There's a fixed set of portcrystals on Bitterblack Isle, so you should be able to warp back to there. However, if you mean warp from inside the island, you need to use a lift stone, not a ferrystone. Ferrystones don't work within BBI.

I've found two shortcuts so far, they aren't great but you can access them from the "beach" area. And as was said, you can use a liftstone to make it back to the entrance, but you can't warp any farther in.

You will be able to unlock the first room with a shortcut in it after you find the void key. I think the key was in the same area as the giant ogre, so you should be close. Shortcut doors will be green like the regular ones, but they say 'leave' instead of 'enter'.

Oh, yeah, two shortcuts will open up as you progress through. Both of them are after the first two "main" bosses, which get unskippable cutscenes. You'll know where they are when you find them, they're pretty distinct.

Putting one around the Dragonforged's place isn't a bad idea. Putting one on the cliff exiting Witchwood is a cool place, too. One in front of Shadowfort, Bluemoon Tower, or Great Wall are also good choices.
Other nice places to drop port crystals are some of the escort mission locations, including Bloodwater Beach, the Healing Spring by the Blighted Manse, and Prayer Falls. That way you can instantly complete those missions, and yeah, ferrystones work with escorts.

Yes. The only times it connects are when downloading pawns in the background, and uploading/downloading pawn use when you sleep at an inn. If your internet is lovely, you just won't see the random pawns hanging out in the world unless you stand still long enough for the game to download their info (you can still hire pawns from the Rift itself reliably). You do need a XBL Silver account, which is free, though.

This isn't possible. It's probably someone who left the game world so you can't tell if they're gone or not. If you mean you didnt get the ring dropping from the sky cutscene, that just means your beloved wasn't the person you gave the ring to.

Just picked this up, and it's great, but I have a few questions.

What's the best way to level up Vocations? I was digging the standard Sword n' Board Fighter, but I switched over to Warrior because Clout looks super great. Now I'm just trying to burn through those last three levels as quickly as possible. Does it run on just any EXP, or just kills?

What is the point of giving gifts to people? I get that that makes them like me, but what does that do? Is there a tangible benefit, or is it just for be bros with townsfolk?

You level up vocations with discipline, which is earned as a percentage of experience on a sliding scale. Someone will come along and post the actual percentages, but you get a lot more discipline per experience point from kill worth less than 100 xp, and you get a single digit percentage from kills over 1000. If you're in the post game, a fun exploit is to aggro the guards near the castle and then run through the gate behind Fournival's house. Then stand on the wall above the stairs leading downwards. The guards won't be able to reach you. Let your pawns (this is great with sorcerer pawns) murder the mob as they keep spawning indefinitely and just wait as your vocations finish themselves!

Gifts to people in the game world (as opposed to pawns and players) are a way of raising affinity, which is the game's way of tracking who is in love with you. This will come up later.

I find leveling vocations is best done fighting stuff like bandits, goblins, saurians, undead, harpies, etc-since you earn a percentage of DP from the Exp, even though it's less, you get a higher percentage from the lesser XP. There's a chart somewhere in the last few pages that details how many XP/DEP you get.

It asked me at the start whether I wanted online mode or not, and I said yes. I was able to rate pawns and such before.

I don't think I'd be able to hire other people's pawns in the first place if I wasn't in online mode, the problem is when I get back to the rift, and I dismiss them, they just leave. No popup for gifting and rating at all.

Discipline points run on exp, there is a way the game calculates how much you get based on the amount of experience you get from a kill or quest (I think quests count as well). Just keep playing and you will level up vocations, the higher levels may take a while. You gain a higher percentage of DP from things that give you less than 100 exp, so killing lots of smaller things might be quicker, however I don't know if that's really the fastest way to level because I think you can kill one cyclops quicker than 30 goblins and the net sum of DP might still be higher.

Similar to a guy a few pages ago I just started a new game on a different gamer profile (I wanted to use a female pawn to that'll hopefully get hired more often). I haven't received the rift crystals bonus yet though, do you get this later or will you only receive it on the profile you had a preexisting save on? I suppose I could hire this pawn on my other profile and transfer some..

Dragon's maw continues to be my most favorite skill in the game for its simplicity yet results.

Surprisingly, the hardest enemies for me were liches because they never come down low enough for skyward slashes. The purple phantasms take ages to kill as well even with a magical weapon. I just skip both at this point.

There are a certain number of pawns built into the game. You can recognize those by the lack of any sort of icon by their names when you talk to them and the blank creator information in their status screens. If you're sure they're actually other people's pawns, you still can't rate or gift things to vanilla DD pawns in Dark Arisen. Those have an icon like a package with a red X through it.

This game can sometimes be awful, but then some stupid thing happens and I love it again:
1) I tried to jump down from a cliff and I knew I wouldn't die from the fall damage, but I've jumped on an edge of an other cliff face, rolled down from it and died anyway
2) I've thrown a boar to my pawn, who caught him and threw him at my other pawn, who didn't caught it
3) In the bandit fort, the chief said something about me lacking mettle. Knowing that the word means something like "guts", I've tried to carry him around and throw him down from a cliff, making him recognize my manliness. When that didn't work, I've carried him around and started throwing him at the other bandits, who then individually attacked my pawns and died. When that didn't help I've given him some things and he gave me the scroll in return :downs:

I'd really like for the upgraded gear in the shop to have some bearing on the "equipped/have" notifications, since it's cumbersome to check manually. Also, does resolving a quest differently change what quests I'd be able to undertake later? I know that rewards vary, but I just care about quests now, this first playthrough will mostly end up being a practice run anyway.

As long as you don't get a FAILURE mark on a quest you can't be locked out of future quests, with the sole exception of one of Fournival's two quests being able to lock you out of the other one.

I could hire your pawn and get you a few RC. Only things you can really do on your own are the From A Different Sky quests (800-2,400 RC for each of the 100 tokens) or just kill more things in BBI.
