kill people. The initial section right after you get the handgun, and then the section as you climb for the radio tower don't really work with how they construct the narrative up to that point, but I felt there was a definite change in the narrative flow at the end of the radio tower section, which conludes Lara's first act of true heroism and follows it up with a commitment to put her life on the line to save others. Past that point I didn't feel there was much dissonance at all, and certainly not after Lara's "I'M COMING FOR YOU" speech when Sam's radio is discovered. After this, I felt Lara was portrayed as highly competent and determined in cutscenes, which matched up okay with the gameplay, and while it wasn't perfect, there have been games more critically acclaimed than this that were much worse on that point.

The part where he's climbing up the train has the hilarious line "I'm always climbing poo poo" grunted as he's about halfway up. I had bought the 2-game GOTY pack and the sheer amount of poo poo he did indeed climb (such as around the outside of an entire loving morro fort) was fresh in my mind, not to mention all the poo poo he climbed in the second game leading up to the actual non-flash-forward train part.

Physics puzzles with explosive gas and rope arrows are one thing but anyone who thinks the climbing in TR is anywhere near as intricate as the mazes of poo poo Nate's climbing through (and Sully is apparently levitating through) in any of the uncharted games is mistaken. I sort of like the change of pace because at some point the "HEY CLIMB THIS" brightly painted yet millennia old ledges and pipes and poo poo get overbearing. In TR they pretty much stuck to using white and maybe some yellow, and it fit in for the most part.

If there's one criticism I'd level at TR personally, it would be that I'd love to have had more climbing in the game, and far more intricate climbing. I like running around in 3d spaces Prince of Persia style where a wrong move is certain death, but I also like free-roam to ascend areas the way I want to (Assassins Creed). One understated fact of this game is that a lot of areas are a lot more open than you would expect. I recall seeing multiple paths to the same places on many occasions, which is something desperately needed in games these days. Freedom of movement in games is a lost art, so it's nice to end up in an area by taking one of a couple different paths.

I just wish there was more poo poo to climb, period. Near the middle end of the game when You take the gondola down to the suspended ship, I was excited to explore something like that. But it was just an action set piece instead. :sigh:

If this reboot means a sequel, I hope they really flesh out the climbing mechanics.

I have a couple quick questions about the PC version before I take the plunge. These have probably been answered elsewhere in the thread but the thread is huge and I'm trying to go into this game as blind as possible.

1. Can you remap keys? I'm the one guy on the planet who doesn't play with WASD, and games that make me use their key bindings really bug me.

2. Have the issues with NVIDIA cards been fixed yet? I know they released a patch to fix them but are they really fixed?

Thanks.

1. Yes, you can indeed rebind keys in the options menu.

2. It's worth playing now as I cleared the game before the release of the fixing patch on a Nvidia card and didn't have any issues to speak of. However that was in my experience and yours may vary.

This was one of my favorite little things about this game and honestly one of my bigger reasons for liking it more than Uncharted. In many cases, there are tons of different ways to get from point a to point b, and while it doesn't really change the gameplay, it adds a lot to the illusion that this is a real place and not just an interconnected series of set pieces. It's still not perfect and I kind of groaned when they introduced the special wall material for climbing with an axe, but it's still leagues above the set design in most games.

Also, would it really be that difficult for a multi-console title to outsell the new SC expansion, considering that Wings of Liberty had a pretty mixed reception and is PC only? I would think that the multiple platform angle could give Tomb Raider the boost it needs.

edit: I'm really glad that it's outselling GoW, if that's true.

I hope the survivors of this game end up being Lara's crew in the next. I always thought it was a weakness of the previous games that she didn't really have any supporting characters that persisted from game to game until Legend, and even then they popped up out of nowhere.

Watch the digital sales on SC2. Video game sales charts still have a tendency to ignore anything that didn't happen in a brick-and-mortar store, so I wouldn't be shocked if TR crushes SC2 in physical copies, but SC2 blows it away on digital.

Agreed this is would be a good reversal, although not if it means the next game has an escort mission...

Also they could have done this pretty effectively with Alex in this game, instead of hastily cramming in all his character development and subsequent death into half an hour near the end. Honestly I felt that way about most of the characters except for Lara and Matthias really.

God no. Kate Capshaw is 80% of the reason why I like Temple LESS than the other Indy movies. Yes, including Crystal Skull.

That's certainly, well, an opinion. I didn't necessarily mean exactly like that, but something along those lines. I thought her portrayal was great though, and a fun contrast to Karen Allen's character in the first movie.

I would be down for a boat base vs the mansion as long as they bring back the homebase puzzle stuff. I loved the chillax nature of taking a break from shooting tigers and raiding tombs to solve a home mystery.
