I like how he says CDs and digital media are a con and then charges £2,495 for some records e: I dunno if you guys remember but a while back I posted about This Will Destroy You's Communal Blood single on pink vinyl. The turntable that I've been using for about six months has really started to fall apart. It's a Technics SL-220 and it has all sorts of problems: the hinges for the cover are broken, the arm is a little wonky and the speeds are somewhat off. I know that it'd be possible to clean some of the speed pots and possibly Macgyver the hinges into holding the cover but I'm questioning if it's really worth it. I can probably put aside between 100-200 bucks on a new TT, should I do that or take this one somewhere to get it fixed up? It cost me 30 initially plus another 45 for a headshell and cart but I'm not sure if it's worth the money I keep putting into it.

I've been holding off on getting a turntable for too long. I have a small collection of vinyl -- I used to take it to the library listen to, but it's been too long and the collection is growing too big to listen to that way. I don't need the absolute best/top of the line; but I'd like to know which brands to avoid. What kind of turntables should I be looking at?

I have been using an Audio-Technica LP120 for the past year and am loving it. I only wish it were automatic, but I'm usually near the turntable to lift the needle when the record ends so that's a pretty minor complaint. I ordered it from B&H Photo for a steal of a price; I think they were clearing them out. Anyway, the box it comes in is packed well so I wouldn't worry about ordering one online.

I was looking at the AT LP120 earlier. I assume it needs a pre-amp but I already have one so that's not a huge problem. I like that it plays 78s as well - I have some of my grandfather's that I'm not really concerned about damaging, they're already in pretty rough shape. What happens if you don't lift the needle when the record ends? Does the needle drag over the label?

I bought mine around a year and a half ago when Amazon was having a big vinyl sale. Add in Prime shipping from the free student trial, and it was practically a no-brainer. I was very surprised with how solid it is. I was expecting a faux metal body or some other cost-reducing shortcuts for that price, but it's very well-built.

Yeah, supposedly it's a different cart now. Can't remember the number offhand, but the tracking force for the one that came with my LP120 is 1.5 grams - 2.5 grams, and I find 2.0 to be perfect. I have heard good things about the Ortofon 2M Red and ordered one last week to try it out. Although, I think I need a protractor or GeoDisc thing to alight the needle? I've never mounted to a 1/2" headshell before. And, as CPL593H stated, the LP120 does have a preamp. There is a switch on the back which allows you to turn it off and use your own if you're so inclined.

In the least offensive way possible, I think a cart like the 2M might be getting towards the limitations of the 120's arm. It's now shipping with the AT-95E, which is like AudioTechnica's prime "intermediate" cart (~$50 new). The 95E is probably the best cartridge for that table and I don't think it would ever really be worth upgrading it from there. To echo Ron Burgundy's post, arguably the next logical step up would be somewhere like the Ortofon 2M series (the oft-mentioned Red/Blue/etc.), and then you start hitting the table's limitations and the modest gains don't really make the financial cost worth it. I don't mean that as a dig against the LP120 either- honestly, that table + the 95E are probably more than adequate for most people. As someone who can't tell the sound quality of two tables apart once you get past the $300 mark, the only thing that really has me considering a Debut Carbon over the LP120 for my living room is that I think the Carbon looks cooler. Needledoctor sells a complete LP120/A2 set for $500, but they don't let you choose the color of your speakers and they basically charge you $300 for the table (which is what they charge for it alone). Given that it's $80 cheaper on Amazon, you're way better off just buying the table there and ordering whatever color of speakers you want from Audioengine directly.

So I just bought Suicide - Suicide (limited edition) with a Cheree remix on side A and Frankie Teardrop , Che, and Keep Your Dreams on side B (that last one was weird to see, as was the remix). If anyone else has this copy of this Suicide record, are you experiencing problems playing Ghost Rider? On my copy, Ghost Rider (first track) keeps on skipping and then playing the same loops as if it's stuck in the groove, but every other track plays perfectly. What's the dealio? Is this a bad record, or is it just my record? Nothing is warped or scratched or smudged.

As much as I hate to admit it, few things bring me more pleasure than a shiny new commodity--especially when said commodity relates to stereo/vinyl. It's fun to wake up in the morning after you get it, walk into the room it's in, and think, "Oh yeah, that's right, I almost forgot that I have this thing now. gently caress yeah. Let's watch it light up and spin!" I don't have too many autographed records, but this one is probably my favorite. I didn't get it autographed personally, though. It was just a very lucky eBay BIN.

Dude is totally legit and just hung out and signed poo poo for fans for a few hours after the show.

I know the LP-60 isn't the best phono, but it was what I could afford at the time. Am I sandpapering my vinyl every time I use it or is it really not that bad? Sucks that I can't change the cartridge or adjust the tracking force, but... yeah.

As someone who grew up in a PAL country  where all our movies are 4% fast, sometimes I need to crank up the speed a little because hearing movie songs 4% slow sounds strange to me. Even though they are only like half a semitone pitch difference, and by no means do I have perfect pitch.

I live in Colorado and it's dry as poo poo here, which equals static electricity on everything all the time. Which means it's insanely hard to keep static from building up while I'm playing records. So a couple of things... Right now, if little specks of dust or cat hair get on the record, I use a brush like this one to try and remove it, but all it seems to do is push the dust around, and doesn't actually pick anything up. What's a better option? Even the records that I keep in anti-static sleeves seem to end up getting all clingy after a while. Second thing is, what are y'all using for your slip mats? I have a straight up black felt one that I've had since I got my TT, and half the time, the drat thing sticks to the record when I take it off the spindle. Should I go for a rubber one, or is there an anti-static solution that would work? Help me defeat my static woes!

I use some sort of rubber/bendy plastic slip-mat that came with mine. Felt sounds awful for preventing static.

As someone who lives in an excessively dry area, I feel your pain. For a brush, I would suggest the Audio-Technica 6012 Record Care Kit, but it looks like it's been discontinued. I haven't had any issues with it, it's been able to clean some pretty gnarly records with little trouble. If you can find it at a brick-and-mortar store, though, I highly recommend it. This looks like a decent alternative. It's the same brush surface with a different body, and I believe the cleaning solution is very close to, if not the same as, the AT solution.
