Eh, even pretax it's only 1600-1700 which is still only 50% and not 40%. It's just a bit disconcerting that sharing an apartment with someone I can be fine with a leasing office paying 700; but when it comes to applying for an apartment for 750, I apparently stop qualifying. But I do understand to some degree that these places are just dealing with basic numbers and that it's not really a per individual basis. I do hope I didn't come off as defensive, but I don't want to bunk up with strangers for 650 a month rather than live on my own for 750.

I know it doesn't seem to make any sense but for them it does. When you were at your previous place, you and your friend were on the lease. So together you guys had to make X amount of money more than your rent. If that magical number was 1000 for instance as long as that requirement was met they figured they were going to get their money.

Just as an example; my roommate and I were required to show 1600 in monthly income for the place we currently live. He works as a tipped based employee so his paychecks and w-2's don't show any income. I being a manager was bringing home roughly 2200 a month. I gave them my pay stubs and based on my income alone they allowed us to rent the apartment.

Maybe the place you want to live wants you to be double or triple the rent in case of something disastrous happening.

Having just finished up an apartment hunt, some of the places around Seattle were just straight-up advertising that they want rent to be no more than 30% of your (pre-tax) income.

So currently I'm trying to apply for an apartment by myself and having never gotten a previous eviction and having a relatively good line of credit, I figured it wouldn't be a problem. But apparently most apartment complexes are throwing up this 40% income number at me and saying that even with good credit, a large deposit, and any other hoops to jump through they won't even consider me. Is there anything realistically I can do in this situation without having to resort of couch surfing for eternity? Is it really that unrealistic of me to assume I can easily cover an $800 apartment when my monthly income is $1400? I really don't want to be homeless when I can easily pay for a place by myself.

It depends entirely on your cost of living. I spend half my income on rent and have no problems, because I live pretty cheaply. I don't have a car, I tend to socialise mostly at people's houses rather than restaurants or pubs (bringing a bottle or two is way cheaper than buying drinks at bar prices all night), etc. But a lot of people I know could absolutely not get by on what I make without making their lives unbearable, just because you get used to living a certain way. In terms of dollar values you'd be living on more than I am now, but depending on prices for stuff in your area, what you like to do and how you live that might not be practical for you. It certainly doesn't seem unreasonable for them to prefer to rent to someone with more income. Presumably such a hard and fast rule means there's no shortage of potential tenants.

I have a question about companies putting you on hold. A lot of the time when you ring up they play music at you but keep interrupting it with a recorded message telling you you're still on hold. The ones who tell you your place in the queue are great and I completely understand those, but what's the benefit of the ones that just say "Your call is important to us. Please stay on the line." Is it actually reverse psychology to make you want to hang up and call back later? Because I'll stay on hold way longer if I just get uninterrupted music. Every time that recording plays it makes me briefly think I'm being answered and then annoyed that I'm not. What's the reasoning behind it?

Is it an option to pick up a second job doing weekend shifts at a 7-11 or something, just for long enough to qualify for the apt, then quit it once you're in? Call the card's service phone number, explain that the card is expired, and usually they'll either write you a check or simply reissue the card by mail.

The Aeron is expensive but recommended for the quality. If you figure you'll buy a trash $100 Office Depot chair that falls apart every year, by the end of the Aeron's warranty it's actually cheaper to buy the quality chair to begin with.

RebBrownies posted:

Kind of. The gorey details are available here (PDF). Donors get almost absolute 'local priority', meaning they get first dibs on any cadaver kidneys in their Organ Procurement Organization (OPO). Here's a map of OPO's.

Cadaver kidney's are allocated locally, then regionally, then nationally (if there's no match/no one wants it/) depending on the number of points people have accrued. Besides the almost absolute priority on local kidneys, being a donor gets you four points for other kidneys, being under 11 years old gets you four points, being under 18 years old gets you three, and having a PRA of 80% of higher (meaning your body will go on the warpath against 80% or more of otherwise good kidneys) also gets you four. Then you get like a point per year you're on the waiting list.

I donated one to whoever could use it through NKR and started a kidney chain, so in the event I need one and NKR is still around, they'll prioritize me for ending a kidney chain. People who donate their kidneys to loved ones do not get that courtesy.

Incidentally, the donor is completely on their own for any followups, costs, or complications that happen after the first three months or so (depending on the recipients insurance), so for ethical reasons most hospital will only accept donors with health insurance.

Aeron is the model. It's just the normal office chair, not the stool or side chair.

I actually lucked out and got mine for free off of Tokyo Freecycle (walked miles in pouring rain both ways to get it and take it to work). It's old and some of the adjustments are finicky, but it still fits me like a charm. It's so much better than our standard office chairs.

Microwaves are non-ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation is the harmful kind, like X-rays and UV and gamma rays. Non-ionizing radiation is stuff like visible light, infrared and radiowaves. Microwaves used by microwave ovens are a bit special in that their waves are tuned to rapidly flip water molecules (technically all dipole molecules but let's keep it simple) back and forth, this is what heats the food. So unless you are taking a long rear end time to get the food in and out you'll be fine.

I'd still get a new one though, cheap ones here are like $30.

Don't worry. Microwaves don't harm people. Just pry off the door and run it freely. If you're really worried, then try not to look directly into the microwave when it's running.

Jesus. Come on, man. You already know the answer to this question. Please tell me you already know the answer. You're a biology student, for god's sake. If you really don't know, then go here.

Look, I'll even cut out the part you need to read, starring a guy who has your exact problem:

quote:

Adults and microwave ovens

A case of nerve damage by an exposure to radiation from a malfunctioning 600 watt microwave oven, operated for five seconds with the door open, with both arms and hands exposed, was reported. During exposure, there was a pulsating, burning sensation in all fingers. Erythema appeared on the back sides of both hands and arms. Four years later, denervation of median nerve, ulnar nerve, and radial nerve in both arms was shown on an electromyography test.[1][21]

600 watts is a low-range microwave oven. It won't kill you, but, really man? You're really considering permanent nerve damage for a loving hot pocket? If you're feeling depressed and value your life and health that little, then either get a therapist or take up a hobby, such as microwave repair or alcoholism.

The catch is that you will be staying at their hotels anyway. They might not make a profit if you go for the minimum of 3 days, but most people would make a vacation out of it and stay longer. Statistically most people would probably eat a few to most of their meals at the restaurant anyway furthing increasing revenue. Also be mindful of the mysterious extra fees (Ryanair manages to make a profit with these tactics so why not someone else?). They will probably make a tiny profit out of this even if nobody buys their stupid timeshares.

But I still wouldn't go.
