I like Dig and have had FD's El Dorado several times. The Widmer Nelson, even though it's got a few other hop varieties in it (so it's not technically a single-hop), definitely leverages the Nelson better than most other beers with it, I think. FD's El Dorado has always been a little too punchy, I think. @Bag: I am nearby. Just snagged several bottles of FV 13 (which is aaaaawesome). Have already asked about the coolship series. Will see what I can get.

As long as you keep it cellared properly, the sky's the limit. How did you manage to acquire 1985 Bigfoot? Or the person who shared with you? I'd love to score a Bigfoot made in my birth year (1986)

Try the RateBeer forums (gently caress BeerAdvocate). I've had some luck scoring 15+ year old beers there before. For a vintage Bigfoot, you're going to have to cough up some serious stuff, I bet.

FD's El Dorado has always been a little too punchy, I think. Give Elysian's Idiot Sauvant a try. I thought it was pretty tasty. I'm drinking what I believe to be Victory's best barrel aged beer yet, White Monkey. My only complaint is the weak aroma. The chardonnay and oak are prominent, but are balanced nicely by a honey sweetness and peppery/cloves spice. Everything is nicely balanced with a little heat on the finish. I very much enjoy this. On the other hand Blue Mountain Barrel House's Dark Hollow, an imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels, is conflicting to me. On one hand it's excellently balanced with fruity notes, hints of chocolate, and very light bourbon, but on the other hand everything feels muted about this. It's very subtle. One thing I do wish more breweries would adopt is their $7/375ml barrel aged beer system. I know it's not a great value, but I'd rather pay $7 for this than $15 for a 750ml that I have to wait to share to consume. I like the 375ml format since it allows me to enjoy the beer and choose to buy the 750ml if I'd like to.

Elysian is tough for me to get my hands on. I've had a few Blue Mountain BA offerings, though. I didn't know they were finally bottling those. The ones that I had just struck me as yet another beer that was barrel-aged purely for the sake of it. Too many breweries are taking mediocre beers and stuffing them in barrels simply because they can. To produce a great BA beer takes a hell of a lot of planning and talent. BM isn't there yet (but neither are most others doing it).

I'm back on the side of "the Oberon hype owns" because the bar had a bunch of swag and I got this for free last night Also their menu, they rotate their taps every few days (TIMG'd for huge)-

It was very sweet smelling, but I enjoyed it. The flavor didn't match, it was more citrusy, but I thought it was a good beer and interesting to try. Their Dark Hollow is pretty great, the more I drink it the more I like it. It's very subtle in flavors, which is something you don't expect from a BA beer, but it's growing on me. I think it's well worth the cost to try it though. It's not going to blow anyone away, but it's a solid beer and changes how I am going to look at future BBA imperial stouts. Edit: That taplist is too good. Where is it? Also does anyone have experience as a brewery sales rep? I'm applying to a rather big regional brewery and have no experience. I have experience at a liquor store, but not at this position and I have some questions. Midorka fucked around with this message at 04:00 on Mar 29, 2013 |

Grabbed some stuff today on the way home. Victory V12, FSW Wookey Jack, Odells Lugene, and OB G'Knight. Just walking through and picking stuff I haven't had before, aside from G'Knight. There was a good bit of Lost Abbey and Bruery stuff for $10, but I left my phone in the car so it was whatever. The only Bruery they had that I hadn't tried was the Saison de Lente (or whatever), but the Lost Abbey section was pretty massive. Considering that a bunch of other reasonably sought-after beers were sold out, it was weird to see the shelf just jammed with their stuff. How is Paradox Brewing? They looked moderately interesting, but once again, no phone so no way to check BA or RB. Also incredibly tired of seeing Great Divide bombers with RATE BEER 100 WOOO WOOO stickers. Like, we live in Denver, we can get that at all times thanks.

Has anyone tried Ninkasi Vanilla Oatis? There's not many reviews of it and I passed up what might have been a good deal. It's a 7.2 ABV vanilla bean oatmeal stout. If you've tried it, do you think it will age well?

Last night I stopped into my local bar to grab the Flying Dog Single Hop Centennial on cask that I couldn't drink when I was there for BCBS Coffee. They packed a shitload more Centennial flavor in than I remembered from having it before. That series of beers is shaping up to be a pretty good way to get a handle on the intense hop flavors of the individual hops. Initially they were interesting, but they didn't scream that single hop note like they do now. I ended up getting a ride home (it was windy and I am lazy), so I stuck around for a second beer while I waited and went for Sixpoint's Spice of Life Wakatu. I'll start by saying that I'm just not a huge fan of Sixpoint. Most of their cans don't tickle my palate in a good way (Crisp is OK, I like Diesel) and their drafts are all over the place in flavor. I didn't like the Wakatu. The marketing wasn't wrong about pine and vanilla flavors, but they neglected to mention the heavy cleaning solution flavors. There was a lot going on, but it came off as herbal in all the wrong ways.

Just a reminder to anyone who had been thinking about going... Split Thy Skull barley wine festival at Tattooed Mom's is tomorrow, 3/30 from 1-6pm. So far they haven't released a full tap list, but they did spoil Troeg's Flying Mouflan and DuClaw Devil's Milk. I have a feeling they will probably have Abacus on tap as well since I know Good Dog just tapped it so there are definitely kegs floating around. But that's just a guess. Also, last night I opened the bottle of Old Rasputin XIV Anniversary that my neighbor gave me and it was amazing. Insanely good. One of the best BA stouts I've ever had. deedee megadoodoo fucked around with this message at 15:18 on Mar 29, 2013 |

Hof Ten Dormaal's Barrel-aged Project #2: Cognac smells almost saccharine and not quite like I'd expect. Up front you get the tang of what feels like the beginning of a sour, but the burnt sugar, berry, and thick mouthfeel show up instead. It's pretty drat good so far, so you swallow and contemplate another sip. Then some kid comes along and shoves a wad of Bazooka Joe in your mouth. Except this isn't the hardtack bullshit that comes with your check at a bad diner. No, this makes you want to chew your own tongue to get at more of it. I love this beer. I want to write lovely ballads and star in a sitcom with it. I'd empty out the urns of all my dead cats and take them to the bar if Mekong would do growler fills. If you see it, buy it and send it to me. Or just sit on it and I'll show up at your house eventually because I'll know. I'll know.

Amber ale. A style generally but I wanted to do something interesting with it so I hopped the hell out of it and and gonna dry-hop it even further. About a pound of hops per barrel: simcoe, citra and galaxy. Gonna be just enough malt backbone to keep its Amber status somewhat relevant.

Odells Lugene was pretty alright. Much thicker than I was expecting, a very oily, molasses-heavy flavor for a milk chocolate stout. Also quite carbonated despite the density of the beer. Pretty solid despite my apprehension over buying something from Odells in a 4 pack, would buy again as a step 2 to chocolate stout after Young's.

Bottle share with crazyfish and some non-SA friends tonight. - Surly Smoke (mixed with everything below... pretty much). Good rauchbier, even though that's not my favorite thing. - BA'd Hardywood GBS... Meh. Don't get the appeal to this. Light, minimal barrel. - '12 Abyss. Listen to the label and sit on it for a while. Hop bitter when young. May be worth the hype with time. - '12 Gilgamesh. As good as hyped. If we didn't open better sours later, this would have been a world-beater. - BA Kopi Speedway. On par with Coffee Bourbon County. Maybe the best coffee stouts I've ever had, and I really don't like standard Speedway. Thank you, Furious Lobster for getting us this. - Bruery Cuir. Shocking revelation: It was very sweet! They really, really need to start bottling their stuff in 375s. There's no way- despite how good it was- anyone could finish this by themselves. - Beatification Batch 5. The sourest thing I've ever drank. And by far the best RR sour I've ever had. Brilliant. - Upland Blackberry Lambic. The best American fruited lambic I've ever had. Incredibly sour, incredibly unique. There's a little Indiana brewery embarrassing Cascade right now... - A friend's 9 year old homebrew barleywine. Still delicious! - HOTD Adam. ...But this is still better, despite what many people at the tasting were saying. - Seriously, my friend made a homebrew barleywine that is nearly as good as the best in the world. Nine years ago. - CW/LO BA Le Petit Morte. Brought this out because a bartender at Local Option told me the barrel was dying fast with this. 6 months ago. Turns out he was wrong. Still the best thing I've had from Central Waters and I love everything they age in bourbon barrels. - Pipeworks Raspberry Truffle Abduction. Not raspberry truffle enough. Lots of highly hopped imperial stout. Finishes with raspberry. Get this. Age it for a year. Will be great. - '10 Curmudgeon. Ages really well. - '10 Brown Shugga. Ages really well. - Sprecher Bootlegger's Hard Root Beer. Aged in bourbon barrels. Dangerously drinkable. It's exactly what you think it sounds like and just as delicious. - Cantillon Rise de Gambrinus. Wonderful. - 50/50 City Beer Store 5th Anniversary. Bought this for a friend as a thank you. He brought it back to the tasting. Was really impressed considering the mediocre reviews of it. Great porter with a solid tannic/wine ending. Not perfect but something I feel I need to hunt and get another of. - Cuvee De Tomme. '11? Very good. Unfortunately was the 4th best sour we had tonight. This is not it's fault. Just a bad draw... Very good night. I really need to go to bed...

The full list for Split Thy Skull was released this morning and it's a little underwhelming. But I'm still heading over in about an hour. Rogue Old Crustacean Troeg's Flying Mouflan Philadelphia Brewing Company Shackamaximum Iron Hill The Situation Golden Barleywine Widmer Old Embalmer Duclaw Devil's Milk Duck Rabbit Barleywine Boulder Killer Penguin Allagash Odyssey Dogfish Head Old School Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Stone Oak Smoked Old Guardian Kinda surprised that Abacus isn't on the list, but not really disappointed because I drank some on tap at Good Dog yesterday. The Iron Hill jumps out at me because I don't think I've ever seen Iron Hill outside of their own brewpubs. Kinda interested in giving that a try and I never go there since I moved into the city proper. Also the Stone Oak Smoked Old Guardian has been on my list and I haven't seen it on tap before and couldn't bring myself to buy a bottle without tasting first.
