Been getting into landscapes lately and I learned a new trick.

Take this:

Underexposed Land by jdorseydesign, on Flickr

And this:

Overexposed Sky by jdorseydesign, on Flickr

And in Lightroom Merge to HDR using Photoshop 6.

But don't tone map, Oh no. Definitely don't do that.

Instead choose this:

And send it back to Lightroom.

Then use Lightroom's Graduated filter and produce this:

Yep, Lightroom can handle 32‐bit images now.

I found this process to be much easier than the old method I used to use where I would bring all the exposures into photoshop on layers and use the Gradient tool with layer masks.

The rush is on.
That looks like pretty blatant HDR abuse, though. The transition between the horizon and land is just so unrealistically stark. The sky in the upper left, in particular, is way too dark for the land below it.

I have extremely limited experience with exposure merging myself, but I think you pretty much have to layer mask. Otherwise it ends up looking very cut and paste. I know others in here have much better advice on this, so I'll just post the only one of my annoyingly large number of efforts that I feel looks natural. I believe it was 4 exposures.

I agree with vote_no that the dark parts of the sky look too dark for the amount of light in the foreground, but the sky-to-ground transition came out really, really good for just a single gradient. I haven't worked with 32-bit images in LR, only in PS... I'll have to give it a try.

Seems like a bit of a photographers paradise. Specially if you like nature/landscapes.

I'm not going to lie, a good chunk of the reason I went was specifically to take photos.

Not long actually. When we finally found the plane and got out of the car I spotted the birds approaching from the east, sprinted up a small hill and snapped 2-3 frames of them and the plane. This wasn't planned at all, the real shoot was afterwards (which of course only produced crappy, static shots).

I am going to take photos. I was going to ask if the photos you sent of puffins where from Iceland. I really am hoping to see some!

Yeah, they are. We went up to Latrabjarg, which is the westernmost point of Iceland, around 400km from Reykjavik. We didn't really see puffins anywhere else (there were a few on the whale watching tour we did, but they were nowhere near photographable) and there, they were amazing. Honestly, I'd do it all again in an instant, and on the drive back to Reykjavik I was in insufferable pain from a kidney stone trying to pass.

We could get about 3-4 feet from them and they didn't care, if you got closer than they were comfortable with they would just subtly walk away from you towards the cliff.

Puffins by hookshot88, on Flickr

This was about as close as we usually got, didn't want to get closer because they need their space, but as you can see it's not a problem. Honestly, if you want good pictures of puffins, I would absolutely recommend taking three or four days and driving up to Latrabjarg, then back to Reykjavik. The fjords you drive through on the way are also the most beautiful I've ever seen. It was hands down my favourite part of Iceland.

I know you can see them in the Westmann Islands as well, which are closer to Reykjavik along the south coast, but I have no idea about that really, since I didn't do it.

Let me know if you have any other questions, I'm really happy to answer them.
