So I just picked this game up a few days ago, and I'm really digging the combat system, but I have a problem. I can't seem to do much damage to anything on any of the quests I have. The Ogres take no damage even when my whole party hits them for a solid 5 minutes and can instakill us in about a second flat. Cyclops and griffons are manageable but take forever, and bandits take me a few tries a piece per encounter since they can generally one shot everyone but me then just gang up on me, even with much higher level pawns. On top of that, the escort missions seem literally impossible, since the person dies in one hit and charges head first into enemies. I lost the merchant a while back and now I'm stuck with Mercedes. I really want to like this game, but there doesn't seem to be any areas where I can do anything, even with the latest skills and weapons.

Basically, am I missing something or is this game just incredibly hard? It took me about 3 days to figure out how to kill the fish guys, but now they're easy, is it all like that? If so, what are these tricks?
You're not supposed to be able to beat every enemy you encounter, plain and simple. You're supposed to cut and run sometimes (while literally carrying your escort client if need be). It goes completely against modern game design theory and I love it.

If you played FF13, when you first arrive on Gran Pulse, that's the kind of feeling it has, there are various strengths of monsters just scattered around willy-nilly and though you can only beat a small fraction of them to start, eventually you'll be able to beat them all and feel like the king of the world. That was the only part of FF13 I liked.

So are the quests like "Clear out the mines" meant for much later in the game? There's like 4 ogres in there and I can't scratch one.

I am not an egghead. I am well-read.
How much rift crystals does it take to purify items on Bitterblack Isle? My character is in her mid 50s and I have a grand total of 62k crystals or so. My pawn has been hired a grand total of once, ever, netting me about 18k. Everything else has either been loot drops from monsters, or doing about 20 or so of the 'From A Different Sky' board quests. I'm guessing this is a pittance when it comes to purifying items.

I think you need to abandon the idea that the side-quests are "meant" for any particular level. When you can do them, you can do them. Some of them I got at the very beginning of the game stayed in my quest list until basically the end.

edit: ogres are kind of a special case, they are a ridiculous ball of hit points that will take forever to beat until well into the game.

I did the quarry quest way before I should have, and it took me a long time and many healing/stamina items. You have access to quests way earlier on than is reasonable to complete them. It is worth noting, though, that ogres actively target females; my Arisen is male and I brought all female pawns with me. They got their asses handed to them but it took most of the heat off me. Having a mage with the healing spell has been pretty much mandatory for me as well. As for escort quests, if you have a port crystal you can work your way to the destination and place one where you need to go before you accept the quest. That way you can go back to Gran Soren, initiate the quest, and then just zap yourself there with a ferry stone.

Do I lose anything if Mercedes and the merchant, Reynard I think, are dead? I lost the merchant a while back, and I have the Mercedes quest right now but she can't survive taking 3 steps out of town. I also failed a quest about stalking a guy a while back after I got arrested, do I lose anything major there?

NPC death is temporary, they stay dead a week and then come back. However I think it invalidates any quest line that they may have had. Mercedes definitely has one but Raynard doesn't I think.

edit: Oh wait, thinking about it again, Mercedes' next quest is pretty major and maybe isn't invalidated by you failing that quest. She just won't like you as much and that influences the ending of the game (i.e. someone else will appear in a key scene rather than her).

Alright, so I picked up Dark Arisen not too long ago and have been really enjoying it, even to the point of obsessively sidequesting. I haven't really tried any of them yet, but why do only a couple of the escort quests appear on the Gran Soren Inn notice board? I've looked all around and haven't been able to find anything conclusive.

If it helps, the most recent main quest I did was A Matter of Myrmidons.

Also Raynard has like two escort quests and he's also part of a long quest chain that slowly unlocks more of his inventory. And you need him to acquit Fournival. Well, you don't NEED him, but it's easier with his help.

You should be fighting as little as possible in escort quests. The griffin landing on your escortee thing is funny and all but it should never actually happen. Don't carry them, just run past everything. They'll regularly teleport to keep up with you. Doing trips to bloodwater beach I would regularly sprint past the drake and about fifty goblins and the idea of my escortee taking even a single hit was almost completely out of the question. It just doesn't happen if you keep moving. Maybe bring along some of those mushrooms you've been stockpiling and shove them into your face as you run to keep your stamina up.

I've been using a tank called Gwen for a week, she was my favorite. Just now she decided to fall off a a wall into the deep deep depths of BI. No problem, I'll just go back to the rift crystal and get her back. She was not in the rift, not on my recent list and looking at the google doc.... NOT A GOON!

Who was she? How can I find her? Will I ever be complete without her? I'm genuinely gutted! On PS3

All the goons who have been taking Auri out, I hope she's being a good wizard.

Also on the escort quest, you can go to the place they need you to be ahead of time and leave a portcrystal in that area. That way when you take on the mission you can just warp there without having to risk failing the mission.

That's my pawn - she's Lady Smash! now. Her skin is green, and she's taking some time as a ranger while I get my own fighter augments. Glad she was helpful! She'll be back as a fighter soon.

Also, I've used Auri a couple of times - even though she's a lower level, she did good work against some arch-hydras and some drakes.

EDIT: I switched her name back to Gwen and coloration back to her old flesh-tone - the hulk gimmick was kinda dumb. She's back as a fighter, as well, so you should be able to pick her up in the same role whenever you like.

I actually remember using Auri before, and even though she was low level, I recall her doing well! I've rented a lot of Goon pawns of varied levels out, from parts of Gransys to even BBI to help get them some monster experience. Hopefully upon returning I can eventually nab those Hellfire Gauntlets to complete the look I'm going for(the Sinner's gauntlets are a good standby.) Then I'll need to do some swapping before purification so I can start working at that Oblivion set for my main.

I have to say I haven't played a non MMO this much for a very, very long time.

I did it as a warrior while on an escort right out of the gate, but I did have the crutch that I was using Gyoru's pawn, which was grossly outleveled and knew what was up. Get yourself a crutch! Ogre's are also most vulnerable on their heads, so if you go assassin, strider or ranger you can grab their faces and absolutely wreck their poo poo. I don't remember them ever being able to throw me once I was on their face.

Don't climb their backs though--they'll punish that.

This doesn't work, Mercedes doesn't teleport no matter how far I get from her. The griffon killed her even though it was by Gran Soren and I was passing the river on the way to Shadow Fort. I don't think that its possible for me to keep Mercedes alive here at all, I put myself in a corner. Thanks for the advice on other stuff though guys, I guess I'll go throw Mercedes in a ditch somewhere and start doing other stuff.

Can somebody clarify the save system? When I select 'RETRY' I'm usually kicked back to before the last few quests I did.

The character creation is horrible for an indecisive guy like me. I keep worrying I screwed up my Small lightweight angry dwarf PC and my massive mage pawn. And I coulda made them look cooler, like Wander from Shadow of the Colussus or something. Too many options!

Goon pawns I've been using a lot lately are Matresis, Husky and Bayolakes but the problem is, I keep fighting one boss monster after another and they keep getting killed, so not sure if you're actually gains rift crystals if you don't release rented pawns in the normal way.

So I've discovered you get an exp penalty for a high level pawn no matter how much higher it is. I thought if the pawn was within 20 levels you wouldn't get penalized, but I switched out a pawn 17 levels above me with one my level and got about 20% more exp(maybe it was 17% more?).

Ah, thanks, dude. Good to know the owners still got some benefits from my mooching. Goons' high-level pawns tends to have some sweet-looking armors and weapons that's much better than the ones I have right now so I'm not sure what kind of gifts I should be giving that's actually useful. Don't worry so much about escort quests. They're ONLY worth doing if you either a.) want to raise affinity with the character you'll be escorting, and/or b.) you want the items they're offering as a reward. They aren't even tied to any achievements other than the general "complete x number of notice board quests", which you can easily get without ever doing a single escort quest.
