Angry Grimace posted:The rumors are flying that Kiruko is going to be ending in WSJ Issue #22/23 and that Medaka Box will be ending in #24. Allegedly a new manga by Ohba/Obata (Death Note, Bakuman) will be coming out to replace one or both. I'm kinda sad about medaka box too. I say kinda because I'm honestly not sure whether I think it's genius or awful. Plus I haven't read it in like a year. Ohba/Obata makes me think it isn't gonna be another battle manga replacing it, so we'll see what happens.

Medaka has been in its fairly obvious final arc for a few weeks now. Although the arc before this one also looked pretty final.

I'm not sad for Medaka Box, but for Kiruko. I genuinely enjoyed the daily adventures of that naive but stupidly strong rookie cop! Seems like I have a habit of enjoying WSJ manga that get canceled! I loved Oumagadoki Zoo, too.

I liked it at first, but as I said in the last thread, it felt like it was just going in circles by the documentary chapter and I really wanted it to just get to a point, any point. It was stuck in that period of a shonen manga's life where it's establishing the main character, except Kiruko had already been very well-established. The arc with her surrogate father was a nice change, but right after that they went back to "HEY SHE WAS A MERCENARY, ISN'T THAT CRAZY?" I'm not asking for a battle manga, I'm just asking that you do something with your character.

I also kinda agree that in Kiruko there just wasn't development in the characters, nor did it feel like those characters were getting put into interesting situations that made me want to flip to the next chapter. It might be that Kiruko isn't complex or dynamic enough as a person to carry the series the way other gag characters sometimes do.

Wasn't Attack on Titan going to originally be published on Weekly Shonen Jump (or Jump SQ, which I guess it's the monthly one and would have fit way better)? Then the writer ended up going to a rival company after they told him to piss off or something and he ended up getting published and-- Holy gently caress. I'm betting that whoever rejected the AoT script musta been fired after that.

They didn't tell him to piss off, they told him that it was a good story but they felt that the tone and subject material wasn't right for a Jump manga (which is totally correct, in my opinion). I suppose the wording of it was a bit harsh, but it's not like they thought it crap or anything. The holy trinity of Shonen Jump has always been "friendship, effort, victory," and Kyojin pretty much shits all over that. Even in Jump SQ, Shonen Jump's monthly magazine (which has very different criteria and guidelines than WSJ does), it would've stuck out like a sore thumb. Then again there are people who think that they should have taken it anyway considering how much of a hit it's been, so perhaps the guy who turned Isayama down did get fired.

I liked it mostly because the guy really knows how to jerk my tears and the fights (until the last arc) had been creative and entertaining. So on that note, there's an extra chapter, set after the ending! It's short and sweet, though it makes me wish the series didn't end the way it does. Boy I'm glad I clicked this thread and glanced at some replies, or else I wouldn't have seen an extra Gash Bell chapter. It's still about as shonen as shonen can shonen, but eh, so what.

Always nice to see another Konjiki no Gash Bell fan. There's a new chapter of Sengoku Youko, in which there are some more cloud-on-roof actions. I know she's a kid, but does anyone think Tsukiko looks too thin on the last page?

I don't usually read Kuroshitsuji (also known as Black Butler), but the current saga, about stuff in an old English academy, had an interesting arc starting from Chapter 76 to 80. This arc is probably the first time I ever read shonen-style cricket matches. I don't think you need to know much about the series beforehand to understand it. The main character's the one with eyepatch named 'Ciel', the people cheering from him are his friends. Ciel is the 'Earl of Phantomhive'. The tall guy wearing black is Ciel's demon butler pretending to be a teacher. Other characters don't mean much. The school is divided into four houses, Blue the smart one, Purple the creepy one, Red the handsome one, and Green the sporty one. 'Fag' means an underclassman who serves upperclassman, almost like a butler. The basic rules of cricket are explained in chapter 76. So just go and read it. Cricket.

While seeing Thomas Edison's face on a high schooler's body is absurdly amusing, I doubt that it justifies the fact that this manga is now serialized. I'm sure that this was the best out of all possible choices the editors had. I hope Cross Manage is still doing well, at the very least. EDIT They don't even show the face in chapter 2!!! Dropped.
