The money doesn't come until a few months after the last episode airs, so she's still waiting on it. Probably mostly mundane things with a couple trips here and there though.

A logistical question: How much did it cost her for travel expenses? I'm in Florida and if I have to go to California, it's going to cost a bit... Plane ticket, some fleabag motel... Probably have to get a suitable few outfits too.

If the minimum I get is $1,000, and I spend more than that on travel expenses, I might end up losing money by appearing on Jeopardy.

Since it's taxed as income, you can deduct the trip out there, the cost of your hotel, and the cost of meals from your taxes as a business expense.

The first thing I thought was Bush, but then I thought "Na, that can't be right, but I'm pretty sure it is..." which is a recurring theme with me and FJ questions lately.

I don't watch Disney movies because I'm not a kid, nor do I have kids.

Also, I missed Eureka, but got like 80% of all the questions in the first two rounds correct. That Jeopardy was easier than most-- which is why the lady got such a huge payday.

If Jeopardy makes you insane with anger maybe you should watch something less enraging, like Sesame Street.

She's done that kind of thing on many categories now and hasn't gotten a single laugh. You'd think she'd have figured out to give it a rest by now.

I've been thinking this exact same thing. She seems like a nice enough person, and she bugs me far less than some of the previous contestants, but good god, lady, you're on TV.
Luckily, with her (at least) 100k, she can afford some nice clothes, among other things.

Ding-dong, the witch is dead.

That FJ was really easy. I knew the "citrellus" would throw people off.

I probably would have lost to Salvo, though.

There were a couple of questions I can't believe no one answered (at all, much less correctly), but that happens every episode it seems.

At least unlike Rebecca, when I guessed Orange, I read the part of the clue that said "food". She does that constantly, and it annoys the crap out of me. "Name this composer" and she names the opera, and such.

Also, what the Christ was with her British accent today throughout that British category? So glad she's gone.

However, I did get Pagliacci correct :clint: Only after Salvo named the main character instead of the title, but I still count it. It still counted for lady in the middle, after all.

Did you go to the auditions in Tampa back in March? I was at the 11am session.

They did mention that they have a deal with a hotel right by the studio, so I got the impression that we don't have to worry about hotel, only airfare, so if you make third place you'll at the very least break even.

Whoever mentioned you can deduct the expenses was correct, you DON'T have to be a business. You can also deduct gambling losses in the same way as long as you're reporting some gambling income, so...yeah. Tax codes are weird. I do think you have to file California state income taxes despite living in Florida (a state without an income tax, which sounds awesome until you take a look at our schools, roads, etc.) because the income was earned in that state regardless of your residency. I'm sure they have handlers who walk every contestant through everything if you get that magic phone call we're all waiting for.

EDIT: Oh and if you get selected, fly Virgin American. I flew them last summer from Orlando to LAX non-stop (except for an unscheduled emergency landing in Dallas because the fuel pump quit, that was fun), and it was the best flight I ever took. They're not really any more expensive than anyone else, but it's a much more enjoyable experience, I won't fly anyone else. It was only like 450 round-trip.

I took the test on the wrong night. Wednesday instead of Thursday. I just logged in to check my account and it was like "the test will begin in 5 minutes". So, I got 15 out of the first 20, then 10 out of the next 30... I would have passed either the Tuesday or Thursday test :(

They do have a deal with the hotel by the studio, but it's not free or anything like that - just discounted. There's a shuttle that goes between the studio and the hotel, too. I stayed a few miles away because the reviews online were so-so and didn't have any problems getting there on time.

I'm about 95% sure that you do have to pay California state income taxes as well.
