http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/1/4289794/boston-police-arrest-three-more-marathon-bombing-suspects And it sounds like they probably shouldn't have even mentioned the Boston Marathon in the first place, going by the latest updates. Edit: Ah, here we go. quote:Update 12:58pm EDT: The two suspects from Kazakhstan are reported to be college friends of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, according to the Associated Press. CBS Boston is reporting these two suspects' names to be "Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev", and goes on to say they will be charged with "conspiracy to obstruct justice and making false statements." The report does not provide the name of the third suspect, but goes on to say it is a male native to Massachusetts, who will be charged with making false statements. The actual names and charges have yet to be unsealed but when they are, we will update. -Dethstryk- fucked around with this message at 18:15 on May 1, 2013 |

They are saying that there is some kind of connection, so possibly they knew something about the bombing before or after the fact and then lied to the investigators when they were later questioned. Obstruction of justice charges, possibly e: Pete Williams: Suspects arrested in connection with Boston bombing case will be charged with lying to investigators Source: Two new suspects in Boston case were classmates of Tsarnaev who may have thrown away a knapsack at Tsarnaev's request- @Reuters Syllogism fucked around with this message at 18:18 on May 1, 2013 |

I think the most embarrassing thing would be if they did it because there was a bunch of obviously pirated music, movies and TV shows on it, and they were trying to dodge a million-dollar lawsuit. Something related to weed would be a pretty close 2nd.

Even if they did have links to buying weed or whatever, since that isn't in the scope of a presumable warrant, would they even be charged? e: I don't really fully understand how search warrants work besides that a judge finds enough probably cause to search for a specific thing related to a case.

If the obstruction occurs in connection with the trial of a federal criminal case, the defendant may be sentenced to either five years in prison, or the maximum sentence that could be imposed in the trial in which the obstruction occurred, whichever is greater. For example, if the obstruction occurs in connection with a drug trafficking case carrying a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, the person who obstructed justice might receive 20 years in prison for obstructing justice. If the person who obstructed justice was also the defendant in the drug trafficking case, the obstruction sentence might be added to the drug trafficking sentence, for a maximum possible sentence of 40 years in prison." https://www.ohiobar.org/forpublic/resources/lawyoucanuse/pages/lawyoucanuse-132.aspx Lol indeed.

According to the affidavit, all three were watching a movie at Tsarnaev's dormitory room (Tsarnaev wasn't there, his roommate was) when one of them noticed a backpack with the empty fireworks and then one of them realized that Tsarnaev was involved in the bombings. He then allegedly decided to get rid of the backpack in order to help their friend avoid trouble. He allegedly took the laptop because otherwise Tsarnaev's roommate would think that he was stealing or behaving suspiciously by just taking the backpack (????)

That affadavit is amazing. The guy explicitly tells the FBI he saw the fireworks, they led him to believe his friend was thus involved in the bombing, and then he took the bag away to help his friend stay out of trouble . . . . If a jury gets to hear all of that this guy is going away for a long time.

I even wonder what sort of massive prison sentence they could get for obstructing a federal level terrorism case given that even drug charges can get someone a 40 year prison sentence.

Federal and Terrorism have to be two completely different animals, but a couple years ago just over the border in NH this guy helped dispose of clothes, personal items and I believe weapons in a river after a home invasion murder: http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/news/952858-196/savoy-granted-parole-on-first-sentence-will.html I believe he was told the items were from a robbery when he actually tossed them in the river but the next day he connected them to news stories of the murder, but didn't turn his friends in based on his suspicions. I think all together he'll do 5 years. I can't imagine these guys will get life, even if the courts can impose that sentence. E: Just read one of them was the terrorista license plate guy. Maybe they will get life if they can't stay out of their own way on their train of stupidity.
