I loving suck at making bass lines. Like if I'm not using a real bassy kick like an 808 or just a sample with a ton of low end I'll try to sample an upright bass or something but it always sounds like poo poo. Then I try to write one in with a sub-bass soft synth and that sounds like poo poo. Rinse repeat. e: ^That's real nice.

I like how psychedelic it is, and I like those mid-range synth stabs that kind of sound like distorted 808 cowbells. The bassline isn't as bad as I was preparing for based on your previous post... maybe a little less release time on the sidechain compression would give it a little more definition

I still haven't worked out my aesthetic, just making beats... working on a couple different EPs right now with some rappers: https://soundcloud.com/seesub-1/call-me I feel like consciously aiming for a particular aesthetic is missing the point, or maybe not? Or I'm overthinking it, haha. I feel like the unique individual aesthetic can come from just creating enough poo poo and naturally developing.

That beat's really nice until :54 and that bass comes in and then it's un-listenable, I'm not being mean but it's hitting some weird frequency that sounds like a dog whistle or something. And yeah I've been making so much poo poo because I just graduated school and I don't start my real job until mid-june. Trying to grind out my Malcom Gladwell 10k hours. Also, drugs.

Hmm I'm not hearing it but I only have headphones to listen to it on at the moment. It's a high frequency you're hearing though? I can low pass it or EQ it... it's basically unmixed right now.

The one he's talking about sticks out, but not in a good way.

Basically what he said^. But more importantly if that didn't jump out at you immediately while you were making it I would switch up my headphones or find a set of speakers to test stuff out on.

Sometimes the way the song sounds in my DAW is drastically different than what I hear when I listen to the master in iTunes or whatever. A lot of times I have to export, listen to it, see what needs adjusting, then go back into Ableton and edit, re-export and check it. Rinse and repeat until the sound is tight enough or until I give up. Could be the issue here? I need some loving monitors.
|
# ? May 16, 2013 22:22 |
Might want to check the settings on Ableton's file export if that's the case, your .wav should sound exactly like your master channel in the program But also yes get monitors

I have nice expensive monitors and I still notice slight variances in the mix depending on what platform I'm listening to something on (iTunes, SoundCloud etc). Obviously uploading things to the web will affect the sound but I'm talking about loudness/fullness in relation to other elements. My finishing a song workflow looks something like this: listen on monitors -> listen on good headphones -> listen on poo poo headphones or speakers -> adjust -> render -> convert to 320kbs mp3 -> upload/share.

SHOPPA 4 LYFE posted:What would be difference in the export settings that would cause that discrepancy? "Normalize" would be the first thing to look at, but generally your track shouldn't sound any different after you export as opposed to playing it through in Ableton. If it sounds different on the same listening setup then it's almost certainly in your export settings.

Thoogsby posted:I stayed up for a long rear end time sampling death metal tunes This is pretty rad. I like your kick and snare a lot. So, my main music buddy met this rapper and recruited me to be half of the production team working with him. The rapper in question remarked that the two sounds that move him the most are bass guitar and electric organ, so I've been working on developing some stuff that features those sounds. This isn't a finished product but I'd like some feedback on the direction of the sound here: https://s3.amazonaws.com/lemondropkid/GeneSyS2_01.mp3 edit: after listening to it in a few different scenarios, some frequencies were bumming me out so I've re-EQ'd it, in case anyone had downloaded it. hey guys, i got like 32 bars of lyrics for a track that's just name-dropping poo poo about 1980's pro wrestlers (ala gza's "labels") im feeling uninspired though and i could really use a real aggressive grimy n' slumpy beat for it, around 84-90bpm. if anybody's got anything laying around they wanna donate, hit me up -- satellitehighthemc (at) gmail dot com i can't guarantee anything but i got a couple connections and can probably get written up at a few places around the web HIT ME UP WITH THAT poo poo Thoogsby posted:I stayed up for a long rear end time sampling death metal tunes i dunno about this one man, all of the components sound cool on their own but dont really mesh if ya feel me. like, the bells are dope as gently caress but they don't really sit well on top of that chopped guitar riff. i'd maybe tone it down a bit and try to make things sparses, esp. on the drums front

ps i know i just suggested sparseness right after posting a track with like sixteen tracks of percussion so im basically worthless

Hah, i get your point. When I'm working on something I never know if I should make it laid back enough for someone to spit over or keep it heavy on vocal drops and beat breaks/fills to keep people's attention.

Saw Death Grips and Killer Mike last night. It was cool, Death Grips were so loving noisy they had my bowels vibrating with their basses. OK, I wanted to ask you guys some advice on making snappy tight snares. I'm thinking about this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42GTZYaCz0A (Min 1:35, first beat that comes in). Any compression, EQing techniques, base samples to look for recommended?

You can recreate punch like that by taking a 707 tom and pitching it up to ~200kHz, also parallel compression all day.
