I don't think it was explicitly mentioned, but it's implied with how Ed and Isabel show up to Max's house in their jammies at the same time. Isabel wouldn't have gone out of her way to pick up Ed otherwise when responding to a distress call.

The character design seems to be strongly influenced by Earthbound, though, so I can understand people saying that.
