Yeah but this guy is specifically saying, "The Full Moon Party wasn't enough for me." I don't want a month of that, but if someone else does it really sounds like Bali is the place to go.

ReindeerF posted:In your choice about anything touristy, the Philippines is never the best answer. That's the short answer. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews of Boracay. No one outright hated it, but a lot of people kind of complained a little that it was dead or full of only creepy old guys with their 19 year-old girlfriends or whatever. As well, I don't think that it's a massive party on the order of Bali or FMP or something. Boracay's getting a bit played out now; everyone prefers Palawan or other resorts with less exposure and price gouging since for a long time Boracay was considered the place to go for both locals and foreigners. Also, it's the summer holidays for us right now and there'll be a lot of college kids and families around.

Is Chang beer poison? The fact there's a Google autofill is only confirming my suspicions.

All major SE Asian brands contain a lot of preservatives to help prevent the beer from skunking in the miserable heat. They are not, however, poison because your taxi driver is still alive. With that said, I always drank Asahi if it was available (unless I was at that one brewery in Bangkok) as it seemed to be the cleanest available and as it had the right general taste for the tropics. Chang and Singa and Tiger are all okay though and if that's what they had that's what I drank. Oh an be aware that the budget SE Asian beers often have alcohol percentages of 7 or so and you dehydrate more quickly there anyway, I attribute most of the bad times drinking stories I heard there to those two factors. Have a liter of water and a B vitamin before bed. Ibuprofen is the preferred painkiller for hangovers as it's a bit easier on your stomach (though still not exactly gentle) compared to your other NSAIDs. Avoid acetaminophen / tylenol / paracetamol (same drug) as it's massively hard on your liver and will gangbang it. raton fucked around with this message at 19:41 on Apr 20, 2013 |

Boracay wasn't that great to me and it wasn't really that much of a party scene. If you want to stay somewhere beautiful with a girlfriend its not bad, but I don't think its that great of a backpacker party spot if that is what you're looking for. If your goal is to get smashed and laid, Bali is your best bet.

ReindeerF - great post wrt exploitation about a page back. It really echoes the sentiment of living in SEA, kind of a semi que sera sera situation. What is, is; and you try to make the best of a lovely situation. You can rah-rah rage against the system and complain how unfair and exploitative it is, but at the end of the day they're just like you and have to eat & sleep. Taxi drivers in Manila are a prime example of it, too.. they get paid, at most, 400PHP a day (~$9), plus any tips, which probably amount to 200PHP/$5. You don't necessarily have to give them more money, but poo poo like clothes or food will go a long way. Boracay - Spider House / Spider Lake resort in Boracay is pretty nice, although a little expensive for Philippines. Club Tara, too. (edit: i blame my absence due to having the runs in Palau. It can be tough finding a good place to crap in Kolonia, y'know..)

Just spent two days in Singapore. Great food, amazing architecture, -worthy amounts of high-end shops and everything is so goddamn clean. Turns out I need to spend at least another couple of days out here, though; some unspecified stuff happened and I'm booked in for a colonoscopy tomorrow morning. Hello again SEAsia goons. Our contingent is heading to Cambodia/Vietnam this weekend for a fortnight. Itinery looks something like this. *KL overnight then go to PP and stay at the hotel for 2-3 days. *Take the overnight boat to HCMC. *Stay at the red- "something" hotel. *Collect 2 more friends on the 4th. *Stay in HCMC until the 7th and them travel on the 7th to SR. We could do the overnight boat back to the PP, cos it'll be more interesting them the stupid bus (gently caress you I like the bus). *Stay at uncles in SR for 3 days seeing temples, and then got back to KL 10th-11th. *then Fly KL-GC on the 12th Can i get some suggestions for PP, HCMC and Siam Riep? I'm keen to see the reunification palace and war museum in HCMC, and someone mentioned a rifle range outside of PP. Killing fields will be a must, and the Wat temples in SR are already on the cards. I'd like to see some asia being asia. Some of you goons live here, what are some local sights or experiences you've found interesting? Additionally, 4 of the 7 of us have motorcycle licenses. So renting bikes and cruising out to the countryside is of interest. Negative Entropy fucked around with this message at 03:14 on Apr 22, 2013 |

Kommando posted:Can i get some suggestions for PP, HCMC and Siam Riep? If you're doing the killing fields you may as well see S-21 at the same time. Not exactly a fun day out, but definitely an eye-opener. The shooting range is fun but probably only if you've not done anything like that before. I doubt I'd go back unless I had friends visiting who particularly wanted to go. For some local places in Phnom Penh, head over the river (across the Japanese bridge) and go to one of the wooden restaurants on stilts that sit over the water. You can just lie about in a hammock for a couple of hours, eating tasty food and drinking beer. Or if you do rent motos you can head a bit further out into the countryside, like over to Oudong mountain. I recommend spending some time just having a wander around the city too, maybe check out some of the markets (central market is a pretty nice photo op, since it has a massive Art Deco dome in the middle of it). I've mentioned it before in this thread but if you get tired of the touristy stuff in Siem Reap, go over to the little beaches at the West Baray. Last time I went there were no other foreigners around, and it's a pretty nice place for a swim. Just a note on renting a motorbike, not sure about Vietnam but if the police stop you in Cambodia they won't accept your license, only a Cambodian one. The fine should only be a couple of dollars at the most though. Kommando posted:Is it better to take the day bus or night boat from HCMC to PP->SR? I remember the boat from HCMC to PP being ok, but don't get the boat from PP to SR, they're pretty terrible from what I've heard. Take the bus, there is a minibus service that's a bit more comfortable than the standard coaches. Or you can get a flight if you have the cash.

Tytan posted:Just a note on renting a motorbike, not sure about Vietnam but if the police stop you in Cambodia they won't accept your license, only a Cambodian one. The fine should only be a couple of dollars at the most though. In Vietnam, nobody cares about your foreigner license, you can rent a motorbike without having one anyway. Unless you get into an accident, the cops should leave you alone and if not, you'll just have to pay a fine/bribe.

Is Bali really the only other place in S-E Asia thats comparable to the Full Moon Party? I'm also planning a boozy break similar to Azmodaii, I've already done the FMP though so I'm looking for alternatives that might match it. Bali is significantly more expensive to get to from Europe than anywhere else I'm seeing, unfortunately. I'm fairly gutted that I never got to experience Vang Vieng before it got shut down, has nowhere else sprung up to replace it that comes near its debauchery?

Azmodaii posted:may I ask what was the reason for this jawdropping? Macau seems fascinating and something I would definitely want to do at one point (fairly soon even) Takes the notorious parts of Las Vegas, piles it all onto what was a Portuguese fishing colony, creating new landmass with concrete when the space ran out, and it's the only place that allows gambling in that neck of Asia. So what you get is a tackier, smaller, culture-stomping version of Las Vegas that's packed with more people and makes far, far more money than its Nevada cousin. Every shop is a Designer shop, and mainlanders flood the stores buying baby milk and medicine. What isn't built specifically to sponge up the elite's money is built specifically to hoover up tourists'. I decided to take a bus and ride it to the end of the line to get away from both those things when I visited (a real bus, not a free casino bus). It reminded me a lot of visiting backwater towns in France. It felt like the place had its own history that wasn't siginificant enough on the world stage to have been properly upkept, and there were low-rise apartments and litter in the streets, but not to a horrifying degree. It actually made me a little homesick for Europe - something the tourist-trap streets didn't.

I'm headed back to Thailand next week. I was there for a year a few years ago, and I've been dying to go back since then. So I'm heading back to teach English down in Surat. I'll be in Bangkok for a few days next week - May 1 to 4. I'll be staying at the Suk 11 guesthouse... on Sukhumvit Soi 11. Normally I'd look into other parts of the city, but I'm going to be meeting up with a friend that works for the US Embassy and his family lives nearby. Plus it's close to a lot of mass transit. So if anyone wants to meet up for a few drinks next week, let me know. I don't have too much planned other than a dentist appointment during the day. God, I can't wait to be back in Thailand. PS Sorry Sheep-Goats - I really did want to meet up in New York to go to Chao Thai but the time got away from me. Hopefully next time.

Has anyone had any experience with Rustic Pathways? http://www.rusticpathways.com/employment It's a travel/community service outfit that takes American kids on exposure trips to foreign countries. Apparently they'll pay for your international flight in return for you shepherding flocks of high school kids from the departure airport to the destination. I have a friend who was one of these chaperones and she hated it, said the whole thing was an inconvenient clusterfuck, but really I could put up with a LOT of bullshit if it saved me $1500. I'm living in Chiang Mai and looking to make a visit back stateside in the next 6-9 months, and having even one of those legs covered would be awesome. Hell I'm wondering if this could even be used for intra-Asia vacations.

Vang Vieng (and Laos as a whole) was more hippie drug based in my opinion. It had its fair share of drinking no doubt, but it had more of a "lets sit and smoke weed maaaaan" vibe rather than a "wanna fight about it brah" one like KPN.

Bali is definitely where you'll find the most intense partying outside of the full moon, though.
