Well, I guess that makes a bit more sense. Though it still can't work as a "secret history," because we know that the only Saturn launch after Apollo 17 was Skylab, which obviously wasn't a secret moon mission.

Also, did the movie bother to provide a reason why the Soviets kept the fact that their space program had caught up with NASA a secret, even before things went bad?

True, but I was willing to buy the implausibility of a secret lunar mission because the whole "found footage" style just went so perfectly with the bleak, claustrophobic setting of the Moon.

No, it doesn't really explain anything going on on Earth. It does seem like the Soviet mission was a one-man job, though, so maybe they were waiting to announce it after it was sure to be a success.

Totally not true, but it's definitely my favorite conspiracy theory. Look up Lost Cosmonauts if you're interested in a flight of fancy, specifically the Judica-Cordiglia brothers.

There is a pretty good mockumentary about the Soviet moon landing in the 1930s - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_on_the_Moon. The scenes on the Moon in it are terrifying - they are not just usual found footage, it is 30s film camera effects that provide a very eerie effect.

2010: Odyssey Two is specifically the book where they land on Europa and get killed by some sort of plant monster from beneath the ice. I forget whether that happens in the movie.

E: point being, "alien monsters from beneath the ice" isn't totally inconsistent with "hard science fiction", if Arthur C. Clarke is anyone to go by.

That's actually 2061: Odyssey Three. Odyssey Two ends with the warning from David Bowman to attempt no landings on Europa :spergin:

In the 2010 novel, there's a subplot where China dispatches one of it's own ships to the Monolith, and their plan to beat the Leonov there is to do a maximum speed burn from Earth that leaves no fuel for a return trip. They land on Europa with the intention of refueling using the water there, but it's destroyed by some indigenous life form.

We're all going to experience changes in our life but only the best of us will qualify for front row seats.

I've been frequently going to the movie theater in the past two months and I'm really glad that you can actually see The Fast & Furious 6 now. I think there was a trailer for it before every single movie. It got old pretty drat quick.

However, I doubt I'll ever tire of the (third) trailer for Man of Steel. The music, the words, the whole drat thing... it gives me chills every single time. And I never even liked Superman (the other movies AND as a hero) all that much.

Speaking of Man of Steel, a somewhat shorter trailer was put up. There's a lot more emphasis on action in this one.

Everyone cries when they're stabbed. There's no shame in that.
Given the subject matter and my how hot/cold Sofia Coppola runs for me, I didn't expected to be looking forward to The Bling Ring. But the combination of Azealia Banks and Emma Watson's insane karma speech got me.

So do you guys remember seeing "Phantom Menace" when it opened? No... tried to block it out? Well, for me it seems once every few years I try to track this trailer that played before it down because it comes up in some conversation or another and lo and behold someone finally posted it. I can remember how intrigued everyone was when they first saw this, and how everything else that came after it just seemed to scream "Stay the gently caress away from this awful movie."
