Has anyone ever received a tax refund from the Korean government? I got one last year for about 700k, but that was with the help of the people who aren't the manager at my first hagwon. I can't communicate with the old public school and they are decidedly less knowledgeable/helpful. Coming to the conclusion that sometimes you just lose out on 2 million one because people are incompetent/lazy/cheats. Cost of doing business in this part of the world I guess.

Yes, but the filing date is like January 3 so you're hosed for this year.

This is easiest if you just pay for everything with a credit card. If you have car/motorcycle insurance, they'll mail you a statement. There's a form you fill out and send in. Then you're done.

Need some advice from people studying here. I have been studying at Yonsei KLI and enjoying it. I am currently repeating a level and, while I have done very well on the exams, was careless about the amount of days I missed. A recent emergency put me just over the allowed amount. That means I automatically fail and two fails means I get kicked out of the school. My next choice for schools was Sogang and I have started the application process but yesterday got an e-mail saying that, because of my attendance record this quarter at Yonsei, they will not be able to admit me. Ouch. Is there any way around this? If I just avoided mentioning that I studied at Yonsei would they eventually end up finding out? Will I have the same issue at all major schools I apply to? My student visa is expiring soon so I really want to get something together. The next idea is Ehwa but I am really hoping I can still make Sogang work. guri fucked around with this message at 23:23 on Mar 20, 2013 |

Also, did any of you that took Korean classes at a University in Seoul take advantage of a scholarship of any kind? If so, how easy was it to get and how much did it cover? And which scholarship?

You could try to reason with them, preferably in Korean to demonstrate your ability, explaining the recent emergency. Remember that no matter what you do, you will have to take the placement exam at your new school. This means your previous record at yonsei doesn't matter anyway, so there really is no need to bring it up.

If that fails I'm thinking it won't hurt to go directly to apply and hoping I have someone different from the person I have been e-mailing with.

I need two things! Help! when I moved into this new apartment, there was a vacuum here that was somewhat dismantled, but otherwise in working condition. I've reassembled it, but it still needs a bag (or carriage? I believe it to be a bagless model). I'm clearly not searching properly on gmarket for this, as I'm only getting American-made $30 bags. If this really is the case and Korea just doesn't do bags anymore and they're nowhere to be found on gmarket, what about an LG service center? Would they handle something like this? I'm totes willing to spend $30 for a new bag/bagless bag if it means I can have a decent working vacuum. Has anyone had success with this in the past? Also, does anyone know of reliable service that would make posters of images I send them? I guess online printing shops?

You can't please every kid. Some kids don't get that this would be fun if they'd let it. I only have one class like that and I'm sure it sucks for them but its pretty lovely for me too. Then theres unavoidable circumstances. Like, today this girl brought her very young sister to class who started bawling 5 minutes in. I found out later she was afraid of my eyes and hairy arms.

It is public, but there are a lot of rich kids at this school. They surveyed last year, and something like 80 percent of the kids go to an English-specific hagwon. She's definitely one of the better ones, though. This is not typical of this school (and definitely not of my other school in a poorer part of town). I didn't actually feel bad about that journal. It was written after the first two class sessions of the year (during which we necessarily had to get a lot of housekeeping and procedural stuff out of the way), and she's a freak. I gave them 6 full days to write 5 sentences (and told them they were welcome to get help from whomever). It mostly just made me laugh. If she still feels that way in another few weeks, then I would take it more seriously.

The weathers getting warmer, that's nice and I just switched to short sleeves and cardigans (for the walk home at night when it's still chilly) but it just looks kinda lovely out all the time.

They're not called Japanese Giant Hornets. They're Asian Giant Hornets and those fuckers are HUGE and legit deadly if you get stung. It's just about instant anaphylactic shock if you're even mildly allergic, and the husband of one of the teachers at the high school in my little town was killed by one last year. From sting to dead, 15 minutes. Good news though, they're VERY noticeable when flying because they make a very loud, distinct buzzing. If you keep your loving distance you're fine. I've seen one while running and immediately turned around and hauled rear end the other way. So did the hiking adjummas that were making fun of me hauling rear end.

Have fun with the rabies treatment. When I got bit, the doctor wanted to wait and see if I developed any symptoms before treating me (rabies being a disease which can't be treated once symptoms develop). Also, the vaccine is not covered by our insurance for some dumb reason. Additionally, due to the very few annual instances of rabies, hospitals do not keep their own stores of the vaccine locally Instead the entire county's supply is kept in a single location in Gangnam and other hospitals have to order from there. It took about a week to get to my town's hospital for some reason. It's also kind of costly. Sucks, eh?

Huge news to report to everyone, I met a Korean celebrity last night at the casino. The Korean bitcoin model girl. Yes, that one. Actually it was my friend that recognized her at first, I didn't know what he was talking about until he mentioned the bitcoin thing, then it clicked. From the way she was talking about it, it seemed (as you probably guessed) that the guy was constantly talking about bitcoins and when he kept posting on the bitcoin forums about how "she" made a website and "she" was coming out with new photo shoots, it was all just her sorta-boyfriend pedoguy the whole time. She kind of seemed like she knew she coerced or brainwashed or something. She speaks English really well, though.
