rope kid posted:Melancholia is about how people who suffer from depression are constantly told by the people around them to just deal with it as though mental illness is something you can bootstrap your way out of. Everyone around Justine interacts with her as though their rational behavior will snap her out of depression. Later, when everyone around Justine is put in a position of intractable hopelessness, they are less capable of dealing with it than she is and, unsurprisingly, rationality does not help them. And the first step to dealing with depression could be reduced to "bootstrapping". Gods know how trying to "help" people can backfire horribly. Let's have a shining example of Icelandic humour, which hasn't gone down well here thus far but I'm hoping will grow on y'all. This is "Silvia Night", a character by invented by Ágústu Evu, her actress and some other dude. She was meant to be a character embodying all the negative sides of human behavior, a virtual embodiment of the extremely narcissistic and self-centered that was the rule in Icelandic society at the time. We decided to send her to Eurovision. And like Icelanders often do, she went a little bit too far. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVdf7KrevF0 cloudchamber posted:Melancholia is this century's version of La Regle de Jeu.

Obviously, I don't love that she has it, but I always appreciate seeing someone else voicing what it means to have it, since it means that I'm not alone. I feel like recognizing the illness and making it public is a big step for improvement. Here's "Adventures in Depression." Here's this from the CDC. I'm really curious as to how people can "bootstrap themselves" out of depression, though.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yb_cY1YLSF4 Speaking about Eurovision... We sent these guys there! (under a different gimmick, of course) Basically, Jel's a very dark communist comedian who decided to make a "wartime rock'n'roll" band featuring songs with lyrics such as "Hoo, hah, Warriors of the Hezbollah" and "Tiananmen, Tiananmen, kill another yellow man". *VERY* loving aggressive lyrics. Then a few years later he decided to make a band about two time travelers from the 1970s who did modern "intervention music".

A smug sociopath posted:Holy poo poo you're a terrible person. Thanks for posting this, I've been looking for it for a while after seeing it some thread a while back. Loving Life Partner posted:The Hyperbole And A Half writer posted a really amazing blog about depression, it's a pretty great read: And this is absolutely beautiful. Deceitful Penguin posted:Yeah, that was a bad way to say that, but thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt when I used vague language intentionally. Lets put it: Even with a lot of help from others the first step in trying to overcome depression is always wanting to try and change it, which comes from yourself. This is of course incredibly difficult, because the depression itself more often than not keeps you from doing that. I think you have to get help, but as it happens the ex disagreed. There were two depressed people watching that movie, but one decided to try and seek help while the other said she had to deal with it completely by herself. And when I tried to offer help she took it badly. Often wonder what I could have done better, but I´m guessing that trying to "help" her against her will was probably not a good idea! Yeah, depression really is something you can't understand until you go through it yourself, and its extremely hard to explain it to others who havent. I agree that the first steps are the hardest, though sometimes it is literally impossible to do anything, even things that are really important. Aaanyway, I don't wanna derail the thread, heres a piece of poo poo who is trying to rationalize Japan's use of so called "comfort women" during WWII! http://www.aljazeera.com/news/asia-pacific/2013/05/2013514103943104645.html

The Headline: The Quote: quote:"I don’t trust the Department of Justice on this," said Hewitt, referring to the subpoenas the Justice Department to obtain the Associated Press's phone records. "Do you, Congressman Nunes?" What Actually Happened: quote:I wanted to make a clarification for your article. What Rep. Nunes meant by “tapped” was that the DOJ seized the phone records, as has been widely reported. There was a little confusion between him and the host during the conversation: He did not mean to refer to phone records of the cloakroom itself, but of the Capitol. This refers to the phone records from the AP’s desk in the press gallery, which the DOJ admitted to looking at. He was explaining that if those phone records were seized, they would reveal a lot of conversations between the press and members of Congress, since reporters often speak to Members from the press gallery phones. The notion of the DOJ looking at phone records from the Capitol of conversations between Members of Congress and reporters is something that concerns Rep. Nunes, bringing up issues related to the separation of powers.

I recognize this is a very atypical experience and not possible in a lot of cases but I guess rationalizing my way out of depression is the only way I can describe it. I'd had it from around age 15 to 25 and one day I just stepped back and said "what the gently caress man no sane person would do what you've been doing to yourself, snap out of it." There's no magic bullet and gently caress anyone who makes a person with depression feel bad for not just "snapping out of it," but I'm also real uncomfortable with anyone who idealizes or revels in their depression or cutting or eating disorder or whatever. If you see it as an illness then the goal should be to recover.
