Do you have an obnoxious racist step-grandfather who comes to family events and passes out after one beer? That's who I always force my leftover poo poo beer on, he can't tell the difference. I mean otherwise I guess you could make some pizza dough or boil some brats.

That's what we do with bad beer here!

I'm going to Detroit in 3 weeks for a concert. I think I'm going to stay in Warren and hit up Kuhnhenn a bunch. Are Bell's and Founder's worth hitting up, or should I just hang out at Kuhnhenn for my two day visit? We get plenty of Bell's, Founder's, and Jolly Pumpkin in OH, so I'm mostly interested in stuff we don't get in my area. edit: Just kidding, Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids are way out of the way, I guess I might just be hanging out in Warren for two days! I don't mind driving within 45 minutes to an hour out of the way from the aquarium and will be coming in from the north. I plan to stop at State Line Liquors. I've also heard of DuClaw and that they make some good beer as does Stillwater, are any of them rather close?

Why haven't I been drinking Smuttynose IPA? Also tried the Maple Smoked Lager by Jack's Abby and Lawson's and found it to be decent but too sweet for my taste. If you enjoy sweet beer or maple, you will probably like it, however. I think maple belongs in a stout. Yet to try one though. Go to Brewer's Art or Alewife. DuClaw isn't really in the city proper. It's sort of like Iron Hill so there are a bunch of lcoations. The closest one on your trip is in Bel Air, just north of the city. Not sure if it would be worth the trip or not. Maybe if you're feeling adventurous and you've got time to kill. Stillwater is a gypsy brewer so there's no place to actually visit. State Line is literally 2 minutes off of 95 and is totally worth the trip. Bonus points if you take a back road and avoid the toll on 95, which conveniently takes you right past State Line. It's kind of weird if you've never done it before, but seriously gently caress that toll. They hit you both ways.

On the topic of macro beers, I had a couple bud lite limes left over from some people coming over this last weekend and I just took the beers into work and threw them in the fridge there. This way I won't waste precious calories on them but at the same time they won't go to waste. Obviously not everyone has that option (my work has a kegerator and a semi-stocked fridge), but I was surprised it took me an entire year for that option to occur to me.

Our concert is Monday night, so we'll probably spend a decent amount of time in Detroit to check things out. I really want to eat at Roast in Detroit, but if anyone has any other suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them. We're going to be staying at a B&B right down the road from Kuhnhenn, so that's probably going to be our evening hangout for Sunday & possibly Monday if we're back early enough. Any beers I should be on the lookout from them, other than Bourbon Barrel 4th Dementia, DRIPA, and Raspberry Eisbock?

So Untappd is really great for tasting notes, rating beers, meeting new people and discovering new brews. Are there any good apps for keeping track of what you have in your cellar- some sort of Beer Inventory?

Unless you're insistent on updating on the fly, a spreadsheet is a simple, easy tool. Last night, crazyfish and I attended Beer Temple's CCBW event where Tom Korder and John Laffler gave a talk about lambics, sours, and blending (while we drank 3F Golden Blend and JP's Oro de Calabaza). Then we did a blending experiment using Rodenbach Grand Cru, Rayon Vert, Virtue's Lapinette, NG's Raspberry Tart, and an acidic brew Laffler did for Off Color. Each table of 3 or 4 made a blend and got judged by the two guests and Chris of Beer Temple. We got second! Anyway, really awesome event that was very personal, very hands-on, very creative, and gave a good lesson on how hard blending is. They talked a lot about palate fatigue and, yeah, that's something that exists. Tasting every tiny variation of your blend starts to really screw with you. Really learned to respect people that do that for a living. danbanana fucked around with this message at 15:04 on May 22, 2013 |

Not sure how far along he is, but could tell us about it now I also know a lot of people using this: http://www.cellarhq.com/

I've heard a lot about https://www.alespace.com which should be coming out next month. It's more than a cellar app though, it facilitates trades from your cellar and you can create events to log your beers into and see what other people are bringing (great for bottle shares)

It's basically heaven for that subset of people who claim "science nerd" and "beer geek." I've gone both years now and it's pretty awesome. But this past year they had a station setup to talk about palate fatigue specifically. They did some neat experiments that simulated palate fatigue. By overexposing your sense of smell to a particular scent (in this case vanilla), and then sipping a beer brewed with vanilla, all of the mild vanilla notes went away in the drink, to the point where it was completely undetectable. They had a scientist on hand to talk about why this occurs in the brain and why it was desirable in terms of evolution. It was pretty fascinating stuff if you are a huge nerd.
