QPZIL posted:So much fist pumpin' right now. Did you go to Hopscotch last year? I'm wondering about logistics, as in I definitely want to go to the Sleep show but I don't know that I want to do the three day pass. My main question is that if you have a ticket are you guaranteed to get in a venue? It seems like one of those deals where there are shows going on at the same time so...I'm not sure how they can relate ticket sales to guaranteeing entrance to a particular venue. They had some cool acts last year, I'm very interested to see what the rest of the line up is.

Screw the Bongripper/Hate split, this is where it's at! Both sides of the split are great, and it made me want to go and revisit Conan's album Monnos. Preorders are available from Holy Roar Records in the UK on black vinyl. So far as I am aware there are no other colourways.

But I find it difficult to sort the good from the bad in his reviews because he's so effusive about everything. There's a cool forum there, though.

Posting because I got a ticket to see Bongripper and Conan together for FIVE FREAKING POUNDS. That's the best value gig ticket I've bought in a while. I am listening to Satan Worshiping Doom excessively loudly and am very excited for this show. Also, from what people are saying here, I need to check out the Beastwars album, yes?

I've been the last two years, and I've never been turned away from any venue. They seem to do a good job of matching artists to particular venue sizes. I mostly go to the Stoner/Doom stuff, which is usually not at all packed and in smaller venues. Last year I saw Deerhoof but they put them in an auditorium so the pit was full but with elbow room, and people could sit in the seats if they didn't want to stand. The most packed out stuff is always the main stage, but that is out in the open in downtown Raleigh and they block a whole street off for that. People will really jam in for the big names though, the Flaming Lips and the Roots were both so crowded we ended up just going back up to the Sheraton and listening/watching out the window before their sets ended and then going to more shows.

They had some really cool bands last year so I could see wanting to stick around for another day, but I don't know about three days. I lucked out my first year, and won a contest on twitter from @visitRaleigh. Otherwise I would have never gotten a 3 day pass, just a Saturday pass to go see the flips with some friends. I will, for the foreseeable future, be getting a 3 day pass every year. After 9 every night, there's just so many bands playing that it's hard not to walk around downtown Raleigh past restaurants and bars and just hear some music you like. And then you just wave your armband and walk in and enjoy. All kinds of music, and lots of metal. I skipped a bunch of metal bands I wanted to see last year just to branch out and see some other stuff, but there usually seems to be at least one bar every night with a metal lineup. Last year I think Saturday and Sunday had two metal lineups in two different spots on both nights.

Can anyone recommend a good Black Tusk album to start with? I just got back from seeing them live (never listened to them before) and they might just be my new favorite band. I felt bad for Today Is The Day (another band I had never heard before), they were great but they should've been opening for Black Tusk, not the other way around.

Humanfly are pretty good, I saw them open for Cult of Luna and Amenra. I need to actually listen to them on record though. Also, the new Intronaut is fantastic. I'd always kind of ignored them as being one of those bands that live in the shadow of Mastodon and Baroness. Not anymore. Proggy, sludgy goodness.

Those sure are some Sabbath riffs. Nothing wrong with that, mind. Chiming in to say Stonehenge are pretty sweet and I bought Bunch of Bisons, thanks for the recommendation. Also enjoyed Megachurch who I'm reasonably sure I found out about here (http://megachurch.bandcamp.com/album/megachurch). Nothing mindblowing but solid riffs with some cool sample work.

A good song is a good song. Originality is to be praised, but I don't really have an objection to one band sounding like another as long as they still write good tunes.

This, but also there's a lot of really original music being produced every day. It's just a stupid thing that I see people say a lot that always reminds me of "they don't make music like they used to". Blech.

Anyone heard of Hey Colossus? I read a review for their latest album yesterday that sounded interesting. I pulled them up on Spotify, liked what I heard, and then spent all day listening to their albums. They describe themselves as "stoner doom kraut sludge" and I think that fits perfectly. Their soundcloud (live songs and a few albums): https://soundcloud.com/heycolossus Two tracks from their newest album: http://mie.limitedrun.com/products/511995-hey-colossus-cuckoo-live-life-like-cuckoo And if you look them up on Spotify, 'Happy Birthday' is a nice album to start with (especially the track 'Overlord Rapture In Vines Part 9', holy poo poo)
