To give credit to Hilfenhaus he was our best bowler during the 2009 Ashes, so assuming he is fit he's worth a shot. Bird is the best bet though.

I like how they've rewarded shield performance by contracting 0 of the top 10 domestic bowlers this season and 1 of the top 10 batsmen

Thats the Ashes in the bag. As if we were ever in doubt. They didn't even find the courage within them to pick Cosgrove.

I'm still worried (as an Englishman) how many of the England players will be coming back from injury for the Ashes.

So Alec Stewart picked a dumb World XI thing which is dull and pointless but this was p funny:quote:The choice of the third fast bowler to accompany Philander and Steyn caused me the biggest headache of all. I immediately wrote down James Anderson, but a closer study of his figures show that he hasn't actually taken a five-wicket haul in the last 12 months and has a strike rate of 75.

Morkel might be a Saffer too far. poo poo, I think Siddle has had better figures in the last year.

Any bowler would have good figures with Steyn and Philander at the other end. Remember Morkel when he was spearheading the attack with Tahir and Kleinveld: 500 runs in a day.

Its like 2 different bowlers.

Brett Lee's figures were 59 matches, 231 wickets, @ 31.6 with a strike-rate of 53.1 during Warne and McGrath. Brett Lee's figures were 17 matches, 79 wickets, @ 28.5 with a strike-rate of 53.8 after Warne and McGrath.

Exactly, completely different bowler.

Look at how fewer wickets he took! What a slump in form.

Harmison at his best was a better bowler than Morkel will ever be. Morkel's the most overrated bowler in the sport. One of the main reasons South Africa are hopeless in ODIs compared to tests is that neither Steyn or Philander are great limited overs bowlers. South Africa have to rely heavily on other bowlers like Morkel, Kleinveldt, Pietersen, etc. to bag them wickets in ODIs, but they're mediocre.

Have to admit watching Tendulkar and Ponting opening the batting is pretty cool.

28 off 33 balls. Shameful Ponting. A depressing conservative batsman.

I was just writing a post about Tendulkar taking an IPL franchise down with him, and then Karthik took 24 off a Dan Christian over. Australia extending his career that much further.

The England squad for the Champions Trophy has been announced and - surprise, surprise - Ashley 'loving' Giles has packed it with Warwickshire players. Even if you ignore Bell & Trott, you still have stellar players like Chris Woakes (last seen serving pies in India), Chris Wright (never seen not serving pies in County cricket) and Varun Chopra (who probably deserves a call-up). Beyond that, though, you have motherfucking Rikki Clarke? gently caress off Giles.

I don't know who Rikki Clarke is but I think I remember an English poster joking about a worst case scenario where he would be called up.

Even the Indian commentator that ITV have rolled out for the IPL admits he hasn't a clue who some of the Sunrisers' (Deccan Chargers) Indian players are. Top quality competition then.

Considering the amount of money that's involved in it the IPL isn't that much different from any domestic twenty20 league in terms of players. A few specialists who turn up everywhere like Pollard and loads of domestic mediocrity.

The only enjoyable T20 tournament is the ICC World T20. Those are genuinely very entertaining. England winning it gave it that extra bit of class and prestige.

Indeed. Finn was getting silly with it and now the batsmen is rewarded for the bowlers error instead of potentially losing runs from a deadball.
