Earlier today I tried Bracia from Thornbridge Brewery, and holy poo poo, it was phenomenal. It was labeled as a 'traditional ale', but I found it to be very similar to an Imperial Stout. I got tons of licorice in the nose, but the taste was more coffee/chocolate. A really awesome beer, and I'm hoping to find more beers from Thornbridge after having the chance to try this.

Since today's my birthday, I popped an Uinta Birthday Suit at the stroke of midnight. Though my girlfriend partook in a bit of it, I had to finish the rest on my own. Don't do that. It's not bad but you really need to share this beer with others. Intensely tart, but at the cost of subtlety. Even though there's some chocolate-y, fruity stuff in the background, the initial shock of tartness is so unbalanced that it hardly matters since it sticks around for so long. Not a horrible sour, but I expected more from a 20th anniversary beer. Especially from Uinta.

thanks for taking the lead on that one; i'll sit on mine for a while longer. Cafe Royale is around (Doom tomorrow!), maybe you were able to snag one as something more (birthday)suitable. hope your naming day has been as strong as the list of people you share it with (Aaron Spelling, Bettie Page, Lenin, Kant, John Waters, etc)!

gently caress. Really? John Waters kinda balances that out, but the Birthday Suit was meant to be an anesthetic for the three grueling hours I spent dealing with someone's interpretation of Kant vs Deleuze's Spinoza. It's only fitting it'd be his birthday as well, that rat bastard. As far as Doom goes, I'll be swinging by the TDubs whenever I wake up from my birthday stupor. Hopefully there'll be some Enjoy By left over, but I kinda doubt it.

For more thought-provoking content, I've had Rampant DIPA twice now. Both times, somewhere in conjunction with olfactory and taste, I get crab. Like, the shellfish. Starting to think I may have some odd reaction to a hop strain or something, since this isn't the first time I've had a taste that nobody else picks up on in the slightest. There's still a few left in the six pack, so I may have to do a live tasting and really dig into it to figure that out.

Siren Noir was a pleasant surprise. It has virtually no barrel characteristic, but it has a great coffee and chocolate flavor. Absolutely delicious.

This is from a local Philadelphia-area brewery around exit 31 on 95. I suggest all the philly/south jersey area goons swing by their brewery. Solid beer.

I made the road trip to get the Cab and a DFW World Wide Stout, which the store said they had. They didn't, so I got comped some cigars and went home with the Bourbon one. I am sure it will be pretty good.

yup, Kant. a lot of good soccer players and Nicola Sacco, too!

i've got a line on a Doom for you, and i'm happy to add Enjoy By to the list if you'd like me to.

as for crab, do you mean the actual meat or Old Bay seasoning? if it's the latter, that's a flavor i get on occasion, but haven't been able to pinpoint it, either.

where was this stuff purchased? i've never seen Aphrodite in VA, Porcine Unidragon was on shelves for about a minute a few months back, and Weyerbacher Riserva is always significantly more expensive than that.

also, if someone's dying to get a Cabernet Below Decks, i might be willing to part with a 2011 bottle.

Just got back from the tasting Glunz put on. Excellent selection, lovely crowd. There were huge lines for all do the major local breweries they distribute, but that meant easy access to all the importers tables. Highlight of the night was the different blends Petrus is putting out, their oud brun and aged pale are phenomenal. I didn't go to crazy, as my buddy had to drive and I wanted to be a good guest.

That was all from a store in Maine that I hit every so often. The 2012 Riserva was a buck more

edit: not shown is DFH Sixty-One and some SN Hoptimum that are in the fridge for tonight. The Sixty One is... interesting. Dogfish managed to pull it off, though. The grape must gives it this slightly tart berry-like finish that goes really well with the hops. I wish it was warmer out - this is totally a summer beer.

edit 2: Beer #2 of the night was a Widmer Dark Saison. Has anyone else had one of this style? Is it supposed to taste like a lager mixed with apple cider? It's not bad... it's just every sip my tastebuds are going "WTF are you drinking?". Like baby's first oud bruin or something. Odd.

Saint Somewhere has one that is a dark saison and it was pretty tasty. Looked darker than it tasted though, as it had few flavors making it more of a dunkel than a straight saison.

On another completely different note my six pack of Collete is way more sour than I expected. I'm not sure if this is what they intended as it tastes like my first batch of ok homebrew but by god I'm going to drink it.

Pepe Nero is the only dark saison I've tried, and I enjoyed it immensely. I tried a bottle that was aged for about two years, and while I'm not sure aging it did much, it was fantastic.

I'm going to be cutting back on beer for a little while (doctor's orders, weight lost something something save liver for ibuprophen blah blah), but I went out with a bang. In the last week:

Olde Hickory The Event Horizon - No light escapes from this, as the name implies. Nose is a ton of bourbon and some alcohol, with dark malts backing. On tasting it's perfectly balanced; toasted biscuit, chocolate, coffee, caramel and just a touch of bourbon on the finish. Rich, thick, with shockingly little heat. This is one of the best BA stouts I've had in a long time. Also it got me the North Carolina Beer Month badge, which was an unexpected bonus.

Allagash FV13 - Dark fruits and tart cherries without any of the overripe cherry of an old/oxidized beer, lactobacillus with just a touch of acetic. There's some funk as well, but it's very much second fiddle to the enamel-fizzing acidity. The barrel fermentation comes through as mostly tannic, giving a real backbone for the sourness to play off of. Spectacular.

Big Sky 2010 Ivan the Terrible - I've had Ivan before. It was a 2011 drunk in 2012, I think. A bit more aging didn't hurt it too much. Heavy barrel presence, lots of chocolate that did nothing to cover the bourbony booziness. There was a tiny hint of soy sauce that suggested three years is about the limit of Ivan's greatness. If you're holding a bottle of this age I'd recommend cracking it soon.

AC Golden Hidden Barrel Apricot - Oh, how cute. Coors tried to make a microbrew thing. Oh, it's even better - they tried to make a sour beer. Oh well, might as well give it a tr- hey what the gently caress? This is GOOD. It's not as sour as FV13, but has decent acidity and real fruit backing. Unlike Cascade Apricot, there's no sense of fruit skin in the mouthfeel, nor any real tannic component. I was very pleasantly surprised by this and still kind of hate myself for it.

Lagunitas The Waldos' Special Ale - This is the beer equivalent of a summer popcorn blockbuster. Huge, dumb, malty as gently caress with a kind of unfocused hop profile. I liked it in spite of all of those things. Serious hop heads won't like this much, but if you like the maltier side of big IIPAs this is right up your alley.

Le Brewery Odo Milk Stout - The label calls it "a proper traditional milk stout" and that's exactly what it is. Very tasty, and the price point was decent ($8.99 for 750ml, I think).

Hill Farmstead Everett - They only get to call this a porter because stouts are technically porters. :colbert:
Seriously though, Everett is a heavy, chocolaty porter with tons of character. If you live close enough to them you should be drinking it. If you don't, you should be cultivating friendships with those who do.

DOOM definitely isn't the first. Foothills has one called Seeing Double that was pretty good. Great Divide had a similar one for their 18th anniversary release, and I am almost certain that the Stone rep brought a barrel-aged IPA from them to a tasting in NC awhile back (although I missed out in this).

Burton Baton has a bit of barrel aging going on though, right?

There's also barrel aged Unearthly from Southern Tier. I've tried ~four BA IPAs, and none of them really stood out to me. In every single one I tried, all it tasted like was dull hops, which isn't exactly what I want when I grab something that says IPA on the label.

There are lots of "barrel-aged" and "wood-aged" IPAs, but Doom is aged in previously-used bourbon barrels, which is where the questionable combination of flavors come in.

Just picked up a bottle, I'm pretty skeptical about whether it will be good or not. But at $12.99, I'm willing to give it a shot.

In other beer news, Jolly Pumpkin just announced they are releasing more Biere de Mars Grand Reserve this Sunday. I still have bottles from the last release several years ago, outside of Bambic it might be the best thing I've ever had from them.

I don't know if "morbid curiosity" is the term I'd use. It does get good reviews, although again, "Founders," "bourbon barrel," and "IPA" are things practically default to a 90+ rating at either of the big sites. I'm definitely interested in trying it, it just sounds like a not-great combination of things.

Hardywood Park put their malty DIPA in bourbon barrels last year to slightly more positive than negative reviews, although some people really hated it. Founders has a bit more game in both the IPA and barrel-aging departments, though, so i imagine they'll do a better job of it.

I thought it was okay, although I know a lot of people who are sensitive to that fake hazelnut flavor found it to be disgusting. It's definitely a great buy at $5, even with that much age on it. If anything, maybe the age will cut back on the hazelnut flavor.
