Simple solution, use the info from snopes without saying where you originally got it from, then link to the sources that snopes nearly always lists. Same as using wikipedia: use the article as a starting point and then only show the citations on hte page if anyone calls you on your data.

It's the same thing as welfare (or anything else, really) in that anecdotes are more powerful than data. They once knew a union worker who took 3 hour breaks! And his boss couldn't fire him! So clearly ALL union people are that way. Just lazy people sucking money out of the precious job creators (:911:)

Instead of saying "hey, unions seems to help people and improve wages and working conditions, I want to join a union!" people say "hey, gently caress you, i'm miserable and making minimum wage, so should you :argh:" Crab mentality.

There's two people in my experience who tend to be especially anti-union, as opposed to feeling that unions need to be reformed in some way due to perceived leeches in the ranks, or believe that the only moral union is their own: business owners who want to get away with paying their workers in beans, and those who work in the tech industry. With the latter, there's some hope. The jobs are still so plentiful and well-paying that many are led think unions aren't necessary. Couple this with a total lack of labor history being taught in our schools (public or private), and you have a whole class of people who completely take their working conditions and employee rights for granted. Education is certainly a helpful way of reminding these people that employers historically don't treat workers fairly out of the goodness of their own hearts.

I know a couple of anti-union people and their responses for why they dislike unions are one of two things. The first is "Unions used to be good, but they don't serve any purpose now so there's no reason to have them anymore." The second (which sometimes goes along with the first) is "Unions are corrupt and greedy and raise dues when the members get a raise so that the effect of their raise is negated so they're no better off than before."

Education doesn't seem to work either as they will invariably fall back on the first response if you show them the good that unions do.

I've also seen a couple anti-union working Randroids who argue that unions cater to the lowest denominator and that they could totally get better terms if they negotiated a separate contract. I'm not sure how best to answer them other than a)You really should be able to negotiate a separate contract, let me know how it goes, and b) It ain't the union's fault that they can't negotiate a separate contract, blame the Taft-Hartley Act.

This is FUNNY! Take a moment to read this. You won't be sorry.

In the year 2013, the Lord came unto Noah, Who was now living in America and said:
"Once again, the earth has become wicked and over-populated, and I see the end of all flesh before me."
"Build another Ark and save 2 of every living thing along with a few good humans."

He gave Noah the blueprints, saying:
"You have 6 months to build the Ark before I will start the unending rain for 40 days and 40 nights."

Six months later, the Lord looked down and saw Noah weeping in his yard - but no Ark."Noah!," He roared, "I'm about to start the rain! Where is the Ark?"

"Forgive me, Lord," begged Noah, "but things have changed."
"I needed a Building Permit."
"I've been arguing with the Boat Inspector about the need for a sprinkler system."

"My homeowners association claim that I've violated the
Neighborhood by-laws by building the Ark in my back yard and exceeding the height limitations. We had to go to the local Planning Committee for a decision."

"Then the City Council and the Electricity Company demanded a shed load of money for the future costs of moving power lines and other overhead obstructions, to clear the passage for the Ark's move to the sea. I told them that the sea would be coming to us, but they would hear none of it."

"Getting the wood was another problem. There's a ban on cutting local trees in order to save the Greater Spotted Barn Owl."
"I tried to convince the environmentalists that I needed the wood to save the owls - but no go!"

"When I started gathering the animals, PETA took me to court. They insisted that I was confining wild animals against their will. They argued the accommodations were too restrictive and it was cruel and inhumane to put so many animals in a confined space."

"Then the Environmental Protection Agency ruled that I couldn't build the Ark until they'd conducted an environmental impact study on Your proposed flood."

"I'm still trying to resolve a complaint with the Human Rights Commission on how many minorities I'm supposed to hire for my building crew."

"The Immigration Dept. Is checking the visa status of most of the people who want to work."
"The labor unions say I can't use my sons. They insist I have to hire only union workers with ark-building experience."

"To make matters worse, the IRS seized all my assets, claiming I'm trying to leave the country illegally with endangered species."
"So, forgive me, Lord, but it would take at least 10 years for me to finish this ark."

"Suddenly the skies cleared, the sun began to shine and a rainbow stretched across the sky."

Noah looked up in wonder and asked, "You mean you're not going to destroy the world?"

"No," said the Lord. " The Government beat me to it."

So, big government and liberal special interest groups save the world from a vengeful God?

Reading that email, I was also very glad that God saw all the horrible government bureaucracy and decided that instead of killing all human beings on the Earth except for the passengers and crew of one single boat, he spared everyone. The email obviously argues that the more suffocating and stultifying bureaucracy that is built up by humans, the greater is the favor of God towards those humans on this Earth.

Sorry for the late response, but I take issue with this.

Seeing as how race relations are still as...sticky...as they are in America, I would argue that the free market would make things even worse for minorities. Sure, if one realtor won't sell to a black family, the "free market will correct" (theoretically, I take issue with this too), but a free market in real estate would only serve to re-segregate parts of this country.

You are jumping to a very different interpretation of free market here though, what I am saying is that building restrictions are a rather unsubtle way of segregating. If it was possible to build apartment complexes in the suburb sprawl it would happen, since busing in cheap labor to tend your lawn is inefficient. I am not suggesting that realtors should be allowed to discriminate.

White flight and the like is enabled by regulation, rather than being the result of the free market.

You are just being dense now, I am saying that competitive forces would do a better job of aiding an egalitarian society in the case of zoning building heights. The fact that I used the term "free market" to express that does not entitle you to a strawman about allowing realtors to ban black peoples from buying houses. Noting that not all regulation is good is not the same as being libertarian.
