Dilla - Trucks is super cool. Sounds like rap from the future for some reason to me, kinda reminds me of Gorillaz. Maybe I'm insane but that Gary Numan sample is genius.

The crazy part is you have to start every beat from scratch pretty much since the memory was so limited on those things. They eventually added the memory stick capabilities, but I think originally it had like 8MB of internal memory or something. That's dope.

Mordecai Sanchez posted:Dilla's resurgence and reputation, even pre-death, was still pretty impressive considering he was partly responsible for those last two dull-as-gently caress Tribe Called Quest albums. Love movement I can't defend but beats, rhymes and life honestly stands up to their other stuff (i'd say it's better than their first album). I think "stressed out" was such a big "pop" single that it made a lot of dudes hate on the album overall, but it's seriously good. People forget that Q-tip lost a lot of his records and work in a big fire, so he had to bring in other producers to finish those last albums. Tip was like gently caress it but they had a contract. I think the label is more at fault for their decline than Dilla or group drama. Who does this sound like? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zR6w37J5A5o

You aren't insane, early Numan is just timeless. Dilla didn't even have to do much to that sample and it rolled over for him. Makes for a good track. Man, so many artists have done singles with Numan samples it is crazy, if he is getting a slice of every sale which samples him, he must be rolling in some fat stacks these days.

By far most of my favorite Alchemist production comes from him working with Mobb Deep. I think this stuff, as well anything off his album 1st Infantry is where you're going to get the most "authentic" Alchemist sound from. You can hear hints of it in Rare Chandeliers, Vodka & Ayahuasca, and No Idols but they sound completely different from his old stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPQAgwvLNYI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVtewT5UJWo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ew5_T6QJMY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLIGNSRgwsw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfieYWCzvus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hSizKVmL2Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_2GpbEh4GQ One of my all time favorite beats https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGM1UMMRmXc 7 RING SHRIMP fucked around with this message at 02:47 on Apr 19, 2013 |

mini-review of the Killer Mike/Big Boi show (kicked off the "Shoes for Running" tour): Killer Mike was great. It was just him on stage rapping with no hype-man. He mostly played truncated cuts from R.A.P. Music but at one point this drunk frat boy (the concert was in a big college town) must have called Killer Mike Rick Ross because he suddenly went off on this rant about how Ross is fake while all of his lyrics are real. Then he proceeded to say 'gently caress Rick Ross!' and started calling the frat boy Reagan. This culminated in basically the entire crowd on the floor raising up middle fingers towards poor frat guy and joining in on his chant of "gently caress Reagan." Then Mike got one of those rubber Reagan halloween masks out from behind the DJ booth and tossed it to the frat guy for a bit while he started to perform the song "Reagan" in its entirety. After the song he went back up to the front of the stage and was reaching down to the frat boy saying "Hey homey, it's all good, sincerely from the bottom of my heart, I'm sorry" and was holding his hand out as if to shake as the frat boy made his way up to the front before suddenly snatching it back and yelling "SUCK MY DICK!" The crowd was loving it. I'm like 90% sure this wasn't staged. (You can see the mask in his hand here that he retrieved back from the crowd - also some guy in front of us was taking video at a really bad angle the whole time on his PSP) Big Boi was pretty good too, I've seen him before. He had a hype man out with him but also a drummer and guitar player although I think they added more noise and chaos to the mix than anything else. Some of the songs just devolved into straight noise with some really hurried rapping over it. Big Boi did a bunch of medleys of his verses from various Outkast songs over the ages (including Skew it on the Bar-B which is one of my favorites of his from the Kast days), then plenty of material from his latest album. He got through a ton of material in total probably playing for close to 2 hours. He did ADIDAS and Whole World with Mike, then BoB came out as a surprise guest to do some of "We Still In This Bitch." All in all, it was a great show and if this tour is coming to a city near you and you like either of these artists you should definitely go. I think some dude from Vonnegut was there too because there was this awkward looking white guy on stage during that annoying "Follow Us" song which was thankfully cut very short after 1 verse. This was in Georgia though so YMMV on guests, I am pretty sure Killer Mike is on for the entire tour though along with some other misc. Dungeon Family members who performed earlier (I got there too late to see them). (BoB and Big Boi) Anyway, Killer Mike is a really really nice dude. We found him just sitting down out front of the venue after the show chatting with fans and people walking by. He happily posed for a picture with my sister and even offered to put it up on his Instagram because my sister didn't have a smartphone (though I don't see it today so who knows). edit: grammar and words thathonkey fucked around with this message at 22:46 on Apr 19, 2013 |
