Dynamo League Division Series Preview: Cleveland Unicorns vs. Burma Imperialists Vital Statistics Owner: IceMole Location: Cleveland, OH Home Grounds: Progressive Field Founded: (v1) Super-League I, (v2) Super-League III Record: 88-74, Sic Transit Vir Division Champions Runs Scored: 733 (4.52 per game) Runs Allowed: 641 (3.95 per game) All-Time Playoff Record: 8-8, 1 Series Win The Unicorns are tenacity personified. This is a team that is not only the last surviving team from its Expansion Cup Class, it's the last surviving team from any of the first three Expansion Cup classes. That's right, out of the forty or so teams that entered the Super-League in those three seasons, only the Unicorns are still standing. Is that because they're a particularly good team? Well, not really. If we're being honest, they've usually been competent, sometimes even fringe contenders, but they've never really been great. Part of that is because they've had the pleasure of spending the first six seasons of their existence locked in the same division as the Fukuoka Finger-Bangers, who just might be the greatest Super-League team in history. For obvious reasons, that's held them back quite a bit. While they made the playoffs in each of their first seasons (SL III and SL IV), they haven't been back since then, and while being the only team to ever defeat the Boston Skyhawks in a postseason series is a nice accomplishment, it does not do much to mask the grim reality that it's been over a year in real-life since they've made it this far. A win here would make all of that suffering seem somewhat more purposeful, as if they years of watching Marauder smack around the Unicorns was somehow leading to this moment. A loss would just mean that IceMole would shake his head, open up another beer, and wait for next season. After all, he's from Cleveland, he's used to this sort of poo poo. In terms of roster construction, the Unicorns have been running out essentially the same roster since Super-League III. A bunch of deadball pitchers led by Deacon Phillippe leads their rotation, which has usually been relatively decent, even if it has lost some of its luster over the past few seasons as teams have gotten a bit more sophisticated in handling deadball pitchers in general. On the offensive side of the ball, they're almost two different teams. On the one hand, you have the Bonds/McGwire/Evans section of the lineup, which is essentially the three true outcomes personified. On the other, you have the Wagner/Billy Herman/Clarke/Youngs side of the equation, which is all about contact hitting. It's still an open question about how well those two different approaches meld together although, as of late, IceMole has appeared to be favoring the sabermetric side of the lineup, as Dwight Evans will be starting in RF over Ross Youngs in this series. Vital Statistics Owner: Viscount Slim Location: Mandalay, Burma Home Grounds: Old Moulmein Pagoda Founded: Super-League V Record: 95-67, Memento Mori Champions Runs Scored: 770 (4.75 per game) Runs Allowed: 691 (4.26 per game) All-Time Playoff Record: 1-6, 0 Series Wins The Imperialists are always just a half-step away. Let's start with the positives. After last season, where the Imperialists slumped to a 75-87 record and had to survive essentially the entire Gauntlet in order to make it into Super-League IX, this season was a piece of cake. The Imperialists rather easily won their division this time around, with a rash of injuries striking the other teams in their division, and their pitching finally coming together in the most explosive way possible. That said, the Imperialists don't exactly have a great history of playoff success. The problem appears to be that while their pitching, for the most part, has been good, it usually has not been great, and its depth, which has been helpful in regular seasons past, does not mean as much when three starters are making almost all of the starts. This season, Joe Wood was dominant, but he also got to face a lot of bad lineups, and the Unicorns will not be as accommodating. As for the offense, the Imperialists have bunched a lot of good players (Bagwell, Mathews/Williams, Yount), a couple of great ones (Henderson, Collins), and some dregs (the disastrous catcher platoon), and hoped for the best. Obviously, this has not be a particularly good strategy, though it has served them well so far. Having so many holes on offense has led the Imperialists to heavily utilize platoons in their lineups, which has had mixed results, because there's just no way in heaven or earth that Danny Tartabull is going to be impressive under any circumstances ever. Not even when he was on Seinfield POSITIONAL BREAKDOWN! Catcher '10 Brian McCann (L) (CLU) (.270/.320/.424, 12 HR, 25 2B) '07 Russell Martin (R) (CLU) (.252/.352/.388, 2 HR, 6 2B) vs. '61 Johnny Roseboro (L) (BUR) (.230/.298/.337, 4 HR, 7 2B) '95 Sandy Alomar (R) (BUR) (.250/.293/.336, 1 HR, 5 2B) Two platoons, but only one of them has been even mildly productive. Granted, Johnny Roseboro hasn't had that much playing time, but he was never much of a bat anyway. EDGE: Unicorns First Baseman '90 Mark McGwire (R) (CLU) (.244/.350/.549, 48 HR, 25 2B) vs. '94 Jeff Bagwell (R) (BUR) (.263/.349/.441, 26 HR, 25 2B, 11 SB) Both have had roughly similar seasons except that McGwire hit 22 more home runs. Now, I'll be the first to admit that Jeff Bagwell is the better baserunner and fielder, but he'd have to be the Flash to make up the difference here. Given the way DC Comics is heading, there's a pretty good chance that in one of these reboots, they will make Jeff Bagwell the Flash, but until that happens, it's pretty clear who the winner is. Of course, if they did make Bagwell the Flash, they probably kill him off six months later and bring back Barry Allen. EDGE: Unicorns Second Baseman '34 Billy Herman (R) (CLU) (.295/.355/.447, 4 HR, 18 2B, 3 3B, 3 SB in 237 AB) vs. '11 Eddie Collins (L) (BUR) (.328/.380/.431, 2 HR, 29 2B, 10 3B, 23 SB) Billy Herman, who was an original member of the Skyhawks for those keeping track, has been very good in limited action. But those numbers are products of a small sample size and, even then, he's still only about as good as Collins, and given that Collins was better historically and in the Super-League, this is another obvious choice. EDGE: Imperialists Third Baseman '73 Darrell Evans (L) (CLU) (.254/.347/.455, 29 HR, 23 2B) vs. '54 Eddie Mathews (L) (BUR) (.232/.304/.398, 13 HR, 13 2B) '91 Matt Williams (R) (BUR) (.269/.298/.438, 12 HR, 14 2B) The Imperialists are trying to make the best of a bad situation by platooning Mathews and Williams, but it hasn't being going well. Mathews just hasn't been able to find a rhythm and Williams still can't draw a walk to save his life. Admittedly, Mathews should be performing better, but he hasn't been, and Evans has been solid all season. EDGE: Unicorns Shortstop '03 Honus Wagner (R) (CLU) (.298/.352/.385, 2 HR, 31 2B, 10 3B, 35 SB) vs. '75 Robin Yount (R) (BUR) (.320/.377/.464, 2 HR, 3 3B, 6 2B in 125 ABs) It's not clear who Viscount Slim is actually going to play in SS during the series. Yount is currently slotted in, but Alomar played there for most of the season. For the purposes of this preview, it's an academic post, as Wagner is better than either by a comfortable margin. To the extent that Yount is doing better at the moment, it's a statistical illusion as any owner who has used Yount will be able to tell you. EDGE: Unicorns Left Fielder '86 Barry Bonds (L) (CLU) (.239/.356/.420, 12 HR, 12 2B in 276 ABs) vs. '89 Rickey Henderson (R) (BUR) (.308/.398/.484, 19 HR, 36 2B, 61 SB) Now this is interesting. Bonds would eventually become the better player, but in 1986, Bonds was just a sprightly outfielder who was still over a decade away from chemically enhancing himself to a baseball demi-god. Even at this point, though, Bonds is a walk-drawing machine with mid-range power, and that's not nothing. On the other hand, Henderson had a fantastic season and is probably the better fielder than Bonds, who never did have much of an arm. EDGE: Imperialists Center Fielder '06 Ken Griffey, Jr. (L) (CLU) (.238/.296/.383, 10 HR, 2 2B) '24 Hack Wilson (R) (CLU) (.218/.282/.346, 9 HR, 19 2B) vs. '00 Jim Edmonds (L) (BUR) (.248/.320/.422, 13 HR, 19 2B) '80 Cesar Cedeno (R) (BUR) (.296/.356/.453, 9 HR, 27 2B, 17 SB) Battle of the platoons! Center field has been a week point for the Unicorns forever, and IceMole has...never done anything about that. Old Griffey and Young Hack just aren't really good enough to be much help for their team, as they aren't much defensively. The 19 home runs combined is nice, but it's still the least productive position for the Unicorns offense. The Edmoncs/Cedeno platoon hasn't been dominant, but it's been better. EDGE: Imperialists Right Fielder '75 Dwight Evans (R) (CLU) (.351/.520/.514, 1 HR, 3 2B in 37 ABs) vs. '08 Carlos Beltran (S) (BUR) (.251/.320/.462, 19 HR, 23 2B) '89 Danny Tartabull (R) (BUR) (.263/.337/.363, 1 HR, 5 2B) I don't really like either option here. Granted, since the Unicorns aren't going to start any lefties, Tartabull won't start any of these games, but I don't even like the theory of him being a starter under any circumstance. EDGE: Unicorns Bench '24 Frankie Frisch (S) (CLU) (.241/.278/.312, 4 HR, 23 2B, 17 SB) '07 Rafael Furcal (S) (CLU) (.221/.275/.305, 1 HR, 5 2B, 4 SB) '24 Ross Youngs (L) (CLU) (.260/.317/.345, 2 HR, 18 2B, 7 3B, 11 SB) '03 Fred Clarke (L) (CLU) (.312/.365/.412, 6 HR, 11 2B, 4 3B, 13 SB) vs. '97 Roberto Alomar (S) (BUR) (.261/.317/.388, 8 HR, 19 2B, 7 3B, 12 SB) '00 Placido Polanco (R) (BUR) (.195/.209/.235, 6 2B) All terrible, but Fred Clarke might be helpful as a defensive substitute, whereas Polanco is completely useless and Alomar will either be starting, and therefore moving Yount to this spot, or else be completely useless on the bench. EDGE: Unicorns SP1 '03 Deacon Phillippe (R) (CLU) (16-15, 3.54 ERA, 246.2 IP, 81 Ks) vs. '?? Hilton Smith (R) (BUR) (14-5, 2.32 ERA, 213.0 IP, 122 Ks) Combined, these two teams are going to send exactly one power pitcher to the mound in this series. That's really something. Anyway, these are the two nominal aces of each team, and both have been on these teams basically forever. Phillippe has probably been a bit better in the Super-League in past seasons, but Smith was a lot better this season. EDGE: Imperialists SP2 '03 Sam Leever (R) (CLU) (14-13, 3.28 ERA, 250.0 IP, 77 Ks) vs. '?? Martin Dihigo (R) (BUR) (20-5, 2.87 ERA, 210.0 IP, 100 Ks) On the plus side, the Unicorns have gotten their money's worth out of Sam Leever. 250 innings pitched? That's pretty impressive. Unfortunately, there's only nine innings in a playoff game, so marginally more endurance doesn't really make much of a difference, and Dihigo has been better in just about every other way. EDGE: Imperialists SP3 '71 Catfish Hunter (R) (CLU) (17-9, 3.27 ERA, 247.2 IP, 123 Ks) vs. '15 Joe Wood (R) (BUR) (21-6, 2.84 ERA, 228.1 IP, 210 Ks) Again, great job by the Unicorns getting the most out of Catfish. It's just that Wood had the best season of any pitcher in the Super-League this season. EDGE: Imperialists SP4 '10 Cy Young (R) (CLU) (7-7, 3.00 ERA, 129.0 IP, 44 Ks) vs. '37 Bob Feller (R) (BUR) (1-3, 3.20 ERA, 50.2 IP, 31 Ks) It's not clear that Feller will make a Game 4 start. First, because there might not be a Game 4, and second, because Viscount Slim might prefer Don Sutton for this spot. Oddly enough, the exact same thing is true for the Unicorns, who similarly have a Sutton waiting in the wings. As things stands though, I'll go with the old man over the teenager. EDGE: Unicorns Bullpen '07 Takashi Saito (R) (CLU) (2-6, 4.70 ERA, 51.2 IP, 32 Ks, 32 Svs) '07 Jonathan Broxton (R) (CLU) (4-1, 4.48 ERA, 70.1 IP, 69 Ks, 1 Sv) '07 Hong-Chih Kuo (L) (CLU) (4-6, 2.95 ERA, 73.1 IP, 59 Ks, 1 Sv) '01 Keith Foulke (R) (CLU) (4-3, 2.08 ERA, 39.0 IP, 40 Ks, 2 Svs) '24 Virgil Barnes (R) (CLU) (3-2, 3.81 ERA, 59.0 IP, 20 Ks, 2 Svs) '24 Art Nehf (L) (CLU) (3-3, 2.65 ERA, 68.0 IP, 19 Ks, 2 Svs) vs. '07 Jonathan Papelbon (R) (BUR) (8-5, 3.45 ERA, 70.1 IP, 71 Ks, 38 Svs) '77 Dennis Eckersley (R) (BUR) (4-6, 5.22 ERA, 60.1 IP, 33 Ks, 1 Sv) '00 Mike Timlin (R) (BUR) (1-4, 3.34 ERA, 62.0 IP, 27 Ks, 2 Svs) '75 Rawly Eastwick (R) (BUR) (0-0, 2.30 ERA, 31.1 IP, 13 Ks, 2 Svs) '66 Sam McDowell (L) (BUR) (3-2, 6.92 ERA, 67.2 IP, 72 Ks, 2 Svs) '19 Lefty Williams (L) (BUR) (1-1, 10.32 ERA, 11.1 IP, 7 Ks, 0 Svs) '70 Andy Messersmith (R) (BUR) (8-14, 4.34 ERA, 199.0 IP, 136 Ks) I hate both of these bullpens. EDGE: Whoever gets to face the winner in the next round In conclusion, who the hell knows who's going to win. The Imperialists have a better top of the rotation, the Unicorns' offense makes me want to die less. Also, if I told you who I thought was going to win, it would gently caress with the pick 'em. Tomorrow! I may or may not do this for the Mercuries/Cultists series. Unless someone does it for me, or I don't feel like doing it.

Hartnett had a good season, but Cochrane and Fisk had better ones, and while one could argue that is because they were platooned with each other, the fact is that they are still going to be platooned in this series, making that a non-issue. EDGE: Mercuries First Base '09 Albert Pujols (R) .289 / .364 / .490 with 25 HRs and 6 SBs vs. '88 Mike Greenwell (L) .289 / .332 / .416 with 10 HRs and 3 SB This isn't even a real discussion. Next season, when Yaz is healthy again and manning the spot for the Mercuries, it might be a more interesting question, though I'd probably lean the same way. Now, though? It's Pujols, the greatest hitter of this era, against Greenwell, who isn't even a real first baseman. EDGE: Cultists Second Base '30 Rogers Hornsby (R) .300 / .353 / .492 with 19 HRs and 7 SBs. vs. '49 Bobby Doerr (R) .246 / .289 / .365 with 12 HR and 0 SB Doerr definitely should have hit better. Of course, even if he had, Hornsby would have still been the superior hitter in all likelihood, but it would at least be closer. The case for Doerr involves him being a better fielder, but given the gap in offensive production, I can't see how that would work. EDGE: Cultists Third Base '64 Ron Santo .264 / .342 / .391 with 14 HRs and 1 SB vs. '88 Wade Boggs .293 / .356 / .396 with 4 HR and 1 SB Now this is a tough one. Boggs is a better hitter, but only marginally so, and Santo is the better fielder. Also, Santo has more power, and probably a bit more speed. More importantly, though, Santo was a Cub. EDGE: Cultists Shortstop '39 Arky Vaughan .296 / .353 / .417 with 7 HRs and 3 SBs vs. '49 Vern Stephens .254 / .293 / .366 with 10 HRs Not really much of a contest, really. EDGE: Cultists Left Field '64 Billy Williams .287 / .321 / .464 with 9 HRs and '35 Bob Johnson .254 / .318 / .435 with 8 HRs vs. '49 Ted Williams .319 / .416 / .554 with 34 HRs Gee, I wonder who is going to win this one? It's a real thinker... EDGE: Mercuries Center Field '11 Tris Speaker .312 / .366 / .432 with 5 HRs, 51 2Bs and 17 SBs vs. '49 Dom DiMaggio .283 / .336 / .376 with 4 HRs and 4 SBs Dom DiMaggio was a great fielder, probably the best fielding outfielder of his time. Of course, Speaker was one of the best fielders of his era too, and was a much, much better hitter, to the point where he still holds the career record for doubles. EDGE: Cultists Right Field '59 Stan Musial .280 / .336 / .440 with 11 HRs and '08 Carlos Beltran .258 / .315 / .386 with 2 HRs and 3SBs ( Beltran has a small sample size there) vs. '26 Kiki Cuyler .305 / .341 / .419 with 5 HRs and 5 SBs or '88 Dwight Evans .245 / .283 / .436 with 4 homers in a small sample size More platoons! Neither of them are exactly good platoons, of course, as apparently neither team felt any pressure at any point to actually find a good right fielder, figuring that they could just slot whatever spare outfielders they had lying around and hope for the best. I'll admit that this strategy has gotten them this far, but a team like the Landers or Rockford Losers could eat them alive. At any rate, I like the Cultists marginally better here. EDGE: Cultists Designated Hitter '99 Mike Pizza (R) .296 / .344 / .451 with 20 HRs vs. '69 Reggie Smith (S) .257 / .313 / .414 with 18 HRs and 3 SBs '88 Jim Rice (R) .246 / .292 / .408 with 7 HRs Reggie Smith was better than people remember, although no one remembers him, so I'm not sure how helpful a comment that is. The ghost of Jim Rice probably isn't going to be much help to anyone, though he did flash some power during the regular season. Even still, I'll go with the greatest hitting catcher in Major League history. EDGE: Cultists Pitching SP 1 '01 Christy Mathewson (R) (22-7, ERA 2.72 with 225.1 IP and 93Ks) vs. '88 Roger Clemens (R) (20-10, ERA 3.98, 244 IP, 207Ks) Control vs. Power! My usually inclination is to go with power, but, looking at the peripherals, Mathewson did have a better season, and also I don't want to deal with CthulhuDream's complaining if I picked Clemens here. EDGE: Cultists SP 2 '22 Walter Johnson (R) (14-6 with a 3.68 ERA, 220 IP and 117Ks) vs. '27 Lefty Grove (L) (15-9, ERA 3.59, 248.1 IP, 117 Ks) Two of the best pitchers. But Grove is a lot younger, and was a bit better during the regular season, and the Cultists seem a bit less threatening against a left-hander, if only because Johnson and Beltran aren't quite as good as Williams and Musial. EDGE: Mercuries SP 3 '11 Ray Collins (R) (20-7 ERA 3.24 225 IP 76 Ks) vs. '06 Justin Verlander (R) (6-3 ERA 4.37, 127.2 IP, 88Ks) I don't believe in Ray Collins EDGE: Mercuries SP 4 '78 Steve Carlton (L) (11-13 4.53 ERA, 224.1 IP, 134Ks) vs. '18 Joe Bush (R) (6-4, ERA 2.55 IP 74.0, 38Ks) I still think Carlton is a bit better than his stats, and don't like Bullet Joe's lack of power. It's a close one, probably closer than it should be, but... EDGE: Cultists Bullpen In collecting all of the stats for me, CthulhuDreams wrote about the bullpens that: "I cannot be bothered to assemble all the stats, but in short the Mercuries have a terrible bullpen, and the Cultists have one that is even worse" Well put. In summary, these teams aren't really that even. The Cultists are the definite favorites here, but the Mercuries have a decent chance of an upset.

Two Things! 1. Monathin appears to have vanished off the face of the Earth, and so I'm probably going to have someone else do the EC. It'll probably be CthulhuDreams or someone else in IRC, but if you want to throw your hat in the ring, pop in the channel, and we'll talk about it. 2. I'm going to need some help writing obits for teams. I know that mrnoun has volunteered to take some of the load, but if anyone else wants to help, I'd appreciate it.
