Alternatively, join the FFL or fly to South Africa and ask around to join some merc groups. He probably won't die for asking. If he became an 11/12B RIGHT NOW, as in MEPS today, ships tomorrow, BCT starts on Monday, he'll still probably miss out on Afghanistan.

Maxed out my pushups at 75, stopped, and realized that I had another FIFTY seconds left. I don't even know how this happens, but I sure wish I knew what the gently caress I did right. a little late but i've literally never heard of a USAF person who did not regret picking 6 years instead of 4. 4 year enlistee: you get to apply for retraining a year earlier you get to apply for base of preference 2 years earlier if you want to stay in you get a reenlistment bonus 2 years earlier if you reenlist (and your afsc has reenlistment bonuses) you get to laugh as you get out / pcs earlier than people who were there over a year before you 6 year enlistee: you get 2 stripes, and a negligible pay increase you make e-4 6 months earlier than someone who came in with no stripes - this can let you test for staff earlier or have absolutely no effect, depends on date of enlistment you'll probably never be the lowest ranking in a unit if you have stripes already coming in (college education or boy scout or whatever) then there is NO reason at all to EVER pick 6. if you have no stripes coming in then there are VERY FEW reasons to pick 6, and you really shouldn't.

It's been a while since I posted, I just wanted to send out an update. I just finished up boot camp for the Navy, and I'm at my A school here in Fort Meade Maryland about to start learning to be an MC. If anyone has questions about boot camp ask away. I may be slow to respond, since internet is spotty here at the detachment, but I can hopefully help someone else out, as others helped me. The information you see out there on the internet is decent, but much of it is out dated and seems to focus on big events, as opposed to the actual experience. It's not hard, but at the same time it's not fun. Be prepared for 2 months of discomfort, and remember that attention to detail really is your best tool. You will find yourself doing some silly things and following stupid rules, but know you do these things for a reason. I'm really excited to start my A school training. MC really does seem like the best job in the Navy.

Do you still have to fight other dude with padded sticks? Do you ever get physically abused in any way besides "GET OVER THAT loving OBSTACLE WHOOPS YOU FELL"? Do you still have to wear those dumb poo poo glasses? Is it hard to sleep? What was the average age? 3 minute meals? Is anybody fat? Do you have a degree?

Jesus! What's up Fort Meade buddy? If you have any questions about the area feel free to ask me. First of all, don't eat at the burger king on base. They recently reopened, but this is why they closed. Do not click if you ever want to drink from a soda fountain again. If you want a good meal you'll have to go off base, anything north is the mall, not really good food, mostly chains. There's also a casino which makes the area kind of scummy and there's never any parking. I never go to the mall, but the theater there is really nice. To the south you have the Odenton/Croften area. Down route 3 there are a lot of good places to eat. Northwest is Ellicott City, there's a 24 hour korean bbq place there called Honey Pig. I don't think you'll ever be on a night shift, but that's where you go if you want to eat at night. I don't know if they'll let you have a car or what your liberty policy is like, but whatever, you'll only be here for a couple months anyways right?

It's not so much about deploying to Afghanistan in particular. It's more about doing the job and potentially deploying at some point. He's not all "GOTTA KILL SOME HAJI," but rather he just wants to do certain things and fight from the front if there's fighting to be done.

I was scheduled to leave for BMT March 12 but due to a mishap with allergies I was bumped out of that contract and now I have a new one for July 23. My first contract was 4 years and I assumed (herp derp) that this new contract would be too but I didn't notice it was 6 years until I got home. I called the recruiter and told him this; he says that he'll send MEPS an email about it but the normal procedure for this is that when the person goes down to ship out they just cut up the 6 year and print out a 4 year contract. How much of this is bullshit and therefore how hard should I press to make 100% sure my contract is 4 years before I head down in July to ship out?

Navy has no combat training. Theres ealso no obstacle course, but I heard there used to be one. The RDCs aren't allowed to hit you or anything, they just make you do 10 counts until someone passes out... Just don't be the weakest one in the division. Sleeping sucks at first since the rack is rock hard, but you should be exhausted by the end of the day, so you should just pass the hell out. The BCGs are gone. They wear buddy holly glasses now. The average age was probably around 21. I'm 28 so I felt old as hell. The food is decent and they feed you generously. The chow line goes by height, so short guys get longer to eat. That was a perk. I usually had 15 minutes to throw down my food. Cereal with every meal. The fattys didn't last long... The RDCs did their best to get rid of them. I don't have a degree... That's why I'm here. I got a good job so no I don't hate my life... I'm here at ft Meade for 6 months. I'm currently on phase I lockdown liberty, but ill make phase II soon. We start our classes Monday. The maggots in the burger king are a bit of a sore subject around here.... A couple people I talked to ate there the day it was shut down.

You use sticks in the Navy if you go in as an HM (Corpsman) and end up attending FMTB (Field Medical Training Battalion) which is pretty much Marine Boot Camp Lite.

Is there a wait time between basic and tech school in the Air Force and if there is what do you do? Also it was gently suggested to me by two army friends that I should try going for aircraft loadmaster when I enlist. Supposedly it's one of the best jobs in the Air Force yet it's chronically undermanned - so what exactly is the catch?

I signed a 4 but had to change to a 6 (as mentioned above), they just do exactly what he said, print out a new one, have you sign it, and shred up the old one. I'm sure they'll try to give you the "signing four years means you can't reenlist" business but if you really don't want to make another trip for some reason there's that. also on an unrelated note we use the sticks in the Air Force, too. it's kind of just a big waste of time but I guess it's better than rolling socks. She  originally was a helicopter forest firefighter. Anyways she loves her job but I'm not sure there's much upward mobility in terms of career or pay.
