I honestly think that, assuming it comes out in Chicago, Saison-Brett might be the #1 beer I am on a look out for this summer. Hell even 2/3 of beers I brew now are saisons. I simply cannot get enough.

So almost a week after my 21st I've had quite a few beers that were drat good, and a couple that were kind of disappointing. Good: -Lagunitas Lil' Sumpin' Sumpin' - Pretty light taste, I got a lot of citrus from it. Very good, really enjoyed it. -Fegley's Brewworks Hop'solutley - Citrus on the nose but hops and a hint of alcohol in the taste, not bad at all -Allagash White - Tried on tap, at a recommendation from this thread. I really liked it, I need to try more Weiss beers. -St. Bernardus Abt 12 - Another recommendation from this thread, that I actually ended up getting for my birthday. Very good, I like the taste of raisin bread. -Brurey Sour in the Rye - Sour, and I mean SOUR. That said it wasn't bad at all, I really enjoyed it. -Ballast Point Sculpin - Good IPA, but I wouldn't pay $15 for a 6 pack -Old Rasputin IRS - I tried this cold, and then a little below room temperature. Cold it wasn't anything special, but at room temperature it was really good, I really liked the hints of dark chocolate. -Dogfish head Chicory Stout - I really liked the coffee notes in this, I need to remember to pick some up before it's gone. bad: -Dogfish head Burton Baton IPA - I'm not sure what it is about this IPA, but I just didn't like it. The flavor was very off-putting Stuff I have yet to try (these are all beers I have but have yet to open and try.): -Dogfish head Noble Rot -Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA -Lost Abbey Serpent Stout -Piraat Ale -La Fin Du Monde -Weyerbacher's Blithering Idiot E: Accidentally posted without finishing the full write-up Cant Ride A Bus fucked around with this message at 04:25 on Apr 24, 2013 |

Cant Ride A Bus posted:So almost a week after my 21st I've had quite a few beers Welcome to your slow descent into liver failure In general craft beer is meant to be drunk warmer. Not like room temp warm but it does a lot better given a few minutes to warm up than it does straight from a COLD AS THE ROCKIES BRAH iced mug at Chili's. Chilling suppresses flavors, which is why you want Natty Ice at sub zero but your imperial stout is pretty nice at 55 degrees. And not to kick off this loving debate again but Dogfish's schtick is being experimental and weird. Sometimes they knock it out of the park and sometimes they hit themselves in the face with the bat. I actually think Burton Baton is one of their better brews but it's an intense beer and not something I would have liked when first getting into beer I think.

So I went to the Strangelove's opening in Philly last night. It was like a who's who in there. I sat next to Tom Peters and I saw one of the brewers from Victory. I also recognized a couple food critics and restaurant people from the area. From the tap I had... Cantillon Rose de Gambrinus - which I hadn't had before but was wonderful Hair of the Dog/De Proef Flanders Fred - Fred still ranks as one of the best beers I've ever had. And this might be even better. It adds a great tart note. Dieu de Ciel Peche Mortel - This was a little hot for me. The flavor was right but I just wasn't into it. Dogfish Head Bitches Brew 2010 - The best DFH beer I've had. And one of the best stouts I've had. This beer totally benefits from a year or two in the cellar. The flavors develop so nicely. I'm going to pick up a few bottles for cellaring next time I see it. I forgot to mention the food. They were walking around with free samples of their menu. I tried the chili powder and cotija cheese dusted popcorn, the catfish po-boy, and some mushroom and goat cheese puff. It was all really well done. The catfish particularly was just about perfect. It rivaled the po boys I had in New Orleans earlier this year. Overall it was an awesome experience and the proximity to my office means I'll probably end up there pretty regularly. deedee megadoodoo fucked around with this message at 14:08 on Apr 24, 2013 |

Immort used to be great. I had it and loved it in 2006, and then had put off buying it until recently and the recipe had changed tremendously in that time. It wasn't always all peat smoke and booze with a sweet finish. It used to be this great vanilla-maple, slightly smoky old ale with the mouthfeel of chocolate milk. It's definitely not that anymore.

I have tried a ton of beers in the past few days, including my first ever framboise. A little run down: Bière Du Boucanier Red: I thought this was a really good Belgian Pale Ale, although very sweet. A girl at the bar ordered a sample of this at the same time as me, and didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I did. I enjoy my Belgian Pale's a bit on the sweeter side, where as I prefer American Pale's to be hop forward. This was good, and I'd probably order it again if I came across it. Columbus Creeper: This was pretty good. I've seen it advertised as both an American Barleywine, and an IIPA, and I'd have to say it leans much more towards being an IIPA than it does being a Barleywine. It was super hoppy, and had all of the notes which are common in IIPAs, very resionous and citrusy. I prefer CBC's standard IPA and Bodhi to this. Dark Horse Crooked Tree: I enjoyed this, but I was hoping for a bit more out of it. I just enjoy Dark Horse's stouts so drat much that I had thought I would enjoy this a bit more than I did. I think the bottle I got may have been a few months old, because it didn't have quite the hop punch which I think it normally has, and the hop bitterness it did have tasted a bit faded. Fat Head's Head Trip: An American made Belgian Tripel, and a drat fine one at that. It's around 10% alcohol, and it was very smooth, and had wonderful aroma/flavor. I'd put it on the same level that I would Golden Monkey/Thirsty Dog's Cerberus - drat good! Jolly Pumpkin's Bam Noire: I was actually a bit disappointed by this. I found it to be a bit bland, and probably the weakest offering I've ever tried from JP. I guess I was mostly disappointed by this because I was hoping for it to be more tart, but it was quite mild. I will probably pick up a bottle of this sometime and give it another shot, as I had tried it on draft. Lost Coast Indica: I found this to be pretty good, although it's not something I'd probably go out and buy a six pack of. It has a fitting name, as it reminded me a bit of . This was the first offering I've ever had from Lost Coast, and I'm definitely willing to try more beers from them after having this. Oskar Blues Gubna: I don't know why, but for some reason Oskar Blues just doesn't impress me as much as I hoped they would. We've been getting their beers for less than a year in OH, and the only ones which really stand out to me are Ten Fidy, and Deviant Dale's. Gubna was pretty good, but I found it to be rather uninteresting when comparing it to other IIPAs. Hey, at least they can all their stuff, that helps it sell. St. Louis Framboise: Holy poo poo was this sweet. Like really, really, really sweet. It tasted like drinking straight raspberry juice. Supposedly it has a bit of tartness, but not nearly as much as I would prefer. I knew this was going to be sweet, but it was a bit overwhelming to me. I ordered a sample of this at the same time I ordered samples of Bam Noire, and Creeper, and the second my server walked up to the table I could smell this one. After trying this, I really want to try a framboise which is much more tart, so if anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears. I also snagged a bottle of Dark Horse Pt5, but have yet to try it. Most of the beers posted above I tried a 4-6 oz sample of. Overall, it's been a pretty good week so far. I turn 25 next Saturday, I'm still trying to decide what kind of shenanigans I'm going to get myself into. I was also able to grab another two bottles of KBS on Monday, and my boss told me we're doing another Black Note release sometime in the next few weeks, so I'll be able to snag another bottle of that.

I was at my local liquor store looking for Parabola (not here yet) and coincidentally, the Firestone-Walker Beer Police came in the door and started inspecting all of the beer on site, including non-FW brands. They said they were doing this to "ensure our brand is being represented fairly" and loudly bitching about all the "out of code" beer from any brewery they could find. They did nebulously say Parabola should come in in the 'next delivery,' whatever that means.

Skip the St. Louis and Lindemans lambics and go with Boon and Hanssen's for easily available fruited lambics (Boon for their Mariage Parfait Kriek), 3F and Cantillon if you're willing to order from Belgium or win the 'right place at the right time' bottle shop lottery. Kudosx, for easily available not-sweet raspberry lambics, I think your only choice is going to be Hanssen's (albeit I've never had it). 3F's framboise is called Framboos and you will give up a figurative kidney to land one in a trade. Cantillon's Rose de Gambrinus is probably closer to what you're looking for, but unless you order from Belgium you're not going to get it very easily. edit 2: For American raspberry sours, Lost Abbey, Russian River, Upland, and (probably) Cascade make them. Not sure what the trade values are on any of them except Upland which will cost you a bit. crazyfish fucked around with this message at 20:10 on Apr 24, 2013 |

The only reason I've had the raspberry, blackberry, and Gilgamesh is because I had buddies go to the Bloomington Beer Fest thing last year and they brought stuff back. That fest was a few weeks ago and Upland didn't have this year's stuff ready. And they announced it still won't be ready for their own Sour Fest (in 2 weeks).
