In Nocturne, does it matter how many characters are in my party? As in, does the exp get split between my party, or do they all get the same amount? (didn't they do this in persona 3 or 4? That's the only reason I'm asking, I hope it was a thing that happened and I'm not just being crazy).

That's the phase of Kagutsuchi, the giant floating ball of light at the center of the Vortex World. It works like the Moon Phase system does in other SMT games.

It affects various things.

To quote a guide for the Japanese release of the game:

quote:

In any case, one of the defining characteristics of this new world is
Kagutsuchi. Kagutsuchi is the moon that exists in the dead center of the Vortex
World, constantly emitting pulses of light. Its function is pretty much the same
as that of the moon in previous SMT games. It goes through 8 separate phases,
but instead of dictating the shape of the moon, the phases indicate the light
output of Kagutsuchi within its pulses. It goes from Full (8/8) at the apex of
its pulse when it is giving out the most light, to Silent (0/8) when it's not
giving out any light at all. There are no waxing and waning phases like earlier
SMT games, but for all intents and purposes Full is like the Full Moon of
earlier games, and Silent is like the New Moon of earlier games. As you move
around, the phase of Kagutsuchi slowly changes from 0/8 to 8/8 and back again.
Kagutsuchi will NOT change phase if you sit still--you must move in order for it
to change. Also, the speed at which it changes phase varies depending on where
you are--it changes phase much more quickly on the overhead map (since you're
traveling a greater distance)

Moon phase has several effects on gameplay. First and foremost is its effect on
combat. The brighter the moon, the more ancy the demons get. They will be more
likely to respond to negotiations and less likely to attack during the darker
moon phases, and more rough and violent during the higher phases. During a Full
Moon, the excessive light from Kagutsuchi more or less drives them nuts and they
act drunk. In addition, the brighter the moon, the tougher the demons will be.
They will do more damage and take less during the brighter phases, though the
difference is very slight. You can really feel the difference though during some
boss battles, for example. Some demons will act differently in the way they
conduct combat during different moon phases as well.

Second, moon phases have a huge influence on Magic Boxes. There are two types of
treasure chests in SMT3--regular treasure boxes, which look like hovering red
cubes, and Magic Boxes, which look like small chests on the ground. The content
of Magic Boxes varies by the moon phase. It can either contain a good treasure,
or a lousy treasure of a Maseki or two. The closer the moon phase is to Full,
the better the chance you will get the treasure instead of a Maseki. During a
Full Kagutsuchi, the chance of you getting the treasure from a Magic Box will be
100%. During a New Kagutsuchi, the chance of you getting the treasure is 0%--in
other words, it wil ALWAYS give you Maseki during a new moon.

Lastly, there are a few story-based events that rely on moon phase--either
optional events that will only take place during specific phases (there will
always be someone around to give you a hint in this case) or events that take
place after a certain period of time, marked by the number of moon phases that
have passed.

Some more detail should be added on demon negotiation differences in Full phase. Demons will respond to you as if they're drunk, but there's a pretty decent chance that they'll ask a single question of you. If you answer that question the way they like, they'll join without you having to go through the normal process of bribing them with money and items. It is worth it to try and talk to demons on the full moon because of this.

Does the Moon Phase thing in SMT2 still work the same way for Magic Boxes like in Nocturne? I've tried opening multiple ones in the Full Moon, and got nothing.

I'm pretty sure in SMT2 each magic box only contains a gem on a specific moon phase, and the moon phase you have to open it on depends on what gem it can contain. Of course, since you don't know what gem it can contain until you've successfully got the gem, it's pretty much a guessing game.

How's P3FES' The Answer, story wise? Replaying the game for the nth time and playing with cheats because I really just want to see the story again, and I'm thinking if The Answer is worth it. Never played it, and I do kind of remember reading the epilogue isn't very good at all story wise.

The Answer's story is very front- and end-loaded. There's some stuff between dungeon doors, but as best as I can remember it's not a lot. I personally really like it as it's some really good closure for Aigis, but I had a really tough time getting through it because it's all dungeon. There's no schoolin' to break that up, and it wore on me pretty quickly. If you're using cheats, though, then you should be able to finish the Answer in maybe six or seven hours.

Also, Fuuka's voice actor shapes up big time for The Answer.

I liked The Answer a lot more than most people around here but agree that the pacing was off.

The constant dungeon crawling gets a bit wearying by the end, but I found the boss fights really good because they arent more cases of "fight three identical shadows" but are actually mixed groups with varied abilities that work together.

And while Metis is a dubious character plotwise, drat, she tears poo poo up.

I'd give The Answer a shot but if you start burning out just drop it and youtube the rest.

Oh, I forgot to mention, once you re-acquire Junpei, never let him out of your party. They readjusted his skillset in The Answer, and as a result he is practically unkillable. On top of that, I swear he has like 4x the crit rate of any other character, and consistently outpaced everyone, including Aigis with 20+ levels over him, in damage because of it.

I remember always rolling a team of Aigis, Metis, Ken, and Koromaru simply because the team had no real elemental weaknesses (and I remember a lot of bosses in the Answer were really big on elements).

I didn't have as much of a problem with weaknesses. I don't know if they increased the persona item chance probability or if I was just lucky, but I was able to get the null element equipment without too much difficulty. But yeah, you do need to pay more attention to elements in the Answer. Makarakarn helps out a lot once you can get it. For some reason some of the boss shadows are either not immune or actually weak to some of their own attacks.

I'm towards the end, thinking I'm in good shape. MC and Nemissa are in their mid-60s, both fully decked out in all of the Casino gear.

Aw man, I didn't remember the ending was this good. Definitely one of the best ones I've experienced ever in a game, it just gives you this immense warm feeling. I can't play the Answer now, it just simply needs to end here, it's perfect like this :v:

Maybe I'll do it later this summer. Or on Finnish high school's graduation day, which I think is the first of June. Should be pretty fitting.

I really want to play Persona 4 right away, to finally come to the decision if I liked it or P3 more. Both have their different pros and cons, and both are in my books perfect tens. But due to the very similar gameplay, I should probably play something different in between.

I'm playing persona 3 portable again myself. Plan on playing persona 4 golden right after. Honest, I love both 3 and 4 pretty equally. Both are easily the best JRPGs in a long long while.

It will be my first time playing Golden, maybe that will push 4 ahead of 3 for me. But, as it stands now, both get equal love from me.

P3 and P4 have their problems, but preference really comes down to which style you like more. I love them both, but I prefer the darker style of P3 to the chipper style of P4. Though it may be the "waifu-tastic" fanbase kind of ruined the experience of P4 for me, but it's still an amazing game.

Yeah, P3 is darker and a bit more standard save the world in an epic way story, while P4 is the happiest game about murders ever, and an absolutely phenomenal murder mystery story. Even though I usually prefer more darker stuff, I loving love a good murder mystery, so I may just have to lean towards P4. The gameplay is, obviously, also better.

P4(G) -> P3P is fine, the problem is when you try to do P4(G) -> P3:FES.
