So since this thread inspired me to do some long exposure shots I might as well post them. I'm kinda happy with how some of these turned out, but looking at everyone's pics in this thread I can see that there's a lot of room for improvement. I wasn't really sure how to process these in Photoshop either, I just played with brightness, contrast and sharpness a bit and I guess they came out pretty grainy.

I call out to the beasts of the sea! To come forth and join us! This night is yours!

This is wonderful, I love it. I really wish I was a little older when living in Louisiana so I could have taken something like this.

Content:

Fireworks are hard to photograph. My exif data says the exposure was "6" but I can't recall using such a long exposure toward the end of the display. It would have been closer to either two or four seconds. Also my 5D was acting really strange that night. I guess I have to read the manual and stop assuming it's like my 50D...

Okay, so I'm entirely new to this whole long exposure thing. I feel that all of these could be better in some way, but am not sure how. Also learning how to play around with Lightroom, hence the blueishness to the skyline shot. Any tips would be neat.

Reminds me of 80s movies where the town gets invaded by ghosts or an evil presence or whatever. Auroras are cool.

I love this shot.

Long exposure at night is an area of photography I haven't spent much time really trying, I live in a small town and lights are quite hard to find at night.

The only time there's been even anything remotely worth shooting in my immediate vicinity at night, was during a rare thunderstorm.

Orange lights are the best. That means sodium vapour lamps.

They emit discrete wavelengths of light so they’re easy to filter out. Astophotographers do it all the time.

Real light pollution filters are pretty expensive, but didymium “red enhancing” filters are more affordable work quite decently. They won’t completely block out the light, but they’ll make it a lot less obnoxious.

Yeah, getting a filter of some sort has been on my to do list, not necessarily for lightning shots but for astrophotography.

This, I like this.
I feel inspired.
I think I might head out to the shore today and try out the variable ND filter I got months ago.

Can anybody please recommend me a piece if equipment to block out the viewfinder on my canon 5dmkii to avoid light leaks when i do long exposures during the day? So far ive been either sticky taping a piece of drivers license or stuffing a bit of paper in the eyepiece but it isnt that great as i switch between long exposure and normal quite a bit and would like something that is made specifically for this purpose

Cheers

There should be a little cover that came with it, on the strap. See at the bottom of this http://www.canon.co.uk/Support/Consumer_Products/products/cameras/Digital_SLR/EOS_5D_Mark_II.aspx?faqtcmuri=tcm:14-1040571&page=1&type=faq

If you don't have the original strap just get one from ebay for cheap http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canon-Genuine-EOS-5D-Mark-II-Camera-Strap-for-DSLRs-/290915675758?pt=US_Camera_Straps_Hand_Grips&hash=item43bbecee6e
