That being said, when I first got Bailey, when I mentioned having trouble with loose lead walking, people outside of PI suggested I get a prong or a choke collar. PI suggested that I first try a harness, which I've been using with him ever since. I don't think I could go back to not using a harness- it feels so much more secure for both me and the dog.

See, that's the nice thing about having a little dog. I just drag him along by the collar, and he's too small to stop me from doing it! :haw:

This article is pretty silly. Bad training is bad training. Badly trained dogs learn bad behaviors (or don't unlearn them or don't learn appropriate behaviors). Well trained dogs are well behaved. That's pretty much all there is to it. I'd bet money that problem behaviors that get dogs euth'd are not the result of +R/-P but of no training or just plain bad training.

That said, I'm not too keen on "Aversive Free" training myself and my training certainly isn't aversive free. "AF" often translates to bad training because it's usually the result of not fully understanding how training works.

Also good dog Griff! :3:

Sometimes I feel like this.

My husband says the rat situation is not as bad as it sounded, and he's going to talk to my house sitter about how he needs to be more social with the rats. They're moving his computer down into the room where the cage is so they can see and hear him more. Apparently he was just being very wimpy about picking them up if they squeaked, and since Mordin likes to scream like he's being murdered (until you put him on your shoulder, then he's perfectly content), the house sitter thought he might be hurting them.

I'm still cautiously optimistic, but it sounds like maybe I don't need to find a foster or new home for them. :ohdear:

I think it really depends a lot on the dog, too. Shadow is a sensitive flower who does much better without aversives (though it's also important to note, of course, that it's up to the dog what he/she considers aversive). Even if I use a no-reward marker in a happy tone Shadow's world will crumble and he will think he is The Worst Dog and spiral into a tornado of terrified appeasement gestures (I am exaggerating a bit, of course, but that's pretty much what happens, esp if he knows I'm getting frustrated). It is Very Important to him that he pleases me, but with dogs who are less sensitive about that I can understand using things like verbal corrections. I used to use them with him before he had bonded to me and he was fine (and he still is in certain situations), but he tends to find them much more aversive now.

I just wanted to ramble on.

I have a couple questions for you guys... Refurb's getting kinda fat. The vet warned me that might happen, since she can't exercise as much as normal cats. I get her to chase the laser pointer sometimes but she doesn't really chase it too much before she gets tired and prefers to play with her non-moving toys that she doesn't have to run after.

What's the best way to keep her from getting too fat? She's only a bit pudgy but I want to keep her weight in check early. Do I just feed her less each meal?

Second question: how long should I keep feeding her kitten food before switching her to adult? I completely forgot to ask my vet, but maybe you guys can ballpark it for me... a year old? Sooner?

If she's getting fat it's probably time to switch from kitten food. Weigh weekly, adjust food in SMALL increments to shift weight. Just be sensible and practical about it, it's not rocket science. Good luck and sorry about your fat cat.

Lola is incredibly sensitive too. No reward markers during training slowly make her reluctant to offer behaviours, but a quick verbal correction has never caused a problem. For example: we were walking yesterday, she looked down to sniff (and probably eat) some food, I quietly said 'ah, ah' and she carried on walking instead, which got her praise. Usually she just walks past food without looking at it.
