The ice came off the river about two weeks ago here, and the waterfowl have been accumulating. I shot two rolls of film yesterday (one walking to, one walking from work), entirely of birds, but I don't know when I'll develop them. The flock of Western Grebes hanging out very close to the shore on the western side convinced me to come back with my DSLR and 500mm. They seemed completely unconcerned by my presence.

At least half of the flock (of about 40 individuals) was in this pose at any given time. Grebes can be a bit creepy when they want to.

Second one is a plain old female red-winged blackbird I believe.

That's a great background you got for the swallow, and beautiful colours overall. I might be tempted to remove the in-focus branches at the very bottom left of the picture if it were my shot.

I also went for a late afternoon prairie drive yesterday, and saw many first-of-season things, including Avocet and Killdeer (and Redwing Blackbirds and Yellowhead Blackbirds and other stuff) but I suspect my photos are not as good as yours - very nicely done!

70-200mm is too short for decent birding, and I unfortunately cannot justify anything longer at this time. Oh well.

You are off to a great start! Your last shot would look great (imo) if you cropped tighter on the pair, and doing a bit of post work in some of the other pictures to remove oof branches might be worth it depending on what you want to use the pictures for.

I think the blue looks fine, looks similar to the sky in Bartleby's ninja heron shot.

That's amazing. Shows you don't need a $4000 L series lens to get good shots.

Btw, notice the osprey holds the fish in a streamlined orientation for flight. Clever bird!

Thanks! That osprey mostly stayed pretty far away, without the magnification of the lens it was hard to tell that it was holding something - massively bright skies and a dark bird moving quickly at a distance makes for difficult viewing.

I'm running into the problem of where to spend my time & effort (and money) - on film (that's expired cheap stuff from eBay, less than half the cost per roll of something "good" like Portra), on a good scanner (my scanner cost $20 and was literally sitting in a recycle bin when I bought it, it maxes out at 1200dpi, 24 bit colour), on improving my scanning practices ( :effort: ), or on my editing practices (I always just do quick & easy edits in Lightroom). It seems like I'm able to get some opportunities for good shots, now I need to figure out how to take better advantage.

The 400mm on my Minolta is just so much fun to use. Most of that is nostalgia, but it's surprisingly easy to bring it to bear on fast and shy birdies.

This is not the best picture of a harrier, but it was taken while I was driving 45 km/h on a gravel road as my wife held the steering wheel trying to keep me out of the ditch. If that isn't a testament to the AF ability of the 1DX I don't know what is.

These are all great! It took me a while to figure out what the hell is going on with this guys legs though. I thought you had captured the magical levitating bird.

For some reason there is a colony of White-faced Ibises that decided Canada would make a great home, so I drove 1000 km over the past two days to try and capture some shots of them. They turned out to be a pain in the rear end since they almost always knew what direction they needed to be flying to make the light catch their feathers and then they'd make a point of flying the opposite way. Got a couple that show off the colours though:

Internet Junky, I gotta say you are consistently completely owning this thread. It's awesome. You're awesome. Please keep doing what you do.

I got pictures of some Willet porn (the males are absolutely hilarious when they're trying to convince a female), but it was just after sunset so who knows if they turned out. I should stop complaining about my backlog of bird photos and actually process them.

Every time I go out to shoot birds I come home and look up a species I've never even heard of before. Birds are great.
