By "time loop" do people mean starting in media res and similar editing techniques? I can't imagine Savages had time travel.

I was thinking about how I wish other action movies would take a more "day in the life" approche to their heroes rather tahn always going for the big massive epic stories where the world will end if the hero didn't defeat the bad guy.

Heres something weird I don't know what to make of: this movie has more facebook likes than Robocop. I only noticed that because the prince Charles cinema is doing a back to back screening of Robocop > The Raid > Dredd

I think Taylor Kitch is fine and wish he along with his movies would find success. Just a string of bad luck but with his style maybe a supporting or ensemble piece is his fit for now. He was great in Battleship and good in John Carter but I would not fault his performance or acting too much for the movie's flaws.

Any thoughts on the Dredd OST? I don't think I have ever listened to anything that has inspired me to want to bring hard justice to my town like this before. Its a really good OST, I am incredibly impressed with this. Unlike most OST's this will get lots of listens.

Yeah, the soundtrack's terrific. Also I just saw this last night and was totally not expecting to be so head-over-heels for it, even if our disc did go mute and start skipping during Ma-Ma's fall, and through the end. I've mostly hated the overwhelming trend of lazy color-timing that's permeated the film industry but Dredd's style really hit all the right buttons for me, aided by the really good on-set lighting (and cinematography - all the digital grain) and production design. All the Slow-Mo scenes were stunning and I can imagine it must've been fun in 3D, so I'm kinda bummed I missed out on that, but they were so useful at showing the appeal of the drug, which is really welcome given that it's a major plot-point (I don't think Minority Report does that). In that sense there was a lot of ambiguity to everything - Ma-Ma is a terrible person and slow-mo is, presumably, a terrible drug (given what it does to users' teeth) but Dredd is so inscrutable and kind of monstrous (I don't know anything about his established character) and it's kind of hard to tell where in the problem the influence of one ends and the other begins. Also it's great to see a nice, tight 90-minute film again.

So the producer did an AMA on Reddit recently, and he confirmed that there will be no sequel. Even with the nice home video sales, it's just not feasible to sell an R-rated sci-fi sequel to a film that bombed. He shot down the possibility of a Kickstarter funded sequel similar to Veronica Mars as well, stating that raising the necessary budget for a sci-fi film is quite a bit different than raising $2 million for a low budget present day drama (duh). The good news? They're preparing one Dredd short film, out of love of the franchise.

This is such bittersweet news, but I'm going to just focus on the fact that there will be at least a little more Dredd in this world, and that Karl Urban's grimace will live on in my heart.

Bummed about the no sequel but at least we have a film of such good quality that it will hopefully explode as a cult-classic.

Whatever, sequels suck. I mean, sometimes the second movie is pretty good, but then there's a super suckass third movie that spoils the whole thing and makes us feel bad for liking the first two. Let's just be happy we got to see a really cool movie.

I'm really optimistic about that short. With comics, sometimes less is definitely more. I mean, Dirty Laundry was probably one of the better Punisher movies - and it's not like there's a shortage of quick Dredd vignettes that would be amazing to see on-screen.

I noticed the soundtrack is getting farmed out all over the place in previews for other movies. I remember this also happening with Sunshine, which was strangely enough the last movie I absolutely loved that totally bombed. This might be more common than I think though. Dredd and Sunshine make up 2/3 of my soundtrack collection. veni veni veni fucked around with this message at 06:45 on Apr 2, 2013 |

I do not hold out much hope for an extension of the franchise. I was at a closing lunch a couple of days back with, among others, the CFO of a major studio. A few minutes in one of the co-investors for the deal we were closing asked him: "what are the key factors determining whether a picture gets made into a franchise?" The answer was "Well, number 1 is box office. Number 2 is box office. Number 3...umm...probably box office too." I asked if DVD sales and merch are taken into account for these purposes and the answer was "not really". Probably old news to a lot of the people in this thread, but I thought it was interesting (and faintly depressing).

Karl Urban worked with Vin Diesel on Chronicles of Riddick, so all he needs to do is come up with a role for Diesel to play. It's just that simple.

Argh, the DVD cover really bothers me. Not only is it lousy, it depicts something that never happens in the film. At no time is Judge Dredd standing on top of a non-burning building while other buildings are aflame. The only fire is in the building and Dredd is inside the building except for when he comes out and then goes back in again. Film: "Everything is exploding in here." Cover: "Check out what's going on over there." Yeah, that's way more exciting.
