iOS games are a lovely, lovely market to be highly-priced in. Just look at the New & Noteworthy category Crabitron is featured in:

Cut the Rope, Ninja Turtles, and Wizard of Oz Temple Run are all big name brands, and are all cheaper than Crabitron ($3, $2, $1 respectively). Bookworm is a pretty big name in the casual market, and it's free. Crabitron, the unknown app that all the iPhone owners will never see and doesn't show up on desktop iTunes unless you click the "iPad" button is the most expensive game on the list and 2nd most expensive app. Anyone looking to try a game out on a whim will look somewhere else first. If they buy one of them, they probably won't be looking for another app until the list is updated.

The only thing more expensive, by the way, is an app based on a book that had a radio play featuring Orson Wells, a movie by Alfred Hitchcock, and a recent West End/Broadway show that won both Tony and Olivier awards. If you haven't heard of it, you're not the target market.

That said, it looks cool as hell. I probably won't buy it, though, because I have tons of games I still haven't played yet, and this thread keeps telling me about other good games that I can get for free.

The devil you say!

Maybe this is an extremely dumb question, but if its so hard to make money developing for iPhone, why develop for iPhone? Bear in mind I am (obviously) not a game dev, but from the outside it seems that things like desura, steam greenlight, kickstarter, or just 'self publishing' on a website with a good word-of-mouth campaign are making it easier than ever to reach a wider audience on the PC. Just look at Starbounds kickstarter-esque pre purchase scheme.

It was a goldrush after a few simple games raked in the millions (think Angry Birds), but now the market is flooded with quality titles and it's hard to differentiate or get notice but people have been working on the games for a year or more so they can't just stop.

A lot of us are doing precisely that - either leaving mobile entirely, or switching to thinking of it as a secondary mobile entirely.

That said, there are a ton of games you just can't practically sell anywhere else. Mobile owns the casual/experimental puzzler market right now, so if those are the games you want to make (or all you've got the budget or time for), well, there you go.

... like, for instance, crabitron. That is a game you couldn't make anywhere else, outside of the Kinect.

EDIT: TRAINS.

It did ok, it's not our worst profit game anyway. That honor goes to our 99 cent game. Made a little less than half that Mage Gauntlet has so far. Should be cool to see how much we can boost the next game, using our Punch Quest active numbers, and also the upcoming android port should help.

Dunno by iPad only if you mean this is your first apple thing or just the iPad, so I'll just say these so you cant go wrong either way. Search Nimblebit. Download those, all of them. After several months once you come off your Nimblebit high (unless Pocket Trains is a thing, in which case there's like a force multiplier there when it comes out) Rayman Run, Spacechem and Jetpack Joyride if you haven't played the later 2 anywhere else.

Some great iPad only (or best-on-ipad) games:
- Magic 2013
- Baldur's Gate
- Little Inferno
- World of Goo
- Walking Dead
- Bastion
- GTA 3
- Ravenmark
- King of Dragon Pass

That should keep you busy for a while, and that's only going slightly into my purchase history for ios

Crabitron and Rigonauts are the only iPad only things that have come up lately. Almost all games are universal, these days.

Maybe Bard's Tale? I think it's technically universal, but I vaguely remember it being best on iPad.

The Apple Store app is great yo. Fire it up in an Apple Store and it lets you pick something up off the shelf, scan the barcode to check yourself out, then pay through iTunes without having to stand in line or flag down an employee.
