So I have a good buddy who happens to be in a band, Westward the Tide, they're pretty popular locally and I feel like they make some pretty good Folk/Indie music. You can find their EP here: http://westwardthetide.bandcamp.com/ I'd suggest starting with "Streetlights" or "Everything Is." All the songs are really good though.

I really like this album and have listened to it many times already. It's been getting stellar reviews too, I bet it'll make some 'album of the year' lists. Oh and if you've heard Patti Smith's "Horses" you should really listen to the track "Husbands".

One person talked about it a few pages ago, but Pedestrian Verse by Frightened Rabbit is amazingly good. I thought winter of mixed drink was utter garbage after an amazing breakout album. This album completely redeems them and it's what I loved about the sound: The woodpile https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KY4j8Ow-CTs Non-single track "Holy" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a132IodTPDY incoherent fucked around with this message at 09:58 on May 6, 2013 |

So MS MR has their first LP, Secondhand Rapture, coming out next week but they've put up a full streaming version of it right here: http://hypem.com/premiere/MS%20MR I think it's pretty fantastic, "Twenty Seven" and "BTSK" in particular. I've posted about them before in here but they've basically got a darker, richer Florence and the Machine sound. Can't wait to see them again at the end of the month.

Or maybe my view of folk rock is just too narrow. Anyway I'm disappointed I've never seen 'em. I live in Mississippi and we have a pretty good track record for our good homegrown bands making lots of rounds around the hotspots of Mississippi before making it big, but I hadn't even heard of them until they did indeed hit it "big."

I've been listening to Everything Everything's new album Arc. I've known of them for a while now, having found their first album Man Alive in 2011. It's excellent, though they have a rather schizophrenic sound and the lead vocalist has a voice that needs some getting used to due to the wild ways he contorts himself. I'd say the most accessible song they have made so far is Duet. Give their library a listen.

My favourite British indie band, The Indelicates, just released their fourth album, Diseases of England. The first single, Class, was released late last year, and they've released another handful since. I haven't listened to it enough to be able to tell if it's as good as their previous albums, but I've really enjoyed it so far. cptn_dr fucked around with this message at 07:23 on May 8, 2013 |

Eh, glancing over it it seems a bit dated in how the "indie" thing is presented. I think its a good analysis of how things worked a few years ago, but the internet worked so differently when Funeral or Clap Your Hands Say Yeah were released. I mean, there's no serious discussion in this thesis of or services like Pandora, Spotify, and Last.fm, or even Youtube and Tumblr. I honestly find that Pitchfork has grown up a lot in the past 5-7 years; the scoring system is more or less standardized and most of the problematic writers that gave the site its reputation have moved on to other things. I remember when pretentious was the word-du-jour for their reviews, but now I think the signifiers that are associated with that word show up much more frequently in articles published on Tiny Mix Tapes or The Quietus. Plus Pitchfork has had some real innovative presentations for their feature articles, the recent piece on Savages was really impressive.

She & Him quietly put out their new record, Volume 3, this week. Zooey's got a history of writing albums that are mostly filler with one or two really good songs, and this is another. Check out "Somebody Sweet To Talk To" or "I've Got Your Number, Son". There's also a pretty good cover of Blondie's "Sunday Girl", the version that's half in French.

Any GASHCAT (http://gashcat.bandcamp.com/) fans here? They popped up on one of my Pandora playlists a while ago and I've since fallen in love. Pandora hasn't renewed the license to play their music and they don't appear to be on Spotify or Rdio. In other words, they're completely underrated and relatively unknown and they don't deserve to be. They sound a lot like Neutral Milk Hotel. No, it's not quite original, but if you're looking for an NMH-like fix then here you go. I just saw James Blake tonight in Carrboro and it was quite an experience. He somehow fits all the nuance and atmosphere into his live performances, and his voice is superb. When he played Limit to Your Love, he sorta let it drag on for a few minutes and it got reeeeeal sticky and dubby and grimey and it was just brilliant. Heads-up: I've recently been obsessed with a singer-songwriter named Angel Olsen. She mostly does acoustic-vocal-bass work and it's just gorgeous. She has this wavering, soaring voice that's difficult to compare to anyone else - "a female Will Oldham" is the best I can come with. http://youtu.be/5v5t4Lxp5VQ http://youtu.be/SY-wOA7MTZY Angel Olsen will be in Brooklyn this Sunday.

The new album from Kisses, Kids in LA, was released yesterday. They clearly have some massive 1980s pop influences, but still sound new. The Hardest Part is probably most representative of their sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HO9KZQRZ0H8 Their first album The Heart of the Nightlife was also pretty great if you haven't heard it. I'm going to assume this is the right thread... New Primal Scream album is out and it's their best and most conceptually cohesive work in about 11 years. I just received the deluxe bundle in the mail and the vinyl is beautifully packaged. Really glad the band is back in good form after two somewhat middling efforts. XTRMNTR was my absolute favourite album of last decade, Vanishing Point in my top 10 of the 90s and Evil Heat rounds out that amazing trilogy.

The band Beach Fossils just posted, and deleted about ten minutes later, this amazing gem of indie rock absurdity. quote:Music journalism/criticism is for college kids who just discovered there is more to music than Top 40 and need somebody to hold their hand when it comes to forming an opinion. "Baa!" says the sheep. Wake up or get out! The critic has an enormous and comfortable space to rot away behind the computer screen while the artist works their fingers to the bone, traveling the world for a decent and honest living. Don't follow the herd. Either get a lobotomy and become one with the masses or believe in what you love and think for yourself. This to me was too funny/ridiculous to not post it. The best part is the fact they deleted it like some E/N bullshit within ten minutes. Classic.
