It isn't good.

What is good is Haymarket's Indignari. No surprise since it's the base beer of Indignant, but holds its own against really good RIS.

I haven't had a lot of barleywines, and haven't had anything out of a cask before. It was really boozy to start and finished with a cherry/plum taste. I couldn't have more than one.

Beer share last night. It was certainly a huge step up from last time in terms of quality, and some were really out of this world good.

FV 13 is worth every overpriced penny. It had incredible balance with its sour and it was one of the best I've had in a while. BCBS 2009 is always fantastic, but a little thin in comparison to the more recent offerings. Low lights, if there really were any, was the BBQ, definitely missing a lot up front. Thank you HatfulOfHollow, your guide inspired me to hit my local beer store last night and make my own six-pack. I've now got a Victory Prima Pils, a Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro, a Founders Porter, a Ballast Sculpin IPA, an Allagash White and a Stone Ruination IPA.

As someone who just discovered this thread, something like this discussion that was going on a few pages ago is exactly the kind of thing I am looking for. I first started drinking non-macro beer back in college and now consider myself someone who is more knowledgeable than your average person on beer, but nowhere close to the level of most of the people in this thread.

A guide breaking down different styles of beer and giving a couple examples to seek out for each is great. What would be even more helpful to someone like me is if there were tasting notes for some of the beers written in a way newbies could easily understand. I think a lot of the gap between an "I know the difference between an IPA and a pilsner" person (like me) and someone truly knowledgeable about beer is a lack of vocabulary.

I would love to able to read along with a guide that walked me through a few examples showcasing different things to look for in a beer. Even something that had you try a mediocre version of a style and then a better version of that same style and pointed out the differences between the two.

it's probably more information than you really need, but you could check out the BJCP Style Center for a thorough breakdown between the different styles- what the main flavors and aromas are, commercially available examples, etc. you'll likely need to look up a few words (diacetyl, melanoidins, DMS), but it's very informative (and there's a mobile version). if you stick around the thread long you'll notice a strong dislike of beeradvocate.com, but their style page gives nice capsule summaries and allows you to scroll down to find what the site users consider to be the best examples. ratebeer.com tends to be a bit less ego- and rare-oriented, but their style guide is a little lighter on info. if you want an actual book, i enjoyed The Beer Trials and have heard that Tasting Beer is really good.

I'm going to have some slight disagreement here. OTWOA, firstly, isn't brewery only always. I distinctly recall getting a bottle at Total Wine once. Also PQP is in cans now and that's great. I prefer the Public to the Corruption, probably because Corruption is a Columbus single-hop beer and the Public is a good punch in the face of hops (and, kinda like Dale's, not really much of a pale ale). Some of their limited stuff is pretty good (the wedding beer for one of the owners was a citra bomb that I couldn't get enough of). I don't care for the Citizen, and I really didn't care for their attempts at sours.

I got to try Dayman last night, and drat was it fantastic. I've enjoyed about 75% of Stone's collabs I've tried, and this one definitely didn't disappoint. "FV 13 marks our first venture into the world of foudre beers. Foudres are giant oak tanks used for aging (this one holds 2700 gallons.) FV 13 is a blend of wild yeast and bacteria, a base beer with lots of malt character, and about four years of patience. The finished beer is copper in color, with an aroma of cherries and caramel. The flavor is a blend of sweet and tart, with notes of fruit and caramelized sugar. The full mouthfeel gives way to a tart, mouth drying finish.

8.9% ABV. Released February 2013."

Saw Lagunitas' "New Dogtown Pale Ale" for the first time in my area. This is a pretty good APA, although I feel like at 6.2% it's borderline IPA territory. I like a pale ale to be in the high 4's to mid 5's so I can have a few and not get wasted but that's just me. Other than that it's nice, very very hop forward with just enough malt sweetness to balance. Would buy again.

I had their Maximus IPA recently, too, and really enjoyed. It's true that most Lagunitas beer tastes pretty similar and if you like one you'll like most. But I like 'em, so I am glad they seem to be expanding and more readily available. The only real stinker I've had from them was "Censored Copper Ale" which was WAY too caramel sweet and fruity for my tastes.

I went to Fat Head's tonight. I had been there before, but this was my first time going there with a DD, so I got to a try a ton of stuff.

I started off with something familiar, IBUsive, an awesome IPA from Fat Head's which rivals Head Hunter, and is far more /citrusy vs the intense pine flavor of Head Hunter. I followed it up with a cask conditioned Head Hunter, which wasn't nearly as awesome as I was hoping. This was my first cask conditioned beer, and I found it to be a less-carbonated, more dull Head Hunter. I didn't find the flavors to be as intense as I was hoping, although it was still quite good, then again, Head Hunter is one of my favorite beers. I then followed that up with a Coronado Idiot IPA, which I found underwhelming after the former two. Idiot is advertised as an Imperial IPA, but I found it to be less flavorful than both IBUsive and Head Hunter.

I then decided that I had enough to drink, and decided to only split samples with my friends for the remaining few beers, which ended up being about 1 oz each. I got to try Hop Lightning, an "India Barleywine Ale" by Fat Head's, which was pretty awesome. It was quite hoppy, but not quite as hoppy as say, fresh Old Guardian. I wish I had been able to try a pint of every sample beer I got, this was the start of some awesome beers.

I also got samples of Bean Me Up Imperial Koffee Stout from Fat Head's, Saison #1, and Motley Brew, a Belgian Strong Ale collaboration between Columbus Brewing Co. and Fat Head's. Both of these beers were pretty good, although I don't consider them nearly as awesome as most of Fat Head's IPAs. I would drink these again, but I would be more inclined to get an IBUsive before both of these. Saison #1 is apparently the first ever beer Fat Head's ever brewed, and I found it to be an above average saison. Two of my friends had never tried saisons before, and they both enjoyed it immensely.

I ended the night with a 2010 Victor Old Horizontal. This was a fantastic beer, and even though it was super smooth, and there was no alcohol taste, I couldn't help but feel like I was drinking a big beer. This had tons of caramel and vanilla flavor, and was probably tied with IBUsive for the best beer of the night. This was my first time trying Old Horizontal, and I'm glad I was able to try a vintage the first go-around.

Man, glad I didn't grab that for my most-recent pick-six, then. I did grab Greenbush's regular IPA, Dunegras, which was entirely respectable if not in any way really notable. I also snagged a Sixpoint Resin, which I didn't much care for. Too syrupy on the mouthfeel and astringent on the finish. Not as balanced as I like in an IPA. I was, however, a big fan of the Deviant Dale's I also tried, and I have an Alchemy Hour waiting for me to sample as well.

A well-meaning friend brought a very special beer to my engagement party last night - when she pulled the Pepto-Bismol pink bottle out of the bag, all the beer nerds groaned in unison.

In all seriousness I had no idea that Rogue made another Voodoo Doughnut beer - this one is "Chocolate, Peanut Butter, & Banana Ale." Geuze/gueuze is sour. Gose is a style brewed with salt (or naturally saline water) giving it a salty flavor. Some tartness is generally part of the flavor profile as well, but it's not sour like a geuze is. At least that's true of the examples I've tried. Supposedly they're supposed to be partly lacto-fermented, so that may vary a lot by brewery.
