Guys, meet Hannah! She is tiny and fluffy. She's some flavor of self, but I can't for the life of me figure out what her coloration is called. I'm preeeeetty sure her eyes are black, though. We just brought her home this afternoon and our girls are mommying the everliving crap out of her.

She is a very poor fawn, making her appear beige under normal lighting. Her eye color is ruby and she is also a rex (it is just weakly expressed, so she doesn't have actual curls.)

^^That's a cute rat^^

Just got some texts from my breeder about how babies are finally being born. She has quite a few dams going to pop in the next couple days, so it sounds like I'll have a loooot of wee babies to choose from! I have first pick (after the breeder, of course) and we'll be going for 2-3 girls.

I could think about computer programming forever up here. aw crud.
One of my girls just up and died.

I'm not sure what happened. I let her and her cagemates out for playtime and she seemed like her normal spazzy self at first. I did notice she looked a little fatter than usual but I didn't think much of it. All of a sudden her hind legs gave out and she flopped over. She tried pulling herself around with her front feet but with little success.

Once I realized something was wrong I put the other girls back in the cage and laid her down on a towel. When I picked her up I noticed she was unusually bloated. Her breathing became labored gasps and then a few minutes later she died.

I'm guessing maybe it was some kind of urinary or intestinal blockage? Her behavior seemed totally normal up until maybe 20 minutes before she died though. I don't know how sudden the onset of that sort of problem is but it seemed to totally come out of nowhere.

RIP Chloe. You were a good rat. :smith:

JAVA, that sucks. I'm sorry.I've not had a rat die unexpectedly (aside from a very old rat dying of old age) but it would be horrible. I can't imagine how I'd feel if that happened to one of my boys.

I had just him out alone on the couch and he spent most of it sleeping on the other side of it, admittedly on a very cozy blanket. He's my fav even though Oswald has always been friendlier. Since we've joined the cages and all the rats are partying together, the lady rats have been way more active, it's great. Even Gypsy has been friendlier lately. They still squabble but nothing major.

WELP, I'm now hand raising two baby rats that were given to me whos mother pretty much just stopped lactating for no discernible reason. They're about 10/11 days old and big enough that they will prrrrobably make it. They're both eating well and look like they're gaining weight. One male, one female, a boring black mismarked bareback and a PEW. At least they will be super friendly!!!!

I am also picking up one (possibly two) hairless girls from someone on craigslist after work today. :toot: rats

... Molly bit me.

I call her my squishrat because she is the cuddliest, most affectionate creature in the world, and last night she was sleeping next to me, all sprawled out over my foot as she has done a million times before, and suddenly she woke up, spazzed out, and chomped on my toe. Actually drew a little blood. It was bizarre.

Now I can no longer scoff at the idea of my rats biting anyone, because Molly... what, had a nightmare? I have no idea.

Aww don't take it personally. It really does sound like a nightmare. I've seen them twitching their little toes and noses, who knows they could be dreaming. She didn't mean it!

My rats dont bite socks! Although I think I have the laziest boys in the world. I guess this universal rat/sock rivalry could be the explanation though!

But I wasn't wearing any socks!

Though Molly did used to nip at socks when she was young and goofy. Never hard enough to break the skin. I would really love to know what she was dreaming about, though. Something delicious? A wrestling match with another rat? I will never know.

I did! The "someone on craigslist" actually turned out to be a very cool ratguy who used to have an actual rattery in the Chicago area before moving to Savannah to go to SCAD, and then ended up here in Columbus for some reason I dunno why. He was slowly kind of getting out of breeding rats because he had gotten into training/showing/working GSDs and didn't have as much time for them anymore, and these were the last two girls from what is going to be his last litter.

He *said* they've been tumor free since 6 gens back and no/minimal myco flareups for 4 gens, and they are both SUPER healthy and friendly and awesome. It has been so long since I have had super socialized breeder rats and they are so fun. :3:

I was just going to get one but he offered me both for the price of one because they were literally his last two rats and the other one would have been alone until someone got her, sooo. One is a dumbo and one is standard eared, and they are homozygous DR's so once they lose the last of their baby fuzz they will be hairless.

They are about 7 weeks old and they do not yet have names.

My son wants rats for his birthday next month. He'll be 11. I joined goose moose and saw that someone in my area had two rats up for adoption, including their cage and stuff. I emailed the owner and expressed some interest and she told me they are 2 years old, and her son wasn't taking care of them the way they deserved. That made me a little iffy. Then when I asked when we could come check them out she said "Oh, btw, one has a cyst/tumor in his abdomen. It doesn't seem to be affecting his health." I should totally walk away, right? These rats are not good rats for first time rat owners, right? I've been looking for a rescue or breeder in my area but am having no luck.

Unfortunately yes. 2 year old rats might not live long, and these already come with health complications. Of course they deserve a good home, but as the parent of an 11 year old myself I'd say no.

Are there any reputable pet stores near you? Or you might find a breeder who freights or regularly travels. I've traveled a couple of hours to get to a good breeder, its worth it.

With those rats, you and your son would quite likely have to make the choice between surgery or having the rat with a tumor put to sleep pretty soon. I don't think it'd be a great introduction to rats. If the current owner's son hasn't been taking care of them, they probably won't be very sociable either.

Adopt a pet, enjoy its good years, then dump it on someone else when it becomes old and needs veterinary care. Classy.

There are many good people on Goosemoose. Hopefully someone more compassionate can give them a better home.

Have you tried Craigslist? I have picked up some "oops" babies that way, you just have to be patient.

I had to move Biscuit, my double rex/patchwork hairless male a few days ago to a better cage. He seems uncoordinated and easily startled and a few days ago he fell from the top platform of his large Critter Nation-like cage and hurt his foot. He's about a year old now and a friend of mine told me that double rex and hairless rats tend to have shorter lifespans, is that true?
Biscuit actually seems happier in his slightly smaller cage because to make up for the lack of ramps I put in some hammocks and tubes and he loves those. :3:

Hello again rat thread! I am afraid to post in here because the twice I have done so someone's rat has proceeded to die. Rats. I promise I won't do it again if it happens this time.

Anyway, I have a question. Me and my girlfriend have been rather bad rat owners for the last few weeks - we're both in our last few days of the last year of a law degree, stressed and studying far too much, and have not been spending anywhere near enough time with the poor things. I've been handling them and letting them out of the cage for at least a little while most nights, but I know it's not quite enough. I intend to make up for it and more - two days to go! - but I feel really bad :( anyway, my girlfriend went to clean the cage out yesterday, and spoke to them a bit to wake up them up first. Chimay was definitely awake and sticking her head out of the house to see us, was responding well to her voice and seemed pretty awake and inquisitive, so everything seemed fine. My girlfriend put her hand slowly into the cage, not looming over them, talking to them all the while, and Chimay immediately launched out of the house and bit her hard, holding on to her knuckle and managing to draw a fair amount of blood before being shaken off and going back to bed. I played with them later and they were absolutely fine.

So, basically, my question is - why would this have happened? She's not a biter and is great at being handled/played with/harassed and tickled mercilessly, she's always curious and happy to come out of the cage and see us, so she's certainly socialised well enough that I don't think she should be trying to bite us down to the bone. She bit me once when we hadn't had them long because I was retarded and decided that prodding them in their sleep seemed like a great idea, but has done nothing of the sort since them. As I said, she really seemed properly awake, but they're a little older now (about ten months, I think) and are maybe a bit less manic? Her sister wasn't awake, and I theorised that she might have been instinctively protecting her, but I have no idea, really.

Also I will post more pictures.
