I'll probably be in the Durham area for like 3 days and Raleigh for maybe an afternoon. I probably won't be able to visit any breweries. Durham: Tyler's is great and right next to Durham Bulls Athletic Park if you're interested, I've never made it to Sam's but it's supposed to be great. A couple other options are Bull City Burger & Brewery as well as Fullsteam, which always has some cool food trucks parked in front. Raleigh: Tasty Beverage, Ridgewood, and Bottle Revolution are the stores. In addition to the other recs, Busy Bee is a cool restaurant/bar.

I've had it at their third year party and at the brewpub once. The bourbon-aged Eugene really is just meh. Smells like bourbon, tastes like bourbon, and that's about it. Speaking of Coffee beers - Coffee Break Abduction is really quite good. I think I've had three bottles in the past month or so. I really hope those guys start barrel aging their stuff because some of that *should* turn out amazing. I'm also in the process of convincing my wife that we need drive up to the Woodman's west of Kenosha this Saturday to stock up on Serendipity and one or two other New Glarus beers. I really am not a big fan of the Belgian Red or Raspberry Tart but goddamn Serendipity is good.

How's Earth B&B anyway? The website looks awful, how's their beer? Yeah, sorry about that. I was writing that post in bits and pieces during breaks between games of league of legends last night. I guess it sort of lost cohesion. Proofreading is a good thing. Agree about their website. It is pretty awful. But their beer is solid. Last year they won best new beer at the brew-vitational and would have been featured at Beer Week Opening Tap but for some reason they don't participate in any beer week events. I get a vibe that the owner is comfortable just having a nice small brew pub and he doesn't want to get caught up in anything bigger or more corporate. The owner has been brewing a long time - he created Victory Baltic Thunder. He's also a really nice dude. Additionally, his apprentice and eventual head brewer, moved on to help start Tired Hands. They are quietly making astounding beer that doesn't get talked about as much as it should. Also, if you do go, get the Seed flatbread. It's awesome. deedee megadoodoo fucked around with this message at 14:24 on Apr 18, 2013 |

That drive is really easy if you do it at the right hour (and I guess where in the area you're located). But from downtown to that Woodman's after 7 is only about 45 minutes and the same on a Saturday morning (assuming minimal Great America traffic). That was our load up spot for years for WI trips and I still try to make it up 2-3 times a year. And yes, Serendipity is my favorite of the fruit beers and I love them all.

On a side note, Pipeworks batch 1 was a barrel aged smoked porter...and it was awful. The Coffee Break Abduction I opened on Sunday was good but it was a semi-unbalanced coffee bomb. Not a bad beer but would have liked a little more of the vanilla to shine through.

Raleigh / Durham stuff: Seconding Busy Bee, Sams's, and Tasty Beverage Co. Also, The Raleigh Times Bar is near Busy Bee and usually has a good selection too. In Durham, go get a burger at Bull City Burger & Beer.

Another recommendation for Bull City. Great burgers for a pretty reasonable price (given that it's grass-fed free-range hippy cows)

Thanks to everyone for the Durham/Raleigh recommendations, I didn't realize so many people were familiar with the area. I'm going there with my wife who has no interest in beer (something I'm largely thankful for) so I'll probably be limited to places that have interesting looking food. I think I have one afternoon where I'll be on my own, so I'll just hit up whatever remains then.

You won't get a lot of funk, most likely due to the smoke replacing/overpowering it. But that was the only real difference. The rest of the expected peppery, herbal, floral notes were all hit. It was like drinking a summer bonfire at dusk (we need a BA emoticon).

If you have a source of unskunked Saison DuPont I don't know why you'd drink anything else. Not just any other saisons, anything else. Younger Bam Biere is basically all saison and not much wild character yet.

No, but that's a state law limitation. If our booze law people got off their duffs and opened it up they'd be candidate #1 to do it, as as far as I know they're the first bar in a grocery store in the area.
