I've never gotten around to playing it or listening to it but I know the soundtrack to Red Dead Redemption was done by two members of Friends of Dean Martinez. FODM isn't really western but I would imagine it would appeal to the same set. And you know what, if you like that I'd go ahead and check out Dead Combo. I'm really not too versed in the folk-end of things, but I know a lot of modern Morricone/Spaghetti Western stuff, often leaning into surf rock territory. The best Morricone rip-off band I know of is the Moe Greene Specials https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0r7ZyF51Nfg This is a little more western-styled surf rock. A little more tongue-in-cheek https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf6EvzdgFSw Spindrift is pretty excellent as well and tour pretty often. When they're not doing spaghetti stuff they can be kind of psychedelic. One of the members has a cowboy campfire-folk side project I believe but I can't remember what it's called. Might have just been a limited release album of Spindrift's. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEgNebSjNyA Might also be worth mentioning Duane Eddy as his twangy guitar tends to fit in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2z7nAaTr6JQ

I'm looking for some good alt-country/indie. I really dig Band of Horses, the most recent Decemberists album, the Weakerthans, Alabama Shakes, My Morning Jacket etc. I know that's kind of all over the map but I think a common thread out of all of that are songs with a decent hook and a twinge of country - especially steel guitar. Any suggestions?

Gonna assume you know Wilco/Son Volt/Uncle Tupelo, Ryan Adams, Neko Case, the Cowboy Junkies, and the various Will Oldham projects (right?) and recommend the Kingsbury Manx and the Radar Bros (neither of which I cared for as much after their third albums). The former gets a bit folk-rocky and sometimes incorporates slide and banjo, while the latter has kind of a laid-back Neil Young vibe with tons of slide, but not as much of a "country" feel.

Any suggestions? Aside from the other suggestions, there's always Gram Parsons, given that he's kind of the kid-father of alt.country. G.P./Grievous Angel is available as a single CD; if you're more a download person, I'd go for G.P. first and then get the other if you like it. Sticking with the classics, Kris Kristofferson's 'Kristofferson' is kind of in-between rock/country/folk and is a very strong record either way.

Lately I've been binging on a lot of The XX, Frank Ocean, James Blake, Portishead, and The Weeknd. Morcheeba, especially the album Big Calm has some great vocals and it's definitely trip-hop. Going in the opposite direction you might also like some R&B. Somebody else can probably give better recommendations, but check out Usher's recent stuff, Drake and Jeremih. E: Suspicious' recs are good. Not sure how I managed to forget Groove Armada. I work at a fine-dining steak house that is in desperate need of a new playlist. Whoever had the iPod before me was adding tracks like Call Me Maybe and artists like Adam Lambert for a restaurant whose clientele is aged, on average, about 40 to 50 years old. We've had several complaints this last week, so I asked the owner if I could have a go. I've stripped the iPod and left about seven songs from the previous playlist that I think fit the atmosphere (the atmosphere being appealing to somewhat stuffy and older regular customers mixed with many first-time, younger diners who are there for anniversaries or birthdays). Tracks I've left: OAM's Blues - Aaron Goldberg Despertar -Aisha Duo Amanda - Aisha Duo My Hometown - Bruce Springsteen A Blessing And A Curse - Harry Connick, Jr. Tracks I've added: Modern Jazz Quartet - Round Midnight (a 14-minute live medley that's nice and low key) I'd like to have around 20 tracks that play on shuffle, and hopefully convince the owner or manager to change the playlist at least every month. As far as I can tell, the iPod hasn't been updated for about six months. I think the goal here is to have subtle, albeit pleasant, background music that will enhance rather than detract from the customer's dining experience. Nothing that's going to start playing and cut-off someone's train of thought mid-mealtime conversation. Any help is very much appreciated!

Chill jazz like Stan Getz, Coltrane, Miles Davis and the like should make most people happy without being obtrusive or total elevator music (like that Aisha Duo stuff).
