Could at least flip one or two, maybe.
You'll have to download and update the NAM installation, but otherwise you ought to be good.

Ugh, how the hell do I even install any of these mods? I got the Old Fashioned pack and it came with a million folders with absolutely no instructions.

I know they're supposed to go into "C:\Documents and Settings\Greg\My Documents\SimCity 4\Plugins" but... how? What folders do I keep them in? Are the mods applied automatically?

Just put them into the Plugins folder however. You can use any subfolders you want to keep it organised.
Yes they are automatically loaded and used just by being there.

One thing to keep an eye out for: The mods are (supposedly) loaded in alphabetical order, and there are a few components, in particular from NAM and CAM, that must be loaded before or after everything else. Those are typically given odd names that will force them to sort first or last, make sure nothing else comes before/after those.

I think the dependencies.dat files included in the goon gigapack are broken or something, because having them in my plugin folder caused the game to hang at a black screen when I tried running it. I deleted them and got the dependency compilation pack instead and now it seems to work fine. This won't cause any problems with the other mods will it?

I (the person who made the dependency compilation) am not sure of what actual dependencies are in the old gigapack's dependency file, so I can't say for sure, but replacing it won't effect other mods. If no brown boxes or other graphic errors appear on buildings, then you're all set. I'd personally stay away from the gigapack though, since it's quite outdated.

I bought this for myself and friends because of the hilarity of the Simcity (2013) thread, but I can't get the Fhuzo map working. (the cool looking one that uses Old-Fashioned). I have Old-Fashioned installed, Fhuzo is placed in my Regions folder, but it's not detecting it in-game.

e: did a more thorough reading and found the other Region folder :downs:

Is it in Regions folder that is in My Documents? Because there is Regions folder where the game is installed, but the game reads only the one in My Documents.

The game is just loading the files. It can take several minutes to do it. In fact I remember the gigapack taking about 5-10 minutes to load the first time. I would beware that you may not have all of the dependencies now.

With that said, there have been other plugin mega packs posted in this thread that are likely way better and more up to date.

You have to go into every single tile in the region and save to get rid of the neon colors in the region view.

So, I was wondering if someone could help me out with building a "not grid" city.

Basically what I've been doing is running a big avenue through the middle of my region, then doing diagonal roads off that. Off of those diagonal roads, I do some winding streets that I put low density residential zones.

This is working alright in making things not a rigid grid, but I'm basically just randomly drawing roads. I don't really have a plan, I'm not even sure what my plan should be.

Try to build the city organically, so start at a place a city would form, like a railroad/highway crossing, the mouth of a river, near a hillstream, something like that. Start small with a roughly circular center of town, then build outwards using the contours of natural features/large infrastructure as your guide. If parts of your town are gridlike it does not matter, as long as the overall shape is not a square!

Mixing zones helps a lot, city centers should have a mix of commercial and residential. Putting services in logical real world places instead of the optimal simcity placement also helps, like a large hospital on the border of a city center, and only small precincts in residential areas.

Another idea is to just look at Google maps for examples of the kind of cities you want to make. An old, major metropolis? Look at how NYC formed starting from the southern tip of Manhattan then progressed northward. Industrial city? Look at Pittsburgh's industrial centers around rivers and the residential areas where the workers settled. Boomtown? Take a look at Las Vegas's depressing grid that stretches to the desert then disappears. These are all American examples, of course, and much more modern cities than say Paris or London, but unfortunately SimCity 4's grid system doesn't lend well to European streets.

Small details help with the character too. For example, Broadway in NYC is a long, diagonal street that cuts through the grid because it used to be a Native American trail that led from the Southern part of the island to the North. Throwing a grid down in the later parts of your city is fine and will look like a real city, because eventually these places got too big to build organic streets. They said "gently caress it, put a grid down" because it's the best layout for cars. Most grids, however, have something to interrupt them, be it parks or diagonals or traffic circles, etc.

When you download them, they usually are labeled grow or plop (or growable/ploppable). Landmark too. The packs are all going to be mixed, but you might be able to search for plop and landmark and take out those files or something.

OK, so this is embarrassing but I'm going to post some city shots. I'm terrible at names but they will have to do.

I decided to load up Fhuzo with the Oldfashioned pack and went to work. Now I've gone down the rabbit hole a bit further and download shitloads of customs I expect my city will change over time. Anyway, on with the show!

So this was just starting out. This was before I thought too much about how I wanted it to look. I had a basic idea of cities near coastal and river regions with the main industry in the mouth of the river where it would be protected from the elements and would potentially have a large port.

As you can see from the tile I decided would be my urban center I built up instead out out. Yuk. No natural growth or sweeping farms or terrible urban sprawl. Just shapely downtown.

At least the god-fearing sims also appreciate a good mural.

Yeah, I don't really "get" interchanges yet. I have so many terrible roads and railways I'm going to have to fix.

Okay, let's try this again. On a new tile I built up the farms and a bit of a town center based around the water tower/rural shipping hub.

It even looks quite nice!

I managed to get some pics after expanding up the river and working on my first tiles to build them out. Here's an overview.

Note the Grand Fromage influence of placing the baseball stadium in the shittiest part of town.

An attempt to get some urban sprawl going. I wanted to make sure there were a few curves and empty spaces around for when the population starts growing.

The best part about blending Grand Fromage and Oldfashioned is the mix of surprises. Santa!!

I wish I could build like some of you guys. I'm definitely going to work on a rail network while I'm home this break. I just kept dragging track around, not planning or making any sense, I just tried to bulldoze as little housing and commercial as possible. I'm realizing now that you have to build out the train lines before expanding the housing and commercial because a train line is what makes that possible in the real world.

Check traffic noise. Rich people loving hate living on noisy streets. Don't expect rich folks to live near a major artery. This is also where city planning comes into play, as you need to ensure that a lot of people aren't driving past rich people buildings. If the road they live on is noisy they won't live there no matter how many services the locale has.

Demolish the reduced wealth buildings and put down services. It's better than dealing with vastly reduced demand in an area.

When starting a new city zoom out all the way and use ploppable trees to draw out your trunk roads. Then just follow that path of trees with the road tool. That should give you a nice organic layout.

I don't know the answer to this but regarding the HT-i fix and other stuff like it you have to use sc4datpacker to combine the original Simcity_1.dat and the fixes into one .dat file, then replace the original with the file you have just created.

Take note that you need to register for sc4devotion.com to download sc4datpacker.

Urrrrrrggghhhh.

I just started playing so I can't tell you if the whole process has worked or not, but the game is not crashing.

I'm guessing that the pack doesn't contain the modified file but if it contains the HT-i fix then it probably doesn't work right until you do all of this.

It includes the space center and opera house fixes. It doesn't include the HT-I fix because of economic negligence on my part.

For the record, I'm working on Old Fashioned 3.0. It will include the HT-I fix along with the new stable NAM and a few buildings. But mostly I'm trying to organize the file system so that it's comprehensible.

Strangely enough, the last time it didn't work, I had dat-packed in the high-tech jobs fix with something from CAM and Simcity_1.dat but this time I didn't. So while there's double-demand in certain areas thanks to both CAM and the high-tech jobs fix, at least it runs. :)

I have NAM, CAM, SPAM, RTMT, fixes like the opera house, schools, and space port, some HD terrain mods, and random poo poo like the plasma gasification plant I posted about on page one.
