We shall pay him a visit. There will be a picnic. Tea shall be served.
Can people recommend me acoustic-y blues/indierockish music with great proggy acoustic guitar playing, and earnest boys singing their hearts out? Happy or sad songs, it doesn't matter. But. Hmm. Like if you were to cross scale the summit or cloudkicker or the really crazy shredding bits from between the buried and me. And take that technical proggy guitar skill and make it acoustic. Then combine it with, say, the earnest and heartbreaking singing sensibilities of tegan and sarah, or the silent comedy, or aa bondy, or something. That's the band I want you to recommend to me.

Yeah. Proggy Folk/Bluegrass Heartbreak. That's my jams.

edit: Maybe what I'm really saying is, recommend me Tool, but not Tool, and also if you can make it acoustic, that'd be the dopest?

I've really hit a huge rut with my music knowledge/rotation/whatever lately, and I'd really like to get back to expanding and finding new stuff to listen to. I'm pretty broad in my tastes, but I'll try and link a few songs in the styles that I like here (I don't know too much about genre classification, so I might be way off on some of this)

Hip Hop
Cunninglynguists
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCTYEl9jQuI

Brother Ali
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ScPoBEFl1Y

Gangstagrass
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyCrgQdXUb4

I also like MGK's polish/delivery, the production values on a lot of Kanye's stuff, Wu Tang, and a good bit of Jay-Z. I really haven't branched out too much, though, and I'd like to change that.

EDM-ish

Madeon
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHs99iVpnXU
(I really like this, but I've had a hard time finding something else with this sound)

Ratatat: I really like their early stuff and their remix albums, I almost feel like they were made for more of a hip hop sound)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WW8VmSfYLAU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64liF2VuLxI

RJD2: I really love the sound of the two songs I'll link here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lp-xN-o6W90
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czuteahWBNM

I was also on a big BMSR/Tobacco kick for a while, but I tend to gravitate more toward the more upbeat, groove-based stuff like I linked here.

Blues/Rock

I put those two together since that's the sort of sound I really like most.

Black Keys: early stuff, especially their first album
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZJLi0f0ZIA

Kings of Leon: big disclaimer in that I really only liked the sound of Youth and Young Manhood, then tried to talk myself into liking everything after that (I didn't)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VtRM9HgTjI

Robert Johnson
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MCHI23FTP8

Basically, I like a lot of guitar sound, a little stripped down, preferably with a Southern or bluesy feel. I tried The Weeks, but it just didn't scratch the itch for me, and after that, I've just been kind of blindly feeling my way around. Other bands I've liked in that same vein have been the White Stripes (but really hit or miss), the Raconteurs, and even Taddy Porter's first album (I regret nothing, gently caress you).

Old style/folk/I really don't know what the gently caress to call this

Old Crow Medicine Show
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33lfmCgxdAw

Trampled by Turtles: I actually found these guys thanks to aimlessly reading 20-30 pages of this thread in the hopes of blindly finding something I liked, thanks thread!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xjdkc14-zwQ

The Tallest Man On Earth
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wa3lyo_Eowc

Grayson Capps
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wUTXGjx85I
(it's impossible to find a version of this song that's not live, sorry)

Another thing I've really liked is this Dutch project that has a bunch of artists get together in this cabin powered by a gas generator out in the middle of nowhere and record their favorite songs, which spans from old hymns to old 60s folks songs, found here. I had a while where I got really big into Stax soul, too. I know this is really aimless and scattershot, but the problem is I feel like I've worked myself into a little corner musically where I'm comfortable, and now that it's getting stale, I don't really have any idea where to go. Really, any help at all would be appreciated.

It would probably be helpful if you mentioned the others and why they don't fit the bill so you don't get redundant recommendations, but here's a couple:

Sleepy Eyes of Death isn't exactly "8bit", but very much has that pseudo-80s synth thing going on and ends up doing sorrrt of a post rock thing maybe? They're kind of too bombastic at times for my taste, it seems a little too broad/cheap, but it's effective

Been listening to a tonne of TMG ever since he was on WTF with Marc Maron. It was a really interesting interview and he did a few songs at the end. Jumped straight into The Sunset Tree and 'splashed' around from there. John Darnielle is amazing.

Funny, I've been on a TMG kick lately and was just talking to my brother (who is a huge fan, has all the cassettes and poo poo) about similar artists. Unfortunately, we couldn't come up with much. Jeff Mangum/Neutral Milk Hotel has a similar intensity and immediacy, but lyrically is very different, and the Kinks have some concept albums that tell stories in a sort-of-similar fashion, but they don't sound the same at all. There is some John Vanderslice that I think comes close, maybe try checking him out?

So I've spent the last day repeatedly listening to the eponymous album by Roomful of Teeth. It's experimental a capella that spans a wide range of what is possible with the human voice, and I just love it. I especially enjoy the more choral-sounding parts, and am looking for something similar that's contemporary yet classic-sounding. I'm not as into the Einstein-on-the-Beachy talking-over-talking parts (although I am a big fan of a lot of Philip Glass's work), and am really looking for something with little to no lyrics, but at this point I'd rather cast a wide net and find anything vaguely similar than rule anything out too early.

I'll give those a shot just to see. Worst case, John Darnielle will surely keep making music until the day he dies. Amusingly, I picked up my first Neutral Milk Hotel album just last week and my first thought was that some of it sounded a bit like the Mountain Goats.

John Vanderslice is a good rec. He produced We Shall All Be Healed, and Darnielle has worked on some of Vanderslice's material. They released a collaborative EP called Moon Colony Bloodbath that might make a good introduction, if only because if you don't like Vanderslice's songs at least you'll get a couple Mountain Goats tunes out of it.

Franklin Bruno is Darnielle's collaborator on the Extra Glenns/Lens. I don't remember which other songs he wrote, but "How I Left the Ministry" is his lyrics and music and that's one of my favorites from Undercard. I'm not much of an expert on his material, but he's released stuff under his own name and with the bands Nothing Painted Blue and the Human Hearts. You can check out a pretty good Human Hearts EP on bandcamp: http://thehumanhearts.bandcamp.com/album/flag-pin-ep

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone (don't discount them based on the name) has a similar songwriting style, I think. Generally short story-based songs with some really incisive lyrics. His stuff doesn't tend to be as uplifting as tMG and he's not as excitable as a singer but definitely worth checking out.

Nina Nastasia was recommended to someone else not along ago and maybe it's just me but her writing also reminds me of Darnielle's. Like Casiotone, she's not as much about yelling as Darnielle but her voice is gorgeous so maybe you'll be ok.

I also like jangle pop, but I am already well acquainted with a ton of those bands, so I am looking for something a little more specifically like the above album (even Roddy Frame himself didn't really go on to make albums like that later in his career).

There's gotta be some DIY band out there, even with only a Bandcamp page, that's trying to make music like this.

That was probably me; she's one of my favorite musicians. No, she doesn't sound like Darnielle, but I could certainly see someone who enjoys tales of fringe/outsider/damaged types enjoying her music. Not my favorite album of hers, but lyrically Run to Ruin might be the best starting point coming from TMG.

I've been listening to Colin Stetson a lot recently. Judges was probably my favorite album of 2011, and I've really been digging the NPR stream of To See More Light. However, when I look for "similar artists", last.fm gives me mostly other indie artists who are riding some kind of experimental zeitgeist, and AllMusic has what might be a decent list, but I have no idea where to start. I dig the idea of experimental jazz that has a little more composition and a little less chaotic squawking to it, if that helps or makes any sense.

I like White Ring, although it's maybe more witch-housey

Looking for something along the lines of this. Especially if it's non-english. Help a fella out?

E: Nur nur nur put a description, dumbass. It's from the Smile, You OST. Hyena- a sort of relaxed piano-y sort of thing.

I'm not sure quite how much these fit what you're looking for, but Teargas is less techno-y, more industrial and breakbeat-y, really aggressive and very dark:
An Adagio for Tandems Stacked:

One Day Across the Valley:

and Forward Strategy Group is closer to the techno community you're talking about and their album last year was one of my favorites:
